W artykule przedstawiono przemianę wzajemnych relacji architektury i muzyki, poprzez porównanie poglądów zawartych w traktatach i realizacjach architektów renesansu z przykładami architektury współczesnej. Zarówno architektura, jak i muzyka przypisywały sobie w historii zdolność do wcielania w życie idei harmonii w jej pitagorejskim, matematycznym ujęciu. Krzysztof Lipka, muzyk i historyk sztuki, w artykule poświęconym związkom architektury i muzyki niewątpliwe pokrewieństwo obu dziedzin widzi w ich osadzeniu w matematyce, w proporcjach, w harmonii, tyleż pojmowanej ogólnie, co utwierdzonej w żelaznych zasadach. Przedstawiona zasadnicza przemiana w postrzeganiu roli związków z muzyką w architektonicznej teorii i praktyce nie zawsze znajduje odzwierciedlenie w wyraźnym oderwaniu pojęcia harmonii architektonicznej od jej pierwotnie interpretowanych muzycznych konotacji (np. [5, s. 98-101], [31, s. 91]). Straciły one jednak swe podstawy teoretyczne, gdyż pojęcia Boecjusza nie znalazły uzasadnienia psychologicznego. Dlatego też trzeba dziś zgodzić się ze zdaniem, iż: Prawda jest taka, że wszelkie porównania proporcji architektonicznych z muzycznymi konsonansami można traktować jedynie metaforycznie.

The article examines a change in the relationship between architecture and music basing on Renaissance architectural treaties and examples of modern buildings. One thought that remains unaltered is that music is regarded as a source of inspiration for architecture and very rarely vice versa. What has changed is the loss of primary belief that proportion and number that warrant natural and irresistible harmony in the realm of sounds have the same powerful influence on an observer in the world of the visual. Modern examples of buildings inspired by music are detailed ..translations" of a chosen single piece of music into the language of architecture using arbitrarily set methods. The proper decoding of such translation may be a source of pleasure and harmony to an observer, as it reveals a certain order and reason behind otherwise casual arrangements. However, such pleasure is given only to those who know what the architect meant to ..translate" and also understand the language of music. Otherwise the perfection of the translation can not be fully admired.

Związki między architekturą a muzyką mają długą tradycję w kulturze europejskiej. Artykuł przedstawia ujęcie wspomnianej problematyki w nowej perspektywie i daje przyczynek do poszukiwań nowatorskich rozwiązań projektowych tłumaczących kompozycje muzyczne na formę przestrzenną. Takie ujęcie tematu może być cenne również dla innych sztuk, które dotykają problematyki wizualizacji muzyki.

The relation between music and architecture and the specific kind of parallel aesthetic have their long tradition in the European culture. This article gives a new perspective of this relationship and tries to approach this subject matter in order to show the merging tendencies of those two arts. Integration of both music and architecture verifies and extends traditional way of thinking, as well as methods and theories of design. Such new understanding of the music creates a possibility to discover a new way of design where the prime aspect and the factor of design is a visualization of sound.
