For over ten years, the Lower to Upper Tithonian boundary beds cropping out in the Owadów–Brzezinki quarry have yielded numerous fossils of ammonites, bivalves, brachiopods, xiphosurans, decapods, insects, and vertebrates – including actinopterygian fishes and various reptiles and others, all of which exhibit fine preservation of their anatomical details due to special environmental conditions during their fossilization. The Owadów–Brzezinki section is also important for stratigraphical correlations because it contains ammonite faunas indicative of the NE European and NW European Subboreal zonal schemes, as well as Tethyan calpionellids. The whole faunal as- semblage, which represents taxa of many iconic groups of Mesozoic animals, has created the opportunity to establish the ‘Owadów– Brzezinki geopark’, a geoeducation area where the public, and especially the young, can learn about the beauty of the natural history of the region.

Emil Lucjan Habdank Dunikowski - a graduate of the Lviv (Lwów), Munich and Vienna Universities, belongs to the circle of the Polish most significant scientists who specialized in Earth sciences and pursued their careers in the Lviv of the Austrian era. Sociable, diligent, and curious about the world, he devoted his time to discovering the mysteries of geology, actively developing Polish research in Galicia. While performing his research-related tasks in various parts of the globe (for example in North Africa, North America, Europe, and Russian Primorsky Krai), he satisfied his passion for travelling, delivering accurately made descriptions of broadly defined nature. In biographical contexts, the Lvovian scientist is seldom mentioned. Despite his undisputable scientific achievements and extensive travel experiences, there has yet to be a comprehensive biographical and bibliographical study dedicated to him. This article outlines his scientific profile and presents some unknown facts from Emil Dunikowski’s private life and career, based on the documents obtained from the State Archives of Lviv Oblast in Lviv (Ukraine).

The Paleozoic formations in the Middle East contain some of the world’s richest petroleum deposits, as they include excellent source and reservoir rocks. The Paleozoic rocks were deposited on the northern continental shelf of the Gondwanan continent at relatively high latitudes, and provide evidence of the Late Ordovician glacial event and associated sea-level changes. They also contain unique fossil remains. The Paleozoic formations exposed in the Al-Qassim Province in Saudi Arabia are well-suited to become important sites for geotourism. Because the sedimentary formations are well-exposed and are easily accessible, they have strong capacity for development as tourist destinations. In this paper, we describe eight localities and their significance as potential educational sites for geology and palaeontology, as well as the archeological and economic significance of the Paleozoic formations of Saudi Arabia. The cultural and tourist infrastructure is summarised and a two-day field excursion is proposed.

Utwory paleozoiku na Bliskim Wschodzie reprezentowane są zarówno przez skały macierzyste, jak i zbiornikowe, dlatego zawierają bogate złoża ropy naftowej. Zostały one zdeponowane na kontynentalnym szelfie Gondwany w chłodnym klimacie i wykazują ślady warunków glacjalnych i zmian poziomu morza związanych z glacjacją. Występują w nich także unikalne skamieniałości. Formacje paleozoiku w prowincji Al-Qassim w Arabii Saudyjskiej mają duży potencjał dla geoturystyki. Ponieważ są one łatwo dostępne i dobrze odsłonięte, mogą służyć jako ciekawe atrakcje turystyczne. W niniejszej pracy opisano osiem obiektów geoturystycznych, przedstawiając ich geologiczną (w tym paleontologiczną) charakterystykę wraz z ekonomicznym znaczeniem badanych formacji. Proponując dwudniową wycieczkę terenową po utworach paleozoiku, wskazano także dwa obiekty archeologiczne. Omówiono również infrastrukturę kulturalną i turystyczną.

Palaeontological geotourism could be one of many forms of propagating geological values of a country. It can meet the expectations of many tourists. For this broad category of people, paleontological tourism can instill curiosity about the extinct world, offering them places where they can feel like explorers, visiting these sites with a hammer and a chisel. Many of them will cherish the memories of adventures made during the search in the future, and some will find a new passion. Similar practices are used in Germany, for example, in Solnhofen or Holzmaden, where fossil exploration is available for a small fee. In most regions of Poland, you can find numerous places with fossils that anyone can search for. The greatest number of such sites can be found in the south of Poland, in the uplands and mountains, but also at the seaside, where the practice of palaeontological geotourism is possible. In the Holy Cross Mountains, the Sudetes, or in the Silesian-Cracow region, there are places where one finds fossils of plants or animals, including trace fossils. The only effort required in addition to the search for fossils is to develop guidelines and prepare guides for amateurs that quest for the lost world.

