The article addresses the issue of the Portuguese conservation approach to religious buildings in Lisbon that have been damaged by cataclysms. The aim is to show approach to both preserving the original substance and changing the function of the sacral building. After the tragic destruction of Lisbon in the mid-18th century was followed by the use of the ruins of the Carmelite monastery church, Convento do Carmo, for adaptation into the Archaeological Museum. Church of the Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha, also acts as a remnant of historic events. The Church of St Dominic is also an example of atypical conservation and restoration. Another one is the adaptation the São Julião church on the Museum of the Bank of Portugal. That projects are examples of pioneering conservation activities conceived as a result of the conservation practice of Portuguese architects.

Artykuł porusza problem portugalskiego podejścia konserwatorskiego do obiektów sakralnych w Lizbonie, które uległy zniszczeniu w wyniku kataklizmów. Celem jest ukazanie interesującego podejścia zarówno do zachowania oryginalnej substancji, jak i zmiany funkcji obiektów sakralnych. Po tragicznym zniszczeniu Lizbony w połowie XVIII wieku ruiny kościoła klasztoru karmelitów Convento do Carmo wykorzystano do adaptacji na Muzeum Archeologiczne. Znakiem historycznych wydarzeń jest także kościół Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha. Przykładem nietypowej konserwacji i restauracji jest także kościół Igreja de São Domingos. Kolejnym przykładem jest adaptacja zniszczonego kościoła São Julião na siedzibę Muzeum Banku Portugalii. Projekty te są przykładami pionierskich działań konserwatorskich powstałych w wyniku praktyki konserwatorskiej portugalskich architektów.

To ensure safety in underground mining, it is imperative to equip yourself with electric leakage protection. Today, underground mines are gaining a high degree of mechanization and using more power electronics to enhance the operation and organization of power supplies, including the application of power electronics for DC power transmission in mining. i.e., separate the rectifier (AC-DC) from the inverter (DC-AC) with a long DC cable. The transmission of DC power changes the structure of the mine power network; then there will appear a power network with an industrial frequency of 50 Hz, a DC power network, and a power network after the variable frequency inverter. Due to the mutual interaction between DC power networks and AC power networks, leakage protection devices are unreliable, causing unsafe conditions in mining. The content of the article is to determine the leakage current in the power network when using converters in DC power transmission in mining. The research results are the basis for calculating and selecting leakage protection equipment for the purpose of improving safety in underground mining in Vietnam.

Artykuł przypomina o konieczności przygotowania dokumentacji wykonawczej robót betonowych prowadzonych w okresie obniżonych temperatur oraz ochrony i pielęgnacji zabetonowanej konstrukcji. Wskazano zmiany normowe oraz w dokumentach branżowych, które pozwalają precyzyjnie sformułować wymagania dostosowane do przewidywanych warunków betonowania. Zwrócono uwagę na konieczność zwiększenia czujności w prognozowaniu zagrożeń dla betonowania zimowego, wynikających ze zmian klimatycznych i zmian asortymentu stosowanych cementów.

The article reminds about the need to prepare execution documentation for concrete works carried out in the period of low temperatures as well as protection and care of the concreted structure. Changes in standards and in industry documents were indicated, which allow for precise formulation of requirements adapted to the forecasted concreting conditions. Attention was drawn to the need to increase vigilance in forecasting threats to winter concreting, resulting from climate change and changes in the range of cements used.

The article discusses the symbolism and richness of the culture of the Polish Tatars living in the villages of Bohoniki and Kruszyniany, located in Podlaskie Province. The centuries-old tradition, as well as the customs cultivated and maintained to this day by the Tatar population, are a treasure trove of the history of times past and undeniable proof of the existence of genius loci. Despite the unique architectural and cultural values presented by both villages and the fact that the mosques and mizars located there are included in the national list of monuments and have been recognized as monuments of history, the cultural landscape of the villages is exposed to changes and distortions as a result of the industrial investments planned here. These activities will undoubtedly negatively affect the image of the village, both spatially, naturally and socially. One of the ways of protecting Tatar culture has become the creation of a cultural park in Bohoniki, the purpose of which is to strengthen the protection of monuments located in its area, as well as to consolidate the village’s tourist potential. In turn in Kruszyniany, the creation of industrial poultry farms is to be prevented by the establishment of a landscape park, whose priority will be both the protection of the surrounding nature of the Knyszyn Forest, as well as the protection of the multicultural heritage of the village. The text also addresses legal issues of protection from the perspective of the regulations on the functioning of the cultural and landscape park, as well as describing the actions taken in this regard by the residents themselves, local authorities and conservation services. The aim of the text is to draw attention to the problem of comprehensive protection of monuments and cultural heritage of the Polish Tatars in the context of modern civilization transformations and related landscape changes.

