One of the most common problems for river engineers is the accumulation of waterborne debris upstream of the bridge piers. In addition to reducing the cross-sectional flow area, debris increases the drag force exerted to the pier and contributes to scour. Several studies have been carried out by previous researchers to examine the usefulness of different types of countermeasures. The effectiveness of these countermeasures is not well understood when debris accumulation occurs. In this study, the effect of debris accumulation on the efficiency of a bridge pier slot, as scour countermeasure, is investigated experimentally. A total of 54 experiments were carried out under different hydraulic and debris geometrical conditions. The results showed that slots were effective in protecting bridge piers against scouring in presence of debris. Depending on the debris shape, the reduction efficiency may increase or decrease for a slotted pier in presence of debris accumulation when compared to the standard pier conditions without debris accumulation. Except for the inverse pyramid shape, the maximum scour is generally more reduced due to sheltering effect when the debris is located on the bed. While debris accumulation can lead to a reduction of the slot efficiency, the slot can be considered a reliable countermeasure against scouring. The outcome of this study can help the design of new bridges affected by large wood debris accumulations.

Scour downstream of smooth and rough rigid aprons under wall jets has been studied experimentally. Effect of apron roughness on scour has been investigated, and quantification of reduction in the scour depth due to rough apron has been performed. Characteristics of velocity and turbulence over smooth and rough aprons as well as within the scour hole have been analyzed to study the behavior of the jet and its interaction with the rough apron. Results show that there is a significant reduction in the equilibrium scour depth due to roughness. A maximum of 82.8% and a minimum of 31.1% reduction in the equilibrium scour depth was observed due to inducing roughness over the rigid apron. Velocity characteristics establish the cause of reduction in the equilibrium scour depth, which is due to reduction in the erosive capacity of the jet as it moves over the rough apron. The potential core of the jet gets consumed at a much lesser length due to roughness over the apron than over a smooth apron, as the boundary layer develops at a smaller distance. Further, it was observed that it takes a smaller length for the flow to get fully developed under the rough apron as compared with the smooth apron. Based on the results of the present analysis, recommendation can be made for use of roughness over the apron to restrict scour due to wall jets.
The aim of the study was to indicate the procedure of using laboratory physical model tests of scour around bridge piers for the purposes of determining the potential scour of a riverbed on field bridge crossings. The determination of the uniform modeling scale coefficient according to the criterion of reliable sediment diameter limits the application of the results of tests on physical models to selected types of sediment. The projected depths of scouring of the riverbed at the pier in nature were determined for an object reproduced in the scale of 1:15 determined from the relationship of flow resistance, expressed by hydraulic losses described by the Chézy velocity coefficient, the value of which, in the model and in nature, should be the same. Expressing the value of the Chézy velocity coefficient with the Manning roughness coefficient and introducing the Strickler parameter, it was shown that the coarse sand used in the laboratory bed models the flow resistance corresponding to the resistance generated by gravel in nature. The verification of the calculated size of scouring was based on popular formulas from Russian literature by Begam and Volčenkov [16], Laursen and Toch’s [20] from the English, and use in Poland according to the Regulation ... (Journal of Laws of 2000, No. 63, item 735) [32].