Geoturystyka paleontologiczna może być jedną z form propagowania walorów geologicznych kraju. Może spełnić oczekiwania wielu turystów. Chodzi o szeroką grupę ludzi, których można zainteresować wymarłym światem, umożliwiając im zwiedzanie miejsc, gdzie mogą poczuć się jak odkrywcy, odwiedzając je z młotkiem i dłutem. Wielu z nich będzie w przyszłości pielęgnować wspomnienia o przygodach w trakcie poszukiwań, a część z nich znajdzie swoją pasję. Podobne praktyki stosuje się np. w Niemczech – w Solnhofen czy Holzmaden, gdzie za drobną opłatą można poszukiwać skamieniałości. W większości regionów Polski można znaleźć liczne miejsca ze skamieniałościami, których poszukiwać może każdy. Najwięcej takich stanowisk spotkamy na południu Polski, w strefach wyżyn i gór, ale i nad morzem uprawianie paleontologicznej geoturystyki jest możliwe. W Górach Świętokrzyskich, Sudetach czy rejonie śląsko-krakowskim są miejsca, w których znajdziemy skamieniałości roślin lub zwierząt, a także same skamieniałości śladowe. Wymaga to jedynie wysiłku opracowania wskazówek i przewodników dla amatorów poszukiwań zaginionego świata.

At its maximum development in the type area on the Devon coast, the Upper Greensand Formation comprises up to 55 m of sandstones and calcarenites with laterally and stratigraphically variable amounts of carbonate cement, glauconite and chert that were deposited in fully marine, shallow-water environments. The formation is divided into three members, in ascending order the Foxmould, Whitecliff Chert and Bindon Sandstone, each of which is bounded by a prominent erosion surface that can be recognised throughout the western part of the Wessex Basin. The full thickness of the formation, up to 60 m, was formerly well exposed in cliffs in the Isle of Purbeck in the steeply dipping limb of the Purbeck Monocline. The upper part of the succession is highly condensed in comparison with the Devon succession and exhibits lateral variations over distances of hundreds of metres that are probably related to penecontemporaneous fault movements. Much of the fauna is not age-diagnostic with the result that the ages of parts of the succession are still poorly known. However, the Isle of Purbeck sections contain diverse ammonite faunas at a few stratigraphically well-defined levels that enable the succession to be correlated with that of east Devon and west Dorset.

Here we briefly report the discovery of new, exceptionally well-preserved Late Jurassic (Tithonian) fossils from Owadow- Brzezinki quarry - one of the most important palaeontological sites in Poland. These finds which comprise organisms living originally in different environments indicate that the Owadow-Brzezinki site represents a link - most probably in a form of open marine passages - betweeen distinct palaeobiogeographical provinces. This creates an unprecedented opportunity for better recognition of the regional palaeobiogeography of adjacent European areas during the Late Jurassic.

Palaeontological fieldwork (2012‒14) in the Sadowa Góra quarry carried out under the auspices of the University of Silesia, within the framework of a research project supported by the National Science Centre, helped to document the taxonomic diversity of Middle Triassic marine vertebrates from the Cracow-Silesia region. Accumulations of fossil bones are correlated with storm deposition and are time-averaged.

This multidisciplinary study, based on borehole cores from the Hluchov area in Czech Republic, documents an early Badenian marine transgression on the outer flank of the Western Carpathian Foredeep. The shallow-marine deposits represent coastal transgression over a terrestrial topography of weathered pre-Cenozoic bedrock. The lower facies association (FA1) consists of siliciclastic sediment derived from local substrate erosion. Facies indicate a wave-dominated environment with unstable bottom, variable rate of sediment supply and an incremental rise of relative sea level. The upper facies association (FA2) consists of carbonates indicating a major landward shift of shoreline, decline in siliciclastic input and further sea-level rise. The succession represents a transgressive to highstand systems tract. The maximum flooding surface, ca. 1 m above the FA1/FA2 boundary, is signified by an anomalous decrease in K and Th, an increased Th/K ratio and highest U concentration. The heavy-mineral assemblages in FA1 confirm local sediment provenance, whereas those in FA2 indicate broader sediment derivation, including volcanic component from contemporaneous rhyolitic to rhyodacitic eruptions. The deposits contain a wide range of marine fauna, with the foraminifers and molluscs indicating an early Badenian age. Molluscs, bryozoans and echinoderms indicate a normal-salinity environment with a decreasing hydraulic energy. Foraminifers indicate salinity fluctuations in the lowest part of the succession. The isotopic composition of mollusc shells shows marked inter-species differences and a general negative shift in the δ13C and δ18O values, indicating diagenetic alteration. The impact of diagenetic processes appears to have been controlled by sedimentary facies. The highly negative δ13C and δ18O values correspond to sediment layers with the highest Th/K ratios and hence low clay content. Sediment permeability was thus probably crucial in controlling the differential circulation and impact of diagenetic fluids.

