Content available The Effect of Air Pollution on Fertility Intentions

Together with fast economic growths in recent decades and subsequent environmental pollutions, fertility rates have declined dramatically in China. Considering fertility intention is an essential predictor for fertility rate, we examine the effect of air pollution on fertility intentions in China. Using data from the China General Social Survey (CGSS) collected in 2010 and 2013, we find a negative and significant impact of air pollution on people’s fertility intentions. More importantly, after we restrict the sample to people who have been living in current places for a long period of time, the estimated effect of air pollution decreases but remains significant, indicating existence of endogeneity of air pollution on fertility intentions. For the government to take measures to raise fertility rates in China, it is important to take into account the factor of air pollution.

Wraz z szybkim wzrostem gospodarczym w ostatnich dziesięcioleciach i późniejszym zanieczyszczeniem środowiska, wskaźniki dzietności w Chinach dramatycznie spadły. Biorąc pod uwagę, że intencja płodności jest podstawowym predyktorem współczynnika dzietności, badamy wpływ zanieczyszczenia powietrza na intencje dzietności w Chinach. Korzystając z danych z China General Social Survey (CGSS), zebranych w 2010 i 2013 r., wskazujemy na negatywny i znaczący wpływ zanieczyszczenia powietrza na intencje ludzi w zakresie płodności. Co ważniejsze, po ograniczeniu próby do osób, które mieszkają w obecnych miejscach od dłuższego czasu, szacowany wpływ zanieczyszczenia powietrza maleje, ale pozostaje znaczący, wskazując na istnienie endogeniczności zanieczyszczenia powietrza na intencje płodności. Stwierdzamy, że aby rząd mógł podjąć działania mające na celu podniesienie współczynnika dzietności w Chinach, konieczne jest uwzględnienie czynnika zanieczyszczenia powietrza.

Results presented in this study were collected within the framework of a project aiming at the determination of potential for vendace colonisation and production in lakes of western Poland and as such they are a continuation of previously published studies. The objective of studies carried out in 2011 was to investigate the most important biological traits of the population of the vendace from Lake Chłop lying in the Lubuskie Lakeland and to compare the results to the literature data, including those from the previously described Lake Śremskie. To achieve the objective of the research the following parameters were studied: sex structure, growth rate, fish condition, fertility as well as biometric and meristic traits of the studied vendance. At the same time, the most important physicochemical water indices were determined to provide a characteristic of the environmental conditions. The status of water was classified as moderate, with the deterioration of the water status caused by the low oxygen saturation of the hypolimnion and high contents of chlorophyll a. The vendace from the investigated water body may be classified to the fish group of very good growth rate and condition, only slightly inferior to the vendace from Lake Śremskie. In the third year of life this species reaches on average the total length of 22.0 cm, while Fulton’s index of fish condition ranged from 0.68 to 1.10 with a mean value of 0.82. We need to stress here markedly lower fecundity of the vendace population from Lake Chłop in comparison to the population from Lake Śremskie. Considering the quantitative traits, the fish population of Lake Chłop differs non-significantly regarding the body depth in the populations with a good growth rate described by Bernatowicz. The meristic traits of the studied population do not significantly deviate from the values reported by other researchers, except for filtration processes.

Przedstawione w pracy wyniki zgromadzono w ramach projektu, mającego na celu rozpoznanie możliwości bytowania i produkcji sielawy w jeziorach zachodniej Polski, są zatem kontynuacją opublikowanych wcześniej badań. Celem przeprowadzonych w 2011 roku badań było poznanie najważniejszych parametrów biologicznych populacji sielawy z jeziora Chłop, leżącego na Pojezierzu Lubuskim oraz porównanie uzyskanych wyników do danych literaturowych, w tym do wyników z opisywanego wcześniej jeziora Śremskiego. Aby zrealizować cel badań określono strukturę płci, wiek, tempo wzrostu, kondycję, płodność, a także cechy populacyjne (mierzalne i policzalne) badanych sielaw. Równocześnie oznaczono najważ- niejsze wskaźniki fizykochemiczne oraz biologiczne wody, pozwalające scharakteryzować warunki środowiskowe. Stan ekologiczny wód jeziora uznano jako umiarkowany, parametrami zaniżającymi ocenę były niskie nasycenie hypolimnionu tlenem oraz wysoka zawartość chlorofilu a. Sielawa z badanego zbiornika należy do grupy o bardzo dobrym wzroście i kondycji, nieznacznie tylko ustępując sielawie z jeziora Śremskiego. W trzecim roku życia osiąga średnio 22,0 cm długości całkowitej, wartość wskaźnika kondycji Fultona dla całej próby wahała się od 0,68 do 1,1, przy średniej 0,82. Uwagę zwraca znacznie niższa płodność sielawy z jeziora Chłop, w stosunku do populacji z jeziora Śremskiego. Pod względem cech mierzalnych badana populacja nieznacznie różni się pod względem wygrzbiecenia od innych populacji o bardzo dobrym wzroście, opisanych przez Bernatowicza. Cechy policzalne badanej populacji nie odstają od wartości podanych przez innych badaczy, z wyjątkiem liczby wyrostków filtracyjnych.