W artykule omówiono symbolikę i bogactwo kultury Tatarów polskich zamieszkujących położone w województwie podlaskim wsie Bohoniki i Kruszyniany. Wielowiekowa tradycja, a także kultywowane i podtrzymywane po dziś dzień przez ludność tatarską zwyczaje stanowią skarbnicę historii czasów minionych oraz niepodważalny dowód na istnienie genius loci. Pomimo unikatowych wartości architektoniczno-kulturowych, jakie prezentują obydwie miejscowości, oraz faktu, iż znajdujące się tam meczety i mizary wpisane zostały na krajową listę zabytków oraz uznane za pomniki historii, krajobraz kulturowy wsi narażony jest na przemiany i zniekształcenia w wyniku planowanych tam inwestycji przemysłowych. Działania te mogą niewątpliwe negatywnie odbić się na wizerunku wsi, zarówno pod względem przestrzennym, przyrodniczym, jak i społecznym. Jednym ze sposobów ochrony kultury tatarskiej stało się utworzenie w Bohonikach parku kulturowego, którego celem ma być wzmocnienie ochrony zabytków znajdujących się na jego obszarze, jak również ugruntowanie potencjału turystycznego wsi. W Kruszynianiach z kolei zamierzenia powstania ferm przemysłowych drobiu ma powstrzymać powołanie tam parku krajobrazowego, którego priorytetem będzie zarówno ochrona otaczającej przyrody Puszczy Knyszyńskiej, jak i wielokulturowego dziedzictwa. W tekście poruszono też prawne kwestie ochrony z perspektywy przepisów dotyczących funkcjonowania parku kulturowego i krajobrazowego oraz opisano działania, jakie w tym zakresie podjęli sami mieszkańcy, władze samorządowe i służby konserwatorskie. Ma to na celu zwrócenie uwagi na problem kompleksowej ochrony zabytków i dziedzictwa kulturowego Tatarów polskich w kontekście współczesnych przemian cywilizacyjnych i związanych z nimi zmian krajobrazowych.

The Brazilians enthusiastically welcomed the decision to grant them the right to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. The decision to grant Brazil the organization of such a large and spectacular mass sports event to be held in Rio de Janeiro entailed certain risks. This was mainly due to the alarming crime and violence rates in the city, which were largely related to drug trafficking. The decision of the International Olympic Committee sparked a global discussion which questioned Brazil's ability to guarantee the safety of participants in the 2016 Olympics, following the 2014 FIFA World Cup which it also hosted. This article analyzes and assesses the security system of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro organized by the Brazilian authorities, which, according to the organizers' intentions, was to effectively counter the projected internal and external threats. In this context, Brazil's actions for the safety of the Olympic Games deserve recognition and can be a good example for future organizers of this type of mass sporting events. This applies to activities undertaken by the organizers that had the greatest impact on the preparation, organization and functioning of the safety system during the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In this regard, a certain specificity of activities undertaken by the organizers should be noted, which not only focused on combating terrorist threats, but were also aimed at countering internal threats, mainly the organized crime.

The article refers to the ongoing discussion around the idea of geological heritage protection. In this context, the genesis, course and results of the activities of the Commission for Nature Conservation of the Polish Geological Institute, operating in 1926–1934, have been recalled. This commission, acting on the initiative of S. Małkowski, contributed to the recognition, implementation and dissemination of the idea of protection of geological features. It also made a significant contribution to the theoretical and practical achievements in this area. Due to many publications, the results of commission's activity were disseminated in the country and abroad. In 1928, the “Zabytki Przyrody Nieożywionej Rzeczpospolitej Polskiej” (Eng. “Monuments of Geological Features of the Republic of Poland”, Fr. “Monuments de la Nature Inanimée de la République Polonaise”) was the only journal in the world that specialized exclusively on the geological features.