Celem pracy było wskazanie procedury wykorzystania laboratoryjnych fizycznych badań modelowych rozmyć wokół filarów mostowych dla potrzeb określenia potencjalnego rozmycia koryta rzecznego na terenowych przeprawach mostowych. Wykorzystanie wyników badań laboratoryjnych w prognozowaniu rozmyć wokół filarów nowo projektowanych mostów wymaga uwzględnienia wpływu skali modelu. W warunkach analizowanego zadania skalę modelu ustalono z relacji parametrów granulometrycznych rumowiska wykorzystanego w badaniach modelowych i rumowiska rzecznego w cieku, dla którego prowadzono prognozę rozmyć. Określenie współczynnika nieskażonej skali modelowania według kryterium miarodajnej średnicy rumowiska ogranicza zastosowanie wyników badań na modelach fizycznych do wybranych rodzajów rumowiska rzecznego. Wyrażając wartość współczynnika prędkości Chezy, współczynnikiem szorstkości Manninga i wprowadzając parametr Stricklera, wykazano, że piasek gruby zastosowany w korycie laboratoryjnym modeluje opory przepływu odpowiadające oporom jakie generuje żwir w naturze. Do weryfikacji obliczonych wielkości rozmyć wykorzystano popularne wśród projektantów formuły z literatury rosyjskiej Begama i Volčenkova [35], angielskiej Laursena i Tocha [36] oraz zalecane do stosowania w Polsce według Rozporządzenia… [5]. W rezultacie otrzymano wzory opisujące wielkości rozmyć dla badanego obiektu ze wskazaniem zakresów ich stosowania.

In this study, local scour occurring downstream from a nozzle with and without plates formed in cohesionless materials was investigated experimentally. The experiments were performed to determine scour geometry, maximum scour depth, and the efect of aeration on scour for water jets impinged obliquely into the downstream pool. Dimensionless variables afecting the scour were determined as densimetric Froude number, dimensionless impingement length, and the ratio of densimetric Froude number to dimensionless impingement length. Experiments were conducted for three nozzle diameters with plates, three nozzle diameters without plates, two diferent impingement lengths, and three diferent exit velocities. The results of the experiments showed that the use of the plates in the nozzle, jet impact velocity, jet shape, jet expansion, jet impingement length, and air entrainment rate were critical parameters for scour geometry. As a result, it was found that the jets from a nozzle with plates entrained more air bubbles into the impingement pool than jets from nozzles without plates, thereby decreasing maximum scour depth by spreading the scour over a larger area. This was evident by increasing the impingement length. In addition, scour equations were obtained to determine maximum scour depth, ridge height, and scour hole length from experimental data.
A comprehensive review of the local scour due to vortical fow around a cylindrical bridge pier under steady current is presented in this paper. The mechanism of the formation of vortices, the size, velocity and strength of horseshoe vortex (HSV), formation of the HSV by the separation of laminar and turbulent boundary layer and the scour around a cylindrical pier due to vortices have been presented. The complexity involved in the scour-related calculations, and the scope for future research are discussed in the last section.

The development of computer graphics forces new requirements on the developers, which will make the virtual world more similar to the real world. One of these elements is the simulation of fog. Common fog algorithms mix the color of the scene with the color of the fog over a certain distance. However, one feature of the naturally foggy scenery is ignored. With the distance and density of the fog, the observed scenery or individual objects become more blurred. In this paper we will present our implementation of the distance fog in the Unreal Engine 4, including the effect of blurring the foggy areas, simulating of light scattering and variations in fog density using noise.

Owing to inadequate degradation data, the randomness and the fuzziness of degradation processes, it is difficult to calculate the reliability of product. By investigating performance reliability using degradation data of performance, the authors proposed a method of analyzing reliability of performance degradation data using Monte Carlo principle and cloud theory. First of all, the performance degradation cloud with the degradation amount and the entropy which denotes the possible discrete degree of the degradation data, is generated by using performance degradation data and a cloud theory forward cloud generator. Then, the minimum membership threshold of cloud droplets and the threshold of product failure were set. Meanwhile, the number of cloud droplets that comply with the minimum membership degree and the failure threshold were counted. Finally, the reliability method of performance degradation data was proposed by using the principle of Monte Carlo and the cloud theory. In this work, the cloud theory was introduced to verify the reliability of the performance degradation of the product. The randomness and the fuzziness in the degradation tests are resolved. In addition, due to the limits of degradation test data, the difficulties in calculation of the reliability is resolved using the principle of Monte Carlo, the minimum membership of cloud droplets and its minimum degree are therefore guaranteed. This work provides a new method of simulating the reliability of degradation. The feasibility of the method was validated by an example ensuring a high durability of conveyor belt joints is tantamount to guaranteeing their reliable operation and that the results of research conducted so far fail to provide unambiguous solutions to a number of problems that emerge in this case, it is advisable that advanced studies using computer techniques should be conducted within this area.