The objective of studies carried out in 2011 was to investigate the most important biological traits of the spawning population of the vendace from Lake Lake Śremskie lying in the Międzychód-Sieraków Lakeland and to compare the results to the literature data. The biological material was obtained in the autumn, immediately before spawning. To achieve the objective of the research the following features were studied: sex structure, growth rate, fish condition, fertility as well as biometric and meristic traits of the studied vendance. At the same time, the most important physico-chemical water indices were determined to provide a characteristic of the environmental conditions. On the basis of physical and chemical indicators the status of water was classified as good. The vendace from the investigated water body may be classified to the group of very good growth rate (significantly above the average), reaching in the third year of life on average the total length of 22.4 cm. Fulton’s index of fish condition ranged from 0.78 to 1.25 with a mean value of 0.89. The mean absolute fertility was 12714 eggs, while relative fertility was 11994 eggs per 100 g of body mass. Considering the quantitative traits, the fish population of Lake Śremskie differs non-significantly regarding the greatest and the smallest body height from the populations with a good growth rate described by Bernatowicz. The meristic traits of the studied population do not significantly deviate from the values reported by other researchers, except for filtration processes.

Celem przeprowadzonych w 2011 roku badań było poznanie najważniejszych parametrów biologicznych populacji sielawy z jeziora Śremskiego, leżącego na pojezierzu Międzychodzko-Sierakowskim oraz porównanie uzyskanych wyników do danych literaturowych. Materiał biologiczny pozyskano w okresie jesiennym, tuż przed rozpoczęciem tarła. Aby zrealizować cel badań określono strukturę płci, wiek, tempo wzrostu, kondycję, płodność, a także cechy populacyjne (mierzalne i policzalne) badanych sielaw. Równocześnie oznaczono najważniejsze wskaźniki fizykochemiczne wody, pozwalające scharakteryzować warunki środowiskowe jeziora. Na podstawie wskaźników fizykochemicznych stan wód zbiornika uznano jako dobry. Sielawa z badanego zbiornika należy do grupy o bardzo dobrym wzroście (znacznie powyżej średniej krajowej), osiągając w trzecim roku życia średnio 22,4 cm długości całkowitej. Wartość wskaźnika kondycji Fultona wahała się od 0,78 do 1,25, przy średniej 0,89. Średnia płodność absolutna wyniosła 12714 szt. jaj, natomiast płodność względna 11994 szt. jaj na 100 g masy ciała. Biorąc pod uwagę cechy mierzalne populacja śremska nieznacznie różni się pod względem wysokości ciała od innych populacji o dobrym wzroście, opisanych przez Bernatowicza. Cechy policzalne badanej populacji nie odstają od wartości podanych przez innych badaczy, z wyjątkiem liczby wyrostków filtracyjnych.

