The contemporary, extremely dynamic world is characterized by an enormous number of di-verse organizations created by people to satisfy their collective and individual needs. Although the dominant role is played by business organizations, focused mainly on satisfying individual needs, public organizations have a special significance for humanity. They are the bones of the organizational structure of states, they ensure the conditions for the functioning of societies and are aimed at satisfying their collective needs. The activities of these organizations are mainly financed from public funds and determine the standard of living and development of societies. However, more and more public funds allocated for this purpose remain also in the interest of business organizations. The access of these organizations to public funds depends to a large extent on the type of services offered and on social policy and the model of meeting the collective social needs adopted by the state authorities. Currently, the network model of satisfying public needs is preferred; it stresses the role both public and business organizations. Such a solution usually has advantages and disadvantages. It should be preceded by detailed analyzes and must take into account economic and social conditions in the country. In practice, it should be clearly stated to which system the satisfaction of social needs we are going and what decides for choosing of such a system. The way of managing this process should also be clearly defined.

Renzo Piano is of the opinion that the era of the sprawling urban peripheries is over. The vast flat areas of terraced houses stretching expansively the urban tissue and the technical infrastructure are too costly and crippling to the economy and the whole system has to pass into history. It is only the dense high-rise buildings – vertical cities making use of the so called brownfields that is the urban un-built up areas, that may satisfy the need for the construction boom that has the character of an "implosion" that is a centripetal development of cities. Thus, one observes a trend to eradicate suburban, satellite and even rural architecture in favor of intensive urban housing and the possibly uncontaminated nature around. Therefore where is the place for the atavistic human need for "rural peace" – for living among the trees and for permanent contact with nature and the fear of heights; and finally what about the love of the safe scale of "small cities" which is in accord with the tendency of the "citta slow" movement. Yet on the other hand, one notices an ever greater lack of adjustment of the contemporary population to being able to survive on one’s own and confront unbounded nature. "Nature" has acquired the dimension of a sports achievement, an act of heroism and a lethal challenge.

The processes connected with education and research works have become more complex. The advancement of engineering and information technologies has influenced the modes of teaching and learning and modernized the supporting and aiding tools. Nowadays, science is interdisciplinary, which results in new relations and interactions in the space of buildings. The above mentioned assumptions require new perspective and a fresh approach to planning changes in higher education buildings and revitalization of student campuses.

Ewolucja techniczna, zmiany organizacyjne i programowe studiów a także przemiany społeczne sprawiają, że przestrzeń i wyposażenie obiektów wyższych uczelni ulegają stopniowym zmianom w budynkach starszych a w obiektach nowych, w ciągu ostatnich lat, możemy zaobserwować rozwiązania projektowe, które wyznaczają nowe standardy techniczne i funkcjonalne. Procesy związane z dydaktyką i pracami badawczymi, stały się coraz bardziej złożone. Wraz z rozwojem techniki i informacji obserwujemy zmiany w sposobach prowadzenia zajęć dydaktycznych, ocen i prezentacji prac studenckich. Studenci poszukują większej współpracy i doświadczeń. Nauka wymaga obecnie interdyscyplinarnych badań naukowych. Potrzeba ta wymusza nowe relacje i interakcje w przestrzeni budynków.