W celu tworzenia syntetycznych obrazów cyfrowych bliskiego zasięgu, do badania dokładności i niezawodności zaawansowanych operatorów dopasowania (matching), opracowany został autorski program o nazwie Image Generator. Testowanie wygenerowanych w programie Image Generator obrazów cyfrowych z sygnalizowanymi punktami różnej wielkości przeprowadzono wykonując automatyczny pomiar współrzędnych w autorskim programie Matching (zastosowano metodę ważonego środka ciężkości CWM – Center Weighted Metod i metodę dopasowania najmniejszych kwadratów LSM – Least Squares Matching) oraz komercyjnym programie Pictran DE (metoda LSM). Pomierzone współrzędne pikselowe środka znaków porównano z teoretycznymi współrzędnymi, które obliczono metodą Newtona. Średnia odchyłka kwadratowa RMS różnic współrzędnych pikselowych dla obrazów zniekształconych dystorsjami geometrycznymi i radiometrycznymi wyniosła RMSΔx'y' ≤ 0.3 piksela.

In order to generate synthetic digital close range images for testing the accuracy and reliability of the advanced matching operators especially dedicated application Image Generator was developed. Image Generator can generate circular dark targets on bright background and the other way bright targets on dark background. Generating test digital images (*.bmp) with artificial targets in Image Generator requires defining the following parameters: image resolution, pixel size, target radius, distance between targets, brightness of the target and its background, background noise, target edge blur, sharpness level, calibration parameters of digital camera and interest area.. Radiometric parameters of the image are being defined by R, G, B color components and additionally by Gaussian noise with any size and noise strength and two boxfilters (9 and 25 elements mask). Brightness change of targets requires gradient introduction. Geometric image distortions are being modeled by systematic errors by Brown’s and El-Hakim’s and Beyer’s model which includes symmetric radial distortion, asymmetric and tangential radial distortion affinity and a shear of the sensor matrix. The free oriented images are processed with 2D projective transformation. The application additionally allows for creation of interest area for Matching software, image fragment (crop) generation, listing with pixel coordinates and brightness level. The Image Generator application was developed in Delphi 7 programming language. Tests of digital images with artificial targets of various sizes were conducted by automatic coordinates measurement in authors application Matching (CWM – center weighted method and LSM – least square method were applied), as well as in commercial software Pictran DE (LSM method). Measured pixel coordinates of targets centers were compared with theoretical coordinates, which were calculated using Newton method. Pixel coordinates discrepancies on radiometric and geometric distorted images amounted to RMS Δx'y' ≤ 0.3.

The scour below the dam is numerically simulated using an Eulerian two-phase model that implements Euler-Euler coupled governing equation for fluid and solid phase and a modified k-ε turbulence closure for the fluid phase and comparison with laboratory results. The modeling system being a part of CFD software package FLUENT. Both flow-particle and particle-particle interactions are considered in the model. During the simulations, the interface between sand and water is specified using a threshold volume fraction of sand. The predictions of bedform evolution are in good agreement with conducted laboratory measurements.

The paper presents results of investigations conducted on models of the dam in two scale with basin and horizontal bed protection. Range of investigations contained measurements of temporal velocity at a points on length of the channel below the bed protection. The measurements were conducted for two cases. The first consisted for measurements on flat and stable bed of channel and second for developing scour after 60, 120, 240 360 i 480 minutes. Results of measurements compared with calculated critical velocities for this same conditions. The measured velocity on flat bed and in the scour are smaller than critical velocities.
The destruction of the earth-fill cofferdam on the Wiory dam building site in July 2001 caused by overflowing has been described. The cofferdam was designed in accordance to the obligatory building rules. Its construction slowed down the velocity of its destruction and thanks to it the effects of the freshet downstream the building site have been diminished.