Content available remote Clutch size variation in agile frog Rana dalmatica on post-mining areas

Clutch size is an important life history trait in amphibians, and it varies among and within species, populations and individuals. Within a population, its variation has been attributed to a positive relationship between females’ age or size and their fecundity as well as to spatio-temporal differences in environmental conditions. Therefore, clutch size has been shown to be both spatially and seasonally variable. We examined spatial and seasonal clutch size variation based upon two years of study involving 160 clutches of the Agile Frog Rana dalmatina Bonaparte, 1840 in 14 ponds within one spoil bank in the Czech Republic’s North Bohemian brown coal basin. The overall mean clutch size was 1295 (SD 596), which is one of the largest that has been reported. However, both clutch size and its variance differed considerably between the years. Clutch size also varied among the ponds. We found no relationship between clutch size and the distance of a breeding pond from alluvial forest, a typical wintering habitat. Despite existence at the site of many suitable reproduction habitats, the spoil bank does not offer the complex of all habitats needed for persistence of the R. dalmatina population. To protect that population, it is necessary to preserve not only breeding ponds on the spoil bank but also alluvial forest and, most importantly, the connectivity between these two crucial habitats.

Reproduction is the most important factor in population dynamics and invading freshwater habitats by Viviparus viviparus. This is largely associated with ovoviviparity of these snails. Some traits like steered reproduction, the appearance of young snails during the whole year, protection of embryos by female and delayed reproduction were fixed by natural selection as adaptations increasing the chance for progeny survival. In variable habitats like oxbow lakes seasonally joined to the river channel, Viviparidae start reproducing in the early stage of their life hence increasing a chance for population to survive. Studies on fecundity, embryonic development of V. viviparus and the relationships between these parameters and females. body size and weight, were carried out in oxbow lakes periodically connected to the river (the Bug River, Central Poland). The Bug River is one of a few European rivers which preserved their nearly natural character. No larger hydrotechnical works have been made in its valley, therefore, the river flows in a natural, meandering channel and forms numerous oxbow lakes. The surrounding of studied oxbow lakes is flat and of lowland character with mixed land use structure (arable lands, grasslands, settlements). Oxbow lakes are fed by the runoff from flood terrace, hence their waters are more fertile than those of the river. Two lakes were selected: Lake Szumin, area 17 ha, Lake Wywłoka - area 23 ha. Maximum depth of both lakes is ca 3 m. Samples of V. viviparus were collected in the years 2003-2007 with a bottom drag during the successive seasons from five sites in each oxbow lake. The embryos were found in females of the II (8.1-12.0 mm of width and height), III (12.1-20.0 mm width and 12.1-25.0 mm height) and IV (over 25.0 mm height and over 20.0 mm width) size classes. Three developmental stages were distinguished in embryonic growth: the oval transparent egg capsules (called the youngest embryos), egg capsules with visible contour of a shell (called medium embryos) and snails with a shell (the oldest embryos). The youngest growth stages of embryos (in a form of oval transparent egg capsules) dominated in all size classes of females. Medium growth stages (egg capsules with visible outlines of the shell) and the oldest ones (with shell) were represented in smaller proportion. The highest number of the youngest embryos per female were found in females of the II size class. The proportions of the embryo growth stages varied seasonally. The number of embryos per female and the degree of their development increased with the increase of shell (height, width, dry weight) and body (dry weight) parameters. High fecundity of the youngest females of V. viviparus is probably an adaptation to unstable habitat conditions of oxbow lakes.

Studies on the fecundity of V. viviparus were carried out in the years 1990-1994 in selected littoral sites of the Zegrzyński Reservoir (Central Poland) (60 km long, mean depth ca. 3.5 m, maximum depth at the dam up to 9 m, mean retention time from 1 to 15 days) and in outflow stretches of its tributaries. All sites were dominated by fertile females (i.e. having embryos) that lived in aggregations. Mean numbers of females ranged between 30 and 250 ind. m[^-2]. Females of III (shells 12.1 - 20.0 mm wide and 12.1 - 25.0 m high) and IV (20.1 - 25.0 mm width and 25.1 - 35.0 mm height) size class dominated. The embryos were noticed in females of II (8.1 - 12.0 mm width and height of the shell), III and IV size class and mean number of embryos per female was from 0.9 to 6.7, from 1.1 to 9.6 and from 2.0 to 9.1 for II, III and IV class respectively. Analysis of embryonic development revealed the presence of three growth stages in oviducts of females: the oval, transparent egg capsules called the youngest embryos), egg capsules with visible contour of a shell (called medium embryos) and snails with a shell (the oldest embryos). Embryos in a form of oval, transparent egg capsules and snails with developed shell dominated in particular size classes in analysed sites. Analysis of the correlation coefficient showed significant positive relationship between the mean sum of embryos and shell height and width, and dry weight of female's body and shell weight. Most significant correlation was found between dry body weight and mean number of embryos. The number of embryos in particular growth stages was also related to biometric indices as shown by the analysis of correlation coefficients. The number of oldest embryos (fully developed snails with a shell) increased with the increase of shell height and width. Female.s dry body weight, on the other hand, was best correlated with the youngest growth stage of embryos (oval, transparent egg capsules). Described relationships indicate the importance of the size of V. viviparus females for reproductive success and for survival and "condition" of young snails.

