Heavy metals are major stressors for benthic macroalgal communities in marine ecosystems. In this study, the effects of copper and cadmium on some physiological parameters along with antifouling defense of the marine macroalga Ulva reticulata were assessed under laboratory conditions. Macroalgal samples were treated with three concentrations (1 mg l−1, 3 mg l−1 and 5 mg l−1) of copper and cadmium for 2 and 7 days. After treatment, algal samples were analyzed for chlorophyll-a, carotenoid, total polyphenol and total antioxidant capacity. Also, algal extracts were tested against biofilm-forming bacteria strains to understand differences in antifouling activity. The results indicated that exposure of U. reticulata to copper and cadmium, on the one hand, induced protective mechanisms such as total phenol production and antioxidant capacity against metal stress and, on the other hand, reduced photosynthesis. While the extract obtained from control algal samples showed a strong inhibitory effect on the growth of biofilm-forming bacteria, treatment with heavy metals resulted in reduced antibiofilm activity. In general, the results revealed that exposure of macroalgae to heavy metals can affect antifouling defense traits in addition to changes in photosynthetic pigment content.

W artykule przedstawiono informacje dotyczące potencjalnego ryzyka dla zdrowia związanego ze spożyciem wodorostów morskich z uwzględnieniem stwierdzanego poziomu zanieczyszczenia pierwiastkami szkodliwymi dla zdrowia. Oceny dokonano na podstawie wyników badań własnych oraz danych zgromadzone przez państwa członkowskie UE. Omówiono aktualny stan prawny w tym obszarze oraz działania podjęte przez Komisję Europejską zmierzające do właściwego zarządzania ryzykiem. Zwrócono również uwagę na powiadomienia zgłaszane w ramach systemu Wczesnego Ostrzegania o Niebezpiecznej Żywności i Paszach (RASFF), dotyczące stwierdzenia istotnego zagrożenia dla zdrowia związanego z wysoką zawartością metali ciężkich w wodorostach morskich i suplementach diety je zawierających.

The article presents information on the potential health risk related to the consumption of seaweed, taking into account the level of contamination with elements harmful to human health. The assessment was performed on the basis of own results as well as the results collected by the European Union Member States. The current legal status in this area as well as the actions undertaken by the European Commission aimed to proper risk management were also discussed. Attention was also paid to notifications reported under the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) regarding a significant health risk related to the high content of heavy metals in seaweed and food supplements containing them.

Using the total lipid contents and fatty acid profiles, the marine macro-algae Jania rubens (Rhodophyceae), Ulva linza (Chlorophyceae) and Padina pavonica (Phaeophyceae) were evaluated for biodiesel production during the spring, summer and autumn. Seawater parameters such as pH, salinity and temperature were measured. The total lipid content varied from 1.56% (J. rubens) to 4.14% (U. linza) of dry weight, with the highest values occurring in spring. The fatty acid methyl ester profiles were analysed using gas chromatography. The highest percentage of total fatty acids was recorded in P. pavonica, with 6.2% in autumn, whereas the lowest was in J. rubens, with 68.6% in summer. The relative amount of saturated to unsaturated fatty acids was significantly higher in P. pavonica than in the other macro-algae. Seasonal variations in pH, salinity and temperature had no significant effect on the total lipid and fatty acid contents. Principal component analysis grouped brown and green algae together, whereas red alga grouped out. Furthermore, methyl ester profiles indicate that brown and green seaweeds are preferred, followed by red seaweeds, which appears to have little potential for oil-based products. Therefore, these seaweeds are not targets for biodiesel production.

W latach 2006-2007 przeprowadzono doświadczenia polowe nad wpływem środków AlgaminoPlant i HumiPlant na marchew. Porównywano dwa systemy stosowania badanych środków. W pierwszym HumiPlant użyto bezpośrednio po siewie w dawce 30 L. ha-1 i po wschodach, w fazie 1-2 liści marchwi (0,5 L.ha-1), a następnie w odstępach co 7-14 dni wykonano cztery zabiegi AlgaminoPlantem (1 L. ha-1w każdym zabiegu). W drugim systemie stosowano po wschodach tylko AlgaminoPlant (1 L.ha-1 w czterech zabiegach). Stosowane biostymulatory korzystnie wpływały na plon i skład chemiczny korzeni marchwi. Zaznaczyła się tendencja zmniejszenia zawartości azotanów i wzrosła zawartość karotenoidów. Moczenie nasion w 2% roztworze AlgaminoPlantu przyspieszało i poprawiało zdolność kiełkowania nasion marchwi i pietruszki.

The aim of the 2 years (2006-2007) experiments carried out with carrots was to determine the influence of biostimulators from seaweed (AlgaminoPlant) and leonardite (HumiPlant) on growth and yield of the crops. Two systems of application were compared. In the first HumiPlant (30 Lźha-1) was used directly after sowing and 0,5 Lźha-1at 1-2 leaves stage of carrots, afterwards AlgaminoPlant was applied four times (1 Lźha-1) in 7-14 days intervals. In the second system AlgaminoPlant was applied four times at the rate of 1 Lźha-1 for each treatment. Tendency of the yield increasing and positive changes in chemical composition after both treatments were observed. The content of nitrates was decreased and carotenoids were slightly increased. Soaking carrot and parsley seeds in 2% AlgaminoPlant water solution accelerated germination and improved germinability of seeds.
