In the article, the authors describe the potential of using virtual reality systems in the aspect of increasing information superiority on the modern battlefield. The purpose of the article is to identify virtual reality systems as a tool to support this process. At the beginning, the authors present the genesis of virtual environments and they make a critical analysis of several virtual reality simulators, which have been the subject of scientific research in the last few years. In this way, the authors emphasise the dynamic development of the ICT sector and the possibility of using its technical innovations to support military operations. Next, the authors discuss data processing, which was correlated with the cycle of strategic thinking. Presentation of the hierarchy of information in information systems was the result of these analyses. In addition, the authors refer to the implementation of the communication process in the context of maximising the information superiority. They point to the relationship between the process of designing interactive virtual reality systems and communication theory. Finally, they highlight the advantages and disadvantages of virtual reality simulators in the context of increasing information superiority on the modern battlefield.

The paper presents an overview of the main threats for soldiers' sight in the modern battlefield. Such a problem is crucial for the proper action of pilots, drivers, and weapon operators. Even temporary lack of sight can be very dangerous in action. Amongst different possible threats two are of a special importance: lasers and nuclear blasts, however, special kinds of conventional blasts can be also dangerous. Possible means of eye protection are discussed with the special attention paid to prospective materials. The intelligent light valves based on liquid crystals are concerned as the best solution for contemporary air and land platforms as well as individual soldiers.

W artykule przedstawiono przegląd głównych zagrożeń dla wzroku żołnierza na współczesnym polu walki. Ten problem ma zasadnicze znaczenie dla właściwego działania pilotów, kierowców-mechaników i operatorów uzbrojenia. Nawet chwilowa utrata wzroku może być niebezpieczna podczas działań bojowych. Spośród różnych możliwych zagrożeń dwa są szczególnie niebezpieczne: lasery i wybuchy jądrowe, a także wybuchy ładunków konwencjonalnych specjalnego rodzaju. Omówiono możliwe środki ochrony wzroku szczególną uwagę poświęcając perspektywicznym materiałom. Za najlepsze rozwiązanie dla współczesnych platform powietrznych i lądowych, jak również pojedynczego żołnierza uznano inteligentne zawory optyczne wykorzystujące ciekłe kryształy.

This article presents the results of researches in the field of electronic destruction in contemporary operations. It has been proved that electronic destruction is becoming an important part of contemporary operations, especially in net-centric warfare and as such it has to be taken into consideration as an activity of both enemy and own armed forces. Hence, the position and role of electronic destruction in net-centric warfare has been defined and its division has been presented. As a result, the range of individual components, i.e. interference, electronic deception and neutralization were discussed. It was defined that actions taken within the confines of individual components of electronic destruction consist in disorganization of surveillance, communications and armament guiding equipment during the time essential for undertaking fire strikes on different enemy objects or in the permanent destruction of these objects by electromagnetic energy of high density power, comparable to the energy of electromagnetic impulse accompanying nuclear explosion. The author highly values the results of researches concerning future ways of electronic destruction, which destroy elements of electronic systems and disorganize information and information-managing processes, essential for commanding the armed forces and guiding the armament.

Udział wojsk amerykańskich w drugiej wojnie w Zatoce Perskiej w 2003 roku zrewolucjonizował dotychczasowy sposób prowadzenia działań bojowych. W wojnie tej zastosowano nowe, dotychczas nie spotykane rozwiązania techniczne, które użyto w poszczególnych elementach walki. Artykuł przybliża Czytelnikowi istotę tych rozwiązań i pokazuje, jak mogą one wpłynąć na sposób prowadzenia konfliktów zbrojnych w przyszłości.

Combat environment has always significantly influenced combat operations preparation and course. Faster and faster changes that undergo at contemporary battlefield, its air - land dimension and operations’ dynamics cause the necessity of constant revaluations and precise analysis of all battlefield environment elements. This, not decreasing, role of battlefield environment, despite continuous growth of manoeuvre potentials of modern combat equipment, transferring operations into the third dimension raises the necessity of new developments and solutions. Transformations taking place now that result mainly from the progress in electronics, which is ubiquitous, let us think that in the 21st century various land forces systems will be integrated in one system, which, in turn, will be a part of integrated land, air and naval forces’ network, and in the near future will include space forces as well. This integration is expected to improve operations’ precision on a battlefield. In consequence, also all environment elements will require broad, precise, and what is most important fast, evaluation what is difficult to imagine without using systems conducting these tasks automatically.

The development of military technology, constant ordinance improvement, fast pace and manoeuvre of modem military actions have increased the need for various combat and materials agents and thus complicated the process of materials provision for fighting troops. It results from the analysis and evaluation of changes occurring in the theory of fighting that conditions that can be divided into tactical, logistic, terrain and atmospheric ones are the most important factors determining the materials supplies’ process. These conditions involve many problems, facing of which on modern battlefield requires system solutions. These solutions include, among others, assuring adequacy of tasks conducted by materials supply unit with material and transport potential, optimal planning methods and procedures, organising and carrying out tasks relating to combat and material agents supplies, rendering social and housing services, rational use of material terrain infrastructure during the process of conducting services and supplies for subunits in combat. These problems should be solved by working out new and more efficient developments or by adopting solutions that have already been developed in leading NATO countries. Contemporary battlefield requires from the commanders not only to make decisions fast but effective planning and organising endeavours supporting theses decisions. One of the most important endeavours, due to the significance of the problem, is to provide efficient supplies for the fighting troops. It calls for fulfilling a basic condition, so called 4xW, i.e. the supplies must be carried out in a proper time, amount, quality and addressee.