The length and body weight at subsequent annuli of four facultative riverine fish species: roach (Rutilus rutilus L.), perch (Perca fluviatilis L.), bream (Abramis brama L.) and pike (Esox lucius L.) living in lakes and rivers were compared on the basis of published data. Pike grew better in lakes (significant differences in length, and some for weight), but the other species in rivers. However, significant differences between medians were observed in all cases only for body length of roach, in many cases for the length of bream, as well as a few for its weight, and no one for perch. Comparable data on relative fecundity in both habitats were available for roach and pike. Pike females produced more eggs in lakes, but roach - in rivers, and the differences were significant.

The effect of zinc and cadmium on the biology of entomopathogenic nematodes bas been studied. Observations pertained mainly to fertility and pathogenicity of the nematodes whose populations dwelled in metal contaminated soils for many years. Concentrations of zinc in the studied area varied from 57.4 mg . kg[to -1] to 1105 mg . kg[to -1] soil and those of cadmium - from 0.36 to 8.12 mg . kg[to -1] soil. Plots were divided into groups based on lead contamination, as regards to other metals the division was based upon inventory. We selected plots of similar soils, with lead content < 80 mg . kg[to -1] and overgrown by the same plants. Four groups of plots of different heavy metal contamination were distinguished.

Zbadano wpływ cynku i kadmu na biologię entomopatogennych nicieni. Obserwacje dotyczyły głównie płodności i patogeniczności nicieni, których populacje przebywają od wielu lat w glebach skażonych tymi pierwiastkami. Na badanym terenie cynk występuje w ilości od 57,4 mg . kg[do -1] do 1105 mg. kg-[do -1] gleby, kadm od 0,36 mg . kg[do -1]-4,12 mg . kg[do -1] gleby. Działki pogrupowane są na grupy zanieczyszczenia tylko pod względem ołowiu. Jeżeli chodzi o pozostałe metale wybierano je na podstawie "Inwentaryzacji" opracowanej przez Katedrze Gleboznawstwa SGGW. Wybrano te działki, gdzie był podobny typ gleby, stopień skażenia ołowiem < 80 mg . kg[do -1] oraz gdzie były uprawiane takie same rośliny. Utworzono pięć grup działek o różnym stopniu skażenia wybranymi metalami ciężkimi.

The study was carried out near the Battery Enterprise in Piastów near Warsaw, PL, which operates for 78 years and emits lead compounds to the soil. The presence and pathogenicity of the nematodes Steinernematidae and Heterorhabditidae was already analysed in the area. Now, we have determined the fertility of Steinernematidae females and of hermaphrodite forms of Heterorhabditidae, both collected in the areas variably polluted with lead. We have found that: a) fertility of females and hermaphrodite forms developing from the invasive larvae of entomopathogenic nematodes from polluted areas is inversely proportional to the ground pollution b) fertility of Steinernematidae is two times higher than that of Heterorhabditidae

Badania wykonano dla obszaru w pobliżu Fabryki Akumulatorów w Piastowie, która pracuje nieprzerwanie od 77 lat i emituje do gleby związki ołowiu. W tym rejonie badano występowanie i patogeniczność nicieni Steinernematidae i Heterorhabditidae. Obecnie zbadano płodność samic Steinernematidae i form obojnaczych Heterorhabditidae pozyskanych z terenów o różnym stopniu skażenia ołowiem. W wyniku przeprowadzonych badań stwierdzono: a) płodność samic i form obojnaczych nicieni rozwijających się z larw inwazyjnych nicieni entomopatogenicznych, które występują na obszarze skażonym jest odwrotnie proporcjonalna do skażenia terenu b) płodność Steinernematidae jest dwukrotnie wyższa od Heterorhabditidae.