Abandoned quarries in the Wieluń Upland at Działoszyn and Wieluń in central Poland are of unique value for the detailed stratigraphical, palaeontological, sedimentological and palaeogeographical studies of the Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian stages (especially the Upper Oxfordian and Lower Kimmeridgian substages) of the Jurassic System in Europe. It is because they yield the successions of deposits containing diverse assemblages of ammonites of a great significance for stratigraphical correlation, including that corresponding to the stratigraphical interval at the newly accepted global stratotype (GSSP) between the Oxfordian and the Kimmeridgian. Moreover, the quarries show the last Late Jurassic deposits placed towards the west in central Poland and preserved against the erosion, thus of high importance for the palaeogeographical reconstructions. The quarries offer also a special opportunity for educational purposes, and might become local geological attractions as they contain abundant fossils. Additionally, due to the fact that the Wieluń Upland, especially the environs of Działoszyn, has been one of the main areas of exploitation of limestones in Poland - the scientific value of the collected material and the history of the limestone mining could be presented in a specially prepared exhibition at the local museum, supported by geo-educational paths marked out in the abandoned quarries. Cooperation between the scientific community, local administration centers, and the owners of the quarries is of fundamental importance for the subject.

This paper analyses in detail the problems of protecting cultural heritage in rural regions and small towns, in traditional rural landscapes and in the context of the revival of rural settlements. The paper substantiates the necessity and possibility of measures for the preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage by measures of both organisational and technical nature. The international experience of safeguarding cultural heritage by organisational measures and digital preservation is considered; the need to correct this experience in accordance with local specifics is substantiated. The existing technical approaches to the digital preservation of cultural heritage are analysed. An original approach is proposed that most fully simulates complex objects such as artistic reliefs with painting – the method of synchronised laser triangulation, combined with the method of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy.

Coraz częściej w Polsce występują niespotykane wcześniej oddziaływania klimatyczne wynikające z efektu cieplarnianego i nadmiernej emisji dwutlenku węgla do atmosfery. Zjawiska te powodują znaczące straty materialne w gospodarce krajowej, mogą również stanowić zagrożenie dla zdrowia i życia ludzi. W referacie omówiono genezę zmian klimatu; zakres analiz ograniczono do oddziaływań huraganowych wiatrów i trąb powietrznych, wywołujących rozległe uszkodzenia elementów infrastruktury i obiektów budowlanych oraz zniszczenia drzewostanu w obszarach leśnych. Omówiono skutki tych oddziaływań, ilustrując je przykładami praktycznymi. Przedstawiono również kierunki zapobiegania i ograniczania negatywnych skutków niszczycielskich wiatrów, wskazując możliwe działania już na etapie projektowania obiektów budowlanych, np. przez odpowiednie kształtowanie architektoniczne (aerodynamiczne) i konstrukcyjne. Zalecono w szczególności korzystne kształtowanie bryły budynków (w szczególności dachów), wzmocnienia ścian murowanych elementami żelbetowymi oraz skuteczne mocowania do konstrukcji elementów wykończeniowych (termoizolacji, pokrycia dachowego i in.).

Increasingly, in Poland there is an unprecedented climatic impact resulting from the greenhouse effect and excessive carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. These phenomena cause significant material losses in the national economy, and may also pose a threat to human health and life. The paper discusses the genesis of climate change - the scope of the analysis was limited to the impact of hurricane winds and whirlwinds, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and building structures as well as destruction of tree stands in forest areas. The effects of these interactions were discussed, illustrating them with practical examples. The directions of preventing and limiting the negative effects of destructive winds are also presented, indicating possible actions at the stage of designing buildings, for example by appropriate architectural (aerodynamic) and structural shaping. In particular, the commissioned cost-effective shaping of the body of the building (in particular the roofs), reinforcement of brick walls with reinforced concrete elements and effective fixing of finishing elements to the structure (thermal insulation, roofing).
