Człowiek w mieście jest nie tylko obserwatorem, ale także jego twórcą ściśle związanym z krajobrazem miejskim. Przestrzeń miasta to aktywny rodzaj galerii, która prezentuje treści istotne dla jego mieszkańców. Stąd też sztuka ulicy staje się coraz bardziej narzędziem umożliwiającym przekaz różnorodnych komunikatów. Przykładem takiego specyficznego narzędzia są murale – wielkoformatowe polichromie. Ich rola nie sprowadza się do funkcji dekoracyjnej. Zawsze jest to aktywny komentarz, recenzja czy ocena zdarzenia lub problemu społecznego zaszyfrowana w takiej lub innej formie artystycznego wyrazu. Odbiór danej pracy i interpretacja zawartego w niej przesłania stanowi wypadkową relacji między widzem, krajobrazem miejskim i muralem.

Man is not only an observer in a city, but also creates its closely related urban landscape. A city’s space is an active type of gallery, which presents contents important for its inhabitants. Thus, street art is more often becoming a tool making it possible to transmit diverse messages. An example of such a specific type of tool are murals, large-format polychromes. They do not simply play the role of a decorative function. Murals are always active commentaries, a review or evaluation of an event or social problem encoded in one way or another as an artistic expression. The reception of a given work and the interpretation of the message contained in it reveal an incidental relationship between the viewer, the urban landscape and the mural.

Murale na stałe wpisały się już w krajobraz wielu polskich miast. Część z nich nawiązuje do wartości i tradycji miasta, inne niosą przesłanie edukacyjne, informacyjne lub prospołeczne, a jeszcze inne pełnią funkcję reklamy. Dla jednych mieszkańców są po prostu brzydkie, a inni doceniają ich wartość artystyczną. A jak samorządy postrzegają te wielkoformatowe malowidła ścienne?

Współczesna przestrzeń miejska jest złożoną formacją elementów organicznych (ludzkich i przyrodniczych), miejskich i architektonicznych form oraz funkcji tworzących zeń jeden spójny system. Procesy humanizacji i dehumanizacji zachodzą w przestrzeni miejskiej jednocześnie, przekształcając ją w pole walki przeciwstawnych elementów: starego i nowego, tradycyjnego i nowoczesnego, piękna i użyteczności, tego, co organiczne i co sztuczne, spontaniczne i zorganizowane, wreszcie ludzkie a mechaniczne. Autorzy starają się zilustrować wspomniane zjawisko na przykładzie Wrocławia, nowoczesnego miasta w południowo-zachodniej Polsce, stawiając pytania o miejsce człowieka i jego potrzeb w technokratycznej, skomercjalizowanej przestrzeni.

Contemporary urban space is a multidimensional formation of organic elements (human and nature), still urban and architectural forms and function connected them together in one coherent system. Processes of humanization and dehumanization happen simultaneously in it and transform it in a battlefield for opposite elements: new and old, traditional and modern, useful and beautiful, organic and artificial, spontaneous and organized, finally - human and mechanical. Authors try to illustrate this phenomenon on a case of Wrocław, the metropolitan city in the south-western Poland, asking about human place and its needs in technocratic, commercial space.

Called "the cover of poverty" or "anti-decoration" by some and "artistic decoration" by others, murals have been inscribed in the landscape of almost all huge urban agglomerations of both Americas and Western Europe. The period of most dynamic development of various forms and techniques of murals occurred in the 1970s and 1980s. The fact that they can fulfill many substantial functions, such as informational, commercial, educational or become expressions of rebellion or identification of the inhabitants with the city, add to their impetuous development. Because of their scale, colour, symbolic and in many cases also artistic values, murals become distinctive landmarks in urban landscape. The article presents in an outline some aspects concerning context, form and function of modern murals.

The paper draws an outline of the phenomenon of the Mural Movement in California (US). grunted experiences of Mexican mural and a giant mural program run in the 1930s on the 20th century within limits of New deal plan had big influence on its development. Murals themes often touches social issues, but also ranges to landscapes, fauna and flora themes, image of illusions of elevation decorations and widely considered history of the place. Portraits and group scenes, symbols of popular culture, loosely composed quotations from historical painting appear there. Various artistic currents such as: realism, op-art, hyperrealism, expressionism, cubism pop-art geometrical abstractionism and graffiti motives have their reflection in mural art. For many murals the leading motive is an element of humour and graphical humour. Murals are inseparable element of a landscape of Californian cities - both huge agglomerations and provincial settlements. Many places promote their mural as touristic attraction. the fact that many murals, especially those which are commonly acknowledged, is regularly restored and renewed proves that statement.
