Dynamically identifying key product changes is a challenge for enterprises. It is even more complicated if companies strive for the sustainable development of their activities. Therefore, the aim of the article was to develop a method to help predict the direction of product improvement, taking into account its quality level and environmental impact during the life cycle (LCA). The method was based on the design phase of LCA and the process of obtaining and processing customer expectations. Techniques supporting the developed method were: a questionnaire, a seven-point Likert scale, a standardised list of criteria for assessing the product life cycle, the WSM method, and a scale of relative states. The product analysis was carried out according to modified criteria states, which were evaluated according to: i) customer satisfaction (quality criteria), ii) environmental impact of LCA (environmental criteria), and iii) importance of quality and environmental criteria for customers. The originality of the method is to support the product improvement process to make it environmentally friendly within LCA and, at the same time, satisfactory to customers in terms of quality. The method will be used mainly by SMEs that want to initially predict the environmental impact of a product, including taking into account customer expectations.

Closed-loop economy initiatives in Europe are still at an early stage. Progress in its implementation in industrial sectors, however, requires clarifying the concept from the perspective of balancing aspects covering environmental, economic and social issues, which may support the transformation process. Green polymer materials made from (bio)degradable, renewable, or recycled raw materials can help prevent and partially reduce waste and contribute to more sustainable life cycles. Furthermore, such materials could have a lower carbon footprint and, in some cases, may exhibit more favourable material properties in many applications. The article is an attempt to show that a systematic, standardised approach to quantifying the potential impacts of a product or process that takes from resource extraction to the end of a product life, such as life cycle assessment, can be an effective methodology for implementing sustainability in the circular economy.

Full climate neutrality and decarbonization of the economy are key goals of the European Union by 2050. The construction sector is one of the most important elements on the way to achieving these goals, given that it accounts for 36% of greenhouse gas emissions linked to energy consumption. An effective tool for monitoring greenhouse gas emissions in the construction sector is the carbon footprint. The article analyzes the legal requirements for calculating the carbon footprint of buildings in countries that have specific regulations in this regard - Denmark, Finland, France, the Netherlands and Sweden.
This study analysed the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles’(FCEVs’) life cycles. These included models running on hydrogen derived from coke oven gas (COG), which is a by-product of the coking process of coal and includes hydrogen, methane, and other gases. FCEVs and hydrogen have the potential to drive future mobility. Hydrogen can be separated from the COG in the process of pressure swing adsorption to obtain a purity of hydrogen that meets the requirements of a hydrogen FCEV. An environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) of FCEV powered by hydrogen produced from Polish COG was conducted. The direction of hydrogen production strategies in Poland was also presented. The analyses included the entire life cycle of FCEVs with the production of hydrogen from COG in a Polish coke plant. A comparative analysis of FCEVs and other alternative fuels was conducted, and the main determinants of GHG emissions of FCEV were given. Importantly, this is the first attempt at an environmental assessment of FCEVs in Poland.

Environmental declarations of construction products are an increasingly rich, widely available source of data on their environmental characteristics. A strong impulse to issue them results from the need to confirm the status of environmentally sustainable investments or economic activities within the EU taxonomy and the need to determine the environmental performance of buildings. Considering the wide range of aspects of sustainable construction and the need to take into account a lot of data, there is still a need for further development of design algorithms. The use of BIM can significantly increase the possibilities of using e.g. data from declarations, especially in multi-criteria optimization and identification of sets of technical solutions ensuring the best functional properties of facilities, with the lowest environmental impact and the lowest total investment and operating costs.

