The aim of the article is to identify the extent and the ways of applying the concept of the process management in Polish or-ganizations oriented to TQM. On the basis of surveys carried out among businesses of the Podkarpacie province, the authors demonstrate that an appointment of a process manager changes the way a business operates. The article offers a review of the most important - and still relatively infrequently referred to in professional literature - studies on the role of process orientation in managing small and medium-sized enterprises. The review leads the author to several conclusions that - with the growing popularity of process-oriented approach - should be of interest to both the researchers and practitioners involved with improving the management methods in SMEs sector.
