Currently the research on silver nanoparticles is of great demand owing to their antibacterial properties. One of the possibilities is the study of the silver deposition on the cellulose fibers, and more specifically of the silver nanoparticles and cellulose particles. The research was aimed at obtaining silver nanostructures by reducing ions with formaldehyde and then stabilizing them with the Pluronic solution. A suspension system containing cellulose fibers and silver nanoparticles was prepared in the basic electrolyte NaNO3. There were analyzed the following makes: pH of solutions, grain distribution and zeta potential ζ. Ag nanoparticles are largely applied in medicine, pharmacy, cosmetology and textile industry. Great interest in the nanostructures allows for developing knowledge about them, and thus creating the possibility of further improvement of their properties for subsequent applications.

A high rate of silver nanoparticle formation, effective against the Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacterium, was obtained for the first time by means of a simple, eco-friendly, and low-cost green method in a solution of agave inulin. The study was carried out using the traditional method, in which the effects of the concentration of agave inulin, AgNO3, temperature, and pH on the synthesis were analyzed by UV-Vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Most of the nanoparticles produced were spherical with a size less than 10 nm. In a sample with 20 mg/mL of agave inulin, 1 mM of AgNO3, T = 23°C, and pH = 12, the highest percentage of Ag+ ions available in the solution were reduced for the formation of nanoparticles in less than 40 min, whereas a sample prepared with 60 mg/mL of agave inulin, 10 mM of AgNO3, T = 23°C, pH = 12, and a storage time of 40 min showed a significant bactericidal effect on the E. coli strain. Agave inulin is a good biological compound for the formation of small, spherical silver nanoparticles. A pH of 12 favors a higher production speed of the silver nanoparticles and better use of the available Ag+ ions. In addition to this, the concentration of AgNO3 is a determining factor for increased formation of the nanoparticles necessary to bactericidal effect.

The plant mediated biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles is of magnificent concern due to its eco-benign and single pot nature. Here, Cinnamomum tamala (C. tamala) aqueous leaf extract was utilised for the silver nanoparticles’ (Ag NPs) synthesis. The phytoconstituents in the leaf extract were analysed by standard methods. These metabolites, especially carbohydrate polymers reduce Ag ions to Ag NPs accompanied by a reddish-brown coloration of the reaction mixture. The visual observation of intense brown colour is the first indication of the formation of Ag NPs. Various spectro-analytical techniques further characterise the Ag NPs. The green synthesised spherical Ag NPs were crystalline with an average size of 38 nm. The Ag NPs were scrutinised for antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity and obtained good results. The free radical scavenging was studied by 2, 2-Diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The antibacterial activity of Ag NPs was assessed against human pathogens, and it shown to have good antibacterial potency against a wide spectrum of bacteria. The cytotoxic activity against HEK-293T (human embryonic kidney) cell line was evaluated by 2,3-bis-(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide (XTT) assay. These potent biological activities enable C. tamala capped Ag NPs to be suitable candidates for the future applications in various fields, predominantly clinical and biomedical.

Polymer nanocomposites based on segmented polyurethane and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized using different methods of nanoparticle introduction. The dependence of their structure, thermophysical and antimicrobial properties on the method of introducing AgNPs was studied. It was established that the method of introduction affects both the spatial distribution of the filler particles and the final properties of the material. The introduction of AgNPs by the ultrasonic dispersion method leads to inhibition of the growth of the crystalline phase, which is associated with the formation of aggregates from AgNPs of small size, which have a large polymer-filler interaction surface. It is shown that the introducing AgNPs from a colloidal solution leads to an increase in the degree of crystallinity of the polymer matrix, which is a consequence of the nucleation effect of nanosized silver particles on the formation of the crystalline phase. It was established that the method of introducing nanoparticles does not affect their final antimicrobial properties. Owing to their unique characteristics, synthesized nanocomposite films can be promising for use as antimicrobial coatings.
The influence of co-solvents such as: dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), isopropyl alcohol (IPA), ethylene glycol (EG), ethanol (EtOH) and deionized water (DI) on the properties of ink based on poly(3,4--ethylene dioxythiophene), poly(sulfonostyrene) and silver nanoparticles (PEDOT/PSS/SNP) blends was investigated. The ink was obtained by the ultrasonic dispersion method by mixing PEDOT, PSS and SNP and then adding co-solvents. The ink was applied to the cotton fabric by printing method. The structure, electrical and functional properties of fabrics were investigated. The increase in electrical conductivity was found as a result of the phase separation between PEDOT and PSS due to the use of co-solvents. SEM micrographs showed good adhesion of the ink to the cotton fiber, which was confirmed by the FTIR method. The developed ink has great application potential, especially in electronic devices for biomedical purposes.