The continuous price increase of energy raw material, as well as the growing requirements regarding the emission and energy consumption of buildings, force us to look for new solutions, starting from obtaining raw materials, producing (constructing), exploitation and consequently managing energy and raw materials in accordance with the assumptions of a circular and sustainable economy development. The goal of the study was a detailed analysis of the energy and environmental loads in the life cycle of an existing commercial building. This scientific analytical procedure was performed using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method. The results of the analysis show the dominant influence of the exploitation phase on the environment. Particularly in this area further measures should be taken to improve the energy efficiency and consequently the emissivity of buildings.
The use of fossil fuel sourced diesel underground has various associated health and environmental hazards, and additional energy demand and costs associated with necessary ventilation. One way to reduce these impacts is by utilizing a biodiesel-blend, which generates lower levels of harmful emissions from underground equipment and can be produced regionally, reducing the impact of transportation. Furthermore, this would help allow use of existing machinery during transition towards more widespread electrification underground. Therefore, the concept of an integrated supply and use chain within the mining industry is examined based on biodiesel from acidophilic photosynthetic microalgae cultivated using CO 2 in smelter off-gas. A life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to compare the environmental impacts of production, transportation, and end-use of fossil fuel sourced diesel to biodiesel-blended fuel across four underground metal ore mine sites (Canada, Poland, Zambia, and Australia). The outcomes from assessing four key environmental impact potentials (global warming, eutrophication, acidification and human toxicity) demonstrate the advantages of using biodiesel-blends. The integration of biodiesel resulted in changes of -22.5 to +22.8% (global warming), -6.1 to +27.3% (eutrophication), -18.9 to +26.3% (acidification), and -21.0 to -3.6% (human toxicity). The results showed reduction across all potentials for two mines and reduction in human toxicity potential for all sites.
The current study focuses on the life cycle assessment and an economic valuation of a natural convection solar greenhouse dryer in Western Maharashtra, India. The Solar Greenhouse Dryer is an active device that gains solar radiation incident on to the surface of the dryer and along with wind energy, it removes moisture from agricultural yield. The combination of solar Energy and wind energy removes moisture from agricultural yield. The Solar Greenhouse Dryer is primarily used in rural settings; hence, it is very important to analyse the environmental and economic aspects associated with the dryer to obtain the maximum benefit from the dryer with less investment possible. The experiment involving a natural convection solar dryer was conducted at Bahe, Borgaon, Tal-Walwa, Dist- Sangli, Maharashtra, India located at 17.115° N and 74.33° E. The environmental parameters taken into considerations during the analysis covered energy, Energy payback time and CO2 emissions, mitigation and carbon credits earned by the dryer. The economic analysis of the solar dryer consists of the annual cost of the dryer, the salvage value, the annual saving obtained and the payback period respectively. The embodied energy of the solar greenhouse dryer considering all the components of the dryer is 238.317 kWh, the energy payback time is 0.588 years and CO2 emissions are 24.327 kg per year, the carbon dioxide mitigation is 2.042 kg per kWh and the carbon credits earned by the dryer are nearly 28, 600. The annual cost of the dryer is Rs. 21, 600, the salvage value of the dryer is Rs. 7, 160, the annual savings obtained from the dryer are Rs. 1,62, 574 and the payback period is around 2 years respectively. The Solar Greenhouse Dryer is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution that can effectively be used in rural settings by farmers to prevent various post-harvest losses associated with the agricultural yield and to gain extra additional income from the dried products.

Sektor budowlany należy do gałęzi gospodarki o istotnym wpływie na środowisko. Wykorzystuje ogromne ilości zróżnicowanych surowców, wytwarza znaczne ilości odpadów i emituje znaczne ilości gazów cieplarnianych do atmosfery. Badania prowadzono w zakresie czterech wskaźników, tj. globalnego współczynnika ocieplenia [GWP], potencjału zakwaszenie gleby i wody [AP], potencjału eutrofizacji [EP] oraz potencjał tworzenia ozonu troposferycznego [POCP].

The construction sector is one of the branches of the economy with a significant impact on the environment. It uses a vast amount of different raw materials. Also, it produces substantial amounts of waste and emits high amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Reducing the energy consumption and emissivity of buildings, decarbonizing existing energy sources, optimizing the use of renewable energy, and minimizing the carbon footprint of materials and construction works are imperative to counteract climate change. It is also a minimum plan for ensuring sustainable social development. The current environmental policy in the construction sector is insufficient and it results from the legal regulations currently in force. Assessment of construction products for the seventh basic requirement, sustainable use of natural resources, is voluntary and almost always neglected. Assessment tools, such as Type III Environmental Product Declarations [EPDs] for construction products, are not widely used. Moreover, these documents are poorly recognizable among consumers, proving that there is still insufficient environmental awareness. In addition, the emerging differences in environmental impact indicators values specified in environmental declarations, resulting from using differentiated approaches in setting system boundaries or the quality of available generic data, do not support the proper development of knowledge about the impact of construction products on the environment. In this work, an analysis of the environmental impact of cement, which is a component of adhesives used in the External Thermal Insulation Composite System [ETICS], was carried out. The study on four indicators, i.e., global warming potential [GWP], soil and water acidification potential [AP], eutrophication potential [EP], and tropospheric ozone formation potential [POCP], was performed.
Ocena wbudowanego śladu węglowego i porównanie alternatywnych rozwiązań projektowych budynku były kluczowym celem badania. W pracy wskazano obszary projektu o największym potencjale redukcji śladu węglowego. Wnioski wyciągnięte z badania mogą posłużyć jako podstawa do opracowania wytycznych projektowych w celu zmniejszenia śladu węglowego przyszłych budynków.