In this work, the biography of Józef Siemiradzki (1858-1933) has been documented by various archival materials, and accompanied by the list of his most important publications. Józef Siemiradzki was a Professor of Palaeontology at Jan Kazimierz University in Lvov, Member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, Honorary Member of the Polish Geological Institute, Commander of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Defender of Lvov, awarded the Cross of Valour. He co-operated with the Museum of the Physiographic Commission in Kraków and the Dzieduszycki Museum in Lvov. He was a representative of the National Department of the Galician Sejm in the expedition to Brazil in aim to support Polish emigrants. He wrote over 60 treatises, e.g. "Explanations to the Geological Map" - the first synthetic presentation of the geological structure of Polish lands, "Geology of Polish Lands" - the first monograph on the geological structure of Poland written in 20th century, and "Palaeozoology" - the first Polish textbook on palaeontology for academic use. In the field of palaeontology and stratigraphy he has been known as an author of the monograph on the Upper Jurassic ammonites from the Kraków Upland and the monograph on the genus Perisphinctes of Western Europe.

Upper Cretaceous strata are well exposed in many areas of Japan, although good exposures through the Turonian/Coniacian boundary are not common. This paper focuses on six areas in Hokkaido, Shikoku and Kyushu and documents the stratigrophical distributions of inoceramid species. These data are used to summarise the stratigraphical ranges of Turonian/Coniacian taxa in Japan. In part 1 of the paper, 17 species are described, with some biometric data and phylogenetic interpretation. These species are: Inoceramus (Inoceramus) hobestensis NAGAO & MATSUMOTO, I. (I.) teshioensis NAGAO & MATSUMOTO, I. (I.) iburiensis NAGAO & MATSUMOTO, I. (I>) tenuistriatus NAGAO & MATSUMOTO, I.(I.) pedalionoides NAGAO & MATSUMOTO, I.(I.) lusatiae ANDERT, I.(I.) uwajimensis YEHARA, I. (Cremnoceramus) rotundatus FIEGE, I. (Cr.) ernsti HEINZ, I. (Cr.) deformis MEEK, I. (Cr.) lueckendorfensis TROGER, I. (Platyceramus) tappuensis nom., nov., I. (Pl.) szaszi NODA & UCHIDA, I. (Volviceramus) koeneni MULLER, Mytiloides incertus (JIMBO), M. mytiloidiformis (TROGER), and M. sublabiatus (MULLER). In part 2, the stratigraphical distribution and correlation of these species are discussed.

The stratigraphy, ammonite and inoceramid content of the Turonian - Coniacian deposits of Far East Russia are presented. The evolution of North Pacific ammonites and inoceramids at the boundary of the two stages was studied and the levels of fundamental changes within the ammonite and inoceramid biota are recognized. The established palaeogeographic difference between the Sakhalin and the North-East region palaeobasins is reflected in the existence of two independent local zonal schemes. The main criteria of the Turonian-Coniacian stage boundary in the Far East of Russia were established on the basis of the two schemes. The Turonian/Coniacian (T/C) boundary is clearly marked by the change in the taxonomic diversity of the zonal inoceramid assemblages. It is defined at the base of the Inoceramus uwajimensis Zone. The appearance of the endemic ammonite species. Jimboiceras mihoense MATSUMOTO is the ammonite criterion for recognising the T/C stage boundary in Sakhalin. This is supported by occurrences of the cosmopolitan Coniacian genera Peroniceras and Forresteria.