One of the most important roles for nanotechnology concerns is the development of optimizable experimental protocols for nanomaterials synthesis. The formation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was supported by Rhizopus stolonifer MR11, which was isolated from olive oil mill soil samples. The ability of R. stolonifer MR11 to biosynthesize silver nanoparticles in response to various components of different culture media was tested. Furthermore, the conditions under which the reducing biomass filtrate was obtained, as well as the conditions of the bio-reduction reaction of AgNO3 into AgNPs, were investigated. The fungal biomass filtrate of the strain Rhizopus stolonifer MR11 was capable of converting silver nitrate into AgNPs, as evidenced by the color change of the fungal filtrates. UV-Vis spectrophotometer, TEM, Zeta potential, Zeta sizer, FT-IR, and XRD analyses were used to characterize the AgNPs. TEM analysis revealed that the silver nanoparticles were 1–35 nm in size. R. stolonifer MR11 produced the maximum AgNPs when grown for 18 hours at 36 °C in media with starch and yeast extract as the sole carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. The reducing biomass filtrate was obtained by incubating 5 g mycelial biomass in deionized water with a pH of 6 for 48 hours at 30 °C. The optimal reduction conditions of the biosynthesis reaction were determined by adding 1.0 mM AgNO3 to a pH 5 buffered mycelial filtrate and incubating it for 72 hours at 33 °C. The current study’s findings highlighted the importance of process parameters at each stage for optimal AgNPs biosynthesis.
Prolonged exposure to UV radiation, and ever-increasing life expectancy, mean that an increasing proportion of the population suffers from clouding of the intraocular lens. Nowadays, the performance of intraocular implantation procedures is commonplace. Unfortunately, with the increasing number of operations, the number of postoperative complications is also increasing. One way to avoid complications may be to use an intraocular implant that has been immersed in a solution containing silver nanoparticles. As part of the study, four selected intraocular implants – that are available on the ophthalmic market – were tested. In order to investigate the effect of silver particles on the optical properties of the implants, tests were carried out using a UV-VIS spectrophotometer. Two series of implants were tested: before and after immersion in a silver solution. The implants were immersed for a period of 7 days. It was found that the presence of silver particles does not have a negative impact on the translucency of the implants.
The article discusses the results of biocide tests for application in the oil and gas industry. This research was carried out with the use of active agents, such as: nano-silver particle suspension, and the solutions of two antimicrobial substances. The second part of the laboratory study was testing H2S scavengers. Preparations recommended for drilling fluid technology and underground gas storage facilities were used. It should be noted that biogenic processes can largely cause the phenomenon of degradation of drilling fluids. As a result of these processes, drilling mud gets contaminated and loses its technological and rheological properties, making it incapable of fulfilling its role during drilling operations. All the tested scavengers were triazine products. In general, this agent in a solution acts in two ways. The application of triazine derivatives (three isomeric forms) is a good means of eliminating microorganisms from drilling fluid or formation water. These active agents have strong antimicrobial properties. On the other hand, these substances can also neutralise the hydrogen sulphide. The research enaNafta-Gabled determination of the effectiveness of the antimicrobial activity of the following substances: nano-silver particles, nano-Ag in combination with oxazolidine, and nano-Ag with a combination with glyoxal. The results of laboratory tests also allowed for a comparison of the efficiency of the action of individual H2S scavengers. The first two tests were conducted in the range of nano-silver particles concentrations from 0.05 to 0.6% vol., while the next tests (i.e. with the application of nano-Ag/biocide) were carried out in the concentration range from 0.02 to 0.5% vol. Bacterial or fungal colony units (CFU) were used as a reference method for assessing the microbial water quality. The formation water came from a facility of underground gas storage (collective water – i.e. water from separators). In parallel tests, the number of bacteria was also determined in the contaminated water-based polymer drilling mud. The number of microorganisms in the tested samples was compared with the CFUs in control samples without biocide. The described research is part of a complex study intended to conduct biomonitoring of deposit environments and to eliminate bacterial contamination and sulphating of hydrocarbons, especially in stored natural gas. Industrial operations in this field make it possible to maintain the correct quality of stored gas and contribute to the improvement of exploitation. Selected effective substances will be used in the future in industry to reduce the content of biogenic hydrogen sulphide and to decrease a number of harmful microorganisms in drilling muds and formation waters.

