Obecnie wiele mówi się o ochronie środowiska, zrównoważonym rozwoju, szczególnie jeśli dotyczy to działalności firm przemysłowych czy wydobywczych. Takie działania powinny być na stałe wpisane w DNA przedsiębiorstw, które korzystają z dobrodziejstw natury. W przypadku działalności wydobywczej jest to szczególnie istotne. Jak więc w praktyce podejść do racjonalnego gospodarowania złożem, aby jak najmniej oddziaływać na środowisko?

Rare earth elements (REE) have turned from an inconspicuous group of raw materials to critical commodities in the last decade. The insatiable and continuously growing demand for rare earths combined with their small and opaque market has resulted in a global exploration boom that has led to the delineation of extensive resources on every continent. Nevertheless, the special boundary conditions that govern the REE industry require second thoughts and careful evaluations when it comes to the potential exploitation of such resources. Past mistakes, with respect to environmental impacts and uncertain investments, have resulted in an overall uncertainty whether the mining and beneficiation of rare earth elements can be a viable industry in a free market context. This paper attempts to record the erroneous practices of the past and use them as guidelines to strengthen the global REE supply-chain. Moreover, the paper focuses on the assessments that need to be made in order to optimize the mining process and reinforce the growth prospects of the market. An overall assessment tool for the mineability of rare earth deposits is also used to consolidate these evaluations and answer the question, if REE mining can be sustainable.

W artykule przedstawiono budowę geologiczną Złoża Węgla Brunatnego "Bełchatów" w rejonie rowu II rzędu wraz z uwarunkowaniami geologiczno-inżynierskimi urabiania tego fragmentu złoża. Chronologicznie przedstawiono historię prac projektowych zmierzających do racjonalnego wykorzystania zasobów. Przyjętą do realizacji koncepcję opisano, wskazując na uwarunkowania geologiczne i technologiczne prowadzenia robót górniczych eksploatacji i zwałowania we wschodniej części rowu II rzędu. Przyjęte rozwiązanie projektowe eksploatacji węgla do rzędnej - 110 m n.p.m. mogą być w trakcie trwania eksploatacji modyfikowane w zależności od bieżącej sytuacji geologiczno-inżynierskiej. Stopień realizacji zaprojektowanych prac będzie można ocenić po 2016 roku, kiedy to zakończone zostaną roboty górnicze w tej części złoża.

The paper presents the geological structure of the "Bełchatów" Lignite Deposit in the region of the II-order graben, including the geological and engineering conditions of mining this fragment of the deposit. The history of the project works aiming at rational using of the resources has been presented in chronological order. The author has described the approved realization concept indicating the geological and technological conditions of performing the works of exploitation and tipping in the Eastern part of the II-order graben. The approved project of lignite exploitation up to the ordinate of - 110 m above sea level might be modified during the exploitation according to the current geological and engineering conditions. The stage of performance of the projected works might be assessed after the year 2016, by which the mining works in this part of the deposit will have been finished.