W artykule omówiono wyniki testów skuteczności działania biocydów dla potrzeb przemysłu naftowego i gazowniczego. Badania zostały przeprowadzone z zastosowaniem zawiesiny cząstek nanosrebra oraz roztworów dwóch produktów biobójczych. Druga część pracy dotyczyła testów skuteczności działania pochłaniaczy siarkowodoru wytworzonych na bazie triazyny. Użyto preparatów rekomendowanych do zastosowania zarówno w technologii płynów wiertniczych, jak i w obiektach podziemnego magazynowania gazu (PMG). Pochodne triazyny (trzy formy izomeryczne) stosowane w przemyśle mają silne własności bakteriobiobójcze w odniesieniu do skażonych płuczek wiertniczych i wód złożowych. Wytypowane skuteczne preparaty chemiczne zostaną w przyszłości wykorzystane w przemyśle do zmniejszenia zawartości biogennego siarkowodoru oraz redukcji liczby niekorzystnych mikroorganizmów w środowisku płuczek wiertniczych i wód złożowych.

Autorzy zastosowali metody chemiczną i fizykochemiczną do otrzymywania nanocząstek srebra o określonej morfologii, a następnie przeprowadzili wytopy szkieł i przeprowadzili ich krystalizację. Syntetyzowane nanocząstki scharakteryzowano technikami spektrofotometrii UV-VIS i skaningowej mikroskopii elektronowej SEM.

The authors used chemical and physicochemical methods to obtain silver nanoparticles of defined morphology, and then carried out glass melting and crystallization. After crystallization, the glasses were subjected to UV-VIS spectrophotometric tests to determine the effect of the shape and size of the nanoparticles on the colour of the glasses and the quantitative EDS analysis to determine the elemental composition of the obtained glass. The synthesis of silver nanoparticles was carried out using two ways: by electrochemical method and by chemical reduction in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide CTab. The electrochemical method made it possible to obtain round nanoparticles of various sizes. The chemical method made allowed for obtaining elongated particles with a variable ratio of diameter to length of nanoparticles. The less silver nanoparticles added, the more intensely the glass absorbs the light wave, resulting in an intense red colour. On the other hand, as the content of silver nanoparticles in glass increases, the glass absorbs the light wave to a lesser extent; as a result, the colour is less intense (pink). However, it is not the percentage of silver in the glass that determines its colour, but the shape, distribution and size of silver nanoparticles that are crucial for obtaining the desired colour of the glass. The intensity and colour tint of the tested glasses depended on the conditions of the crystallization process. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by UV-VIS spectrophotometry and SEM scanning electron microscopy.

The multifaceted field of conductive inks is moving from a preliminary to an advanced stage. In this study, cellulose filter paper was used as a popular, renewable, and inexpensive material, with very interesting flexible characteristics. The novelty of this work was to use a single-walled carbon nanotube/silver (SWCNT/Ag) nanopowder in a color polymeric matrix for preparing highly conductive color inks resistant to washing. An investigation comparing three inks colored separately with different anionic and cationic dyes was performed to examine possible changes in electrical resistivity of the papers. The results obtained from FT-IR spectroscopy showed the presence of carboxylic groups in acid-treated SWCNTs and revealed Ag-containing bonds. XRD results confirmed functionalization of SWCNTs and obtaining SWCNT/Ag powder with Ag nanoparticles (NPs). Thermal stability and degradation of specimens were studied using TGA analysis to measure the percentage of Ag NPs in the SWCNTs network. The TEM micrographs were consistent with the Scherrer results. Finally, different color inks were synthesized with/without SWCNT/Ag nanopowder, and the four-point probe technique was utilized to measure the electrical resistivity of each colored paper. Consequently, preparation of color conductive inks by using ultra-narrow SWCNTs was done successfully.
During the implantation surgery, an infection associated with the biofilm formation may occur. Both the type of the introduced material as well as the implant osseointegration largely determine the effectiveness of bone defect treatment. The materials research is increasingly focusing on improving the osseointegration process. A bacterial biofilm can form on any surface of the artificial organ that has been introduced into the body or surrounding tissues. A bacterial infection is one of the most serious complications of implantology surgery leading to serious physiological damage. As proved in the literature, a solution that can prevent bacterial infections is to modify the implant surface by applying an antibacterial coating, while maintaining the material biocompatibility. The article presents the tests results of prototype implants with hydroxyapatite coatings obtained via plasma spraying on titanium surfaces. The resulting coatings were enriched with silver nanoparticles, the content of which was about 2%. The animal model are New Zealand rabbits. The implants were placed in the femur of the animal. The amount of released ions and the force of pulling the implants from the bone were determined. The binding strength between the joint surface and the implant was determined by the mechanical blocking and biological binding of growing bone tissue. In addition, the surface structure of the obtained implants was evaluated. It has been shown that the surface modification of the implants affected the obtained stabilization value, as compared to the implants surface coated only with hydroxyapatite.

In this article, we report the synthesis and characterization of silver dispersed poly(m-toluidine-co-2-bromoaniline) copolymer synthesized by chemical oxidative polymerization method. The synthesized copolymer composites were subjected to different analytical characterization methods, such as FT-IR, UV, XRD, SEM, photoluminescence and electrical conductivity studies. All the polymer samples are found to be soluble in common organic solvents. UV absorption spectra show a red shift when silver nanoparticles are dispersed in the copolymer. The characteristic peaks observed in FT-IR spectra confirm the formation of the copolymer. XRD pattern reveals the crystalline nature of the copolymer composites and sharp peaks in the spectra confirm the presence of silver particles. The silver nanoparticles change the surface morphology in the form of perfect encapsulation. The electrical conductivity of the polymer composites is found to vary from 10-4 S/cm to 10-6 S/cm. PL study reveals the charge transfer between the copolymer and the silver particles.

Due to their potential application in various fields of science and technology, the eco-friendly bio-synthesis of silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) is a growing area for researchers. In this study, we report the green synthesis of Ag nanoparticles and their characterization by using various techniques. For the preparation of Ag particles, aqueous plant extract of ailanthus altissima was used as a reducing medium for Ag+ ions of silver nitrate to Ag0. UV-Vis spectrophotometry was used to trace the formation of Ag particles by noting their surface plasmon resonance peaks (400 nm to 440 nm). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was employed to reveal the chemical composition of Ag nanoparticles which were capped by plant extract. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to get the lattice image, morphology and average size of Ag particles. The average size distribution of Ag NPs dispersed in aqueous media was also measured using dynamic light scattering (DLS). It was found that DLS results are in good agreement with those obtained from SEM. The synthesized particles were then subjected to the antibacterial and antifungal activities by studying them against various species, such as bacillus cereus, staphylococcus aureus, pseudomonas aeruginosa, E. coli and A. parasiticus, A. niger and A. flavus fungi. It was noted from the growth curves of both bacteria and fungi that in the presence of silver nanoparticles they show more in-zone growth as compared to the plant extract.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the bactericidal properties of silver nanoparticles against bacteria Escherichia coli. In addition, a sensitivity analysis was made of E. coli to commonly used antibiotics. In the study were used 51 strains isolated from municipal waste. Applied growing concentrations of nanosilver were used: 5, 10, 15, 30, 60 and 125 ppm. The positive control was an antibiotic - ampicillin, negative control - a distilled water. Drug-resistance analysis was performed by disc-diffusion method. Along with the increase in the concentration of silver nanoparticles their antibacterial properties is also growing. The smallest concentration that inhibited growth of some isolates was 5 ppm, while the most effective concentration was 125 ppm. Analysis of drug resistance showed that the antibiotic inhibits growth of a large number of E. coli strains was amikacin. In addition, 22% of all isolates analyzed were drug-resistant. Nanosilver has a high bactericidal potential and may be helpful in solving the problem of drug resistance. However, it is reasonable to conduct further studies on the effects of toxicity of nanoparticles on the environment and higher organisms.
The aim of this study was to investigate the surface properties of polymeric composites and the osteoblastic cell behaviour set in direct contact with the biomaterials tested. The surface properties were evaluated before and after 6-month incubation in an in vitro environment. The composite materials were prepared by means of extrusion and injection moulding. Three commercially available thermoplastic polymers (ABS (poly)acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) were used as composite matrices. Antibacterial silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were added as a modifying phase. Surface properties of the materials tested, such as: wettability, roughness and microstructure, were determined. Furthermore the morphology of Saos-2 human osteoblastic cells in direct contact with the composite materials was assessed after the 7-day culture. The addition of silver nanoparticles caused minor changes in the wettability and roughness values. As light modification, the silver nanoparticles influenced the microstructure. The osteoblasts displayed the proper morphology and they evenly settled on the surface of the pure polymer and composite materials, which indicated the material cytocompatibility.
