This work demonstrates that the combined addition of Al10Sr and Al5TiB master alloys to the AlMg5Si2Mn effectively refines the grain microstructure and partially modifies the eutectic Mg2Si phase. Thorough spectroscopic characterization reveals that the grain refinement effect is due to Al3Ti particles acting as nucleation sites for α-Al grains, and the increased nucleation temperature of α-Al is due to Al10Sr addition. It is also determined that TiB2 particles can act as nucleation substrates for the primary Mg2Si phase. The prepared alloy sample with the finest microstructure (treated with both Al10Sr and Al5TiB) exhibits the greatest corrosion resistance among all tested samples.
The results of studies presented in this article are an example of the research activity of the authors related to lead-free alloys. The studies covered binary SnZn90 and SnZn95 lead-free alloys, including their microstructure and complex mechanical characteristics. The microstructure was examined by both light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The identification of alloy chemical composition in micro-areas was performed by SEM/EDS method. As regards light microscopy, the assessment was of both qualitative and quantitative character. The determination of the geometrical parameters of microstructure was based on an original combinatorial method using phase quantum theory. Comprehensive characterization of mechanical behavior with a focus on fatigue life of alloys was performed by means of the original modified low cycle fatigue method (MLCF) adapted to the actually available test machine. The article discusses the fatigue life of binary SnZn90 and SnZn95 alloys in terms of their microstructure. Additionally, the benefits resulting from the use of the combinatorial method in microstructure examinations and MLCF test in the quick estimation of several mechanical parameters have been underlined.
The paper presents the results of investigation into the technological possibility of making light-section castings of GX2CrNiMoN25-6-3 cast steel. Due the fact that the GX2CrNiMoN25-6-3 duplex cast steel has a complex microstructure authors of this paper took on its analysis. For making castings with a wall thickness in the thinnest place as small as below 1 mm, the centrifugal casting technology, as it was presented in the paper [1], is one of the most effective technology. In the paper was made the analysis of four different parameters of the casting process and different parameters of heat treatment.
Publikacja dotyczy zabiegu modyfikowania podwójnych stopów Zn o średniej zawartości aluminium dodatkiem zaprawy zawierającej tytan i obejmuje badania wpływu zabiegu modyfikowania na stopień rozdrobnienia mikrostruktury stopu Zn-10% mas. The paper deals with grain-refinement of the sand-cast binary medium-aluminium Zn-10 mas. % alloy (ZnAl10) by using the Zn-3.2 mas. %Ti master alloy. Basing on the structure analysis it was stated that the master alloy causes significant grain-refinement in comparison with the initial, no modified alloy. Thermal analysis of the cooling curves stated that the modified alloys had increased nucleation temperatures and, at the same time, decreased recalescence – which proves nucleating action of the Zn-3.2 mas. %Ti master alloy in the examined alloy.

This paper investigated the influence of cooling rate on the number of primary grains α(Al) in Al-5Cu alloy. The study was conducted on castings with wall thickness in the range of 3-25 mm. In order to determine cooling rate and maximum undercooling at the beginning of the solidification the cooling curves were recorded. Research has shown that the cooling rate increases exponentially with decreasing wall thickness of the casting. Moreover it has been shown that the cooling rate of castings varies widely (21.5-1.6 °C / s) when changing the wall thickness from 3 up to 25 mm. Metallographic studies were performed to determine the primary grain density (the number of grains of primary α(Al) per unit volume). The relationship combining the number of primary grains with the cooling rate and maximum undercooling (ΔTm=Te-Tmin, where Te - equilibrium solidification temperature (liquidus), Tmin - minimum temperature at the beginning of the solidification of α(Al) phase). Research has also shown that the number of primary grains can be described with a high correlation coefficient by the power function of the cooling rate.
In recent years, improvement of casting magnesium alloys welding technology has resulted in an increase in the number of publications on this topic. The symptom of this trend is to replace traditional construction materials of magnesium alloys. Magnesium alloys of Mg-Zn-RE-Zr group are used in the automotive, aerospace and defense industries, mainly as gravitional casts to sand moulds or die-casting. Casting defects often appear in these casts (misruns, micro-shrinkage, cracks). The welding technologies are most often applicable to repair of casts, mainly nonconsumable electrode welding in the inert gas cover. The premise of this research work was to define structure and mechanical properties of welded joints of magnesium alloy EZ33A-T5. For this purpose, were attempted trails welding and conducted non-destructive testing, metallographic and strength mechanical tests allowing to assess the properties of welded joints. Evaluation of properties of welded joints was possible by carrying out welding trials and execution of non-destructive tests and metallographic. Research of the microstructure was used with the methodology and test procedures for the quantitative evaluation of the structure of welded joints which was developed in the Department of Materials Science of Silesian University of Technology.
Microstructure of conventionally cast and melt spun Al91Mn7Fe2 alloy was examined by X-ray diffraction, SEM and TEM techniques. Three different phases were found in a mould cast ingot: Al6(Mn, Fe), Al4(Mn, Fe) and aluminium solid solution. Rapidly quenched ribbons cast using melt spinning technique with different speed values of rotating wheel: 25, 30 and 36 m/s had average width in a range of 30-50 µ. It was found that ribbons contain quasicrystalline particles with different sizes and shapes including large dendrites in a range of micrometers and smaller spherical particles below 1 µ embedded in an aluminium matrix. Composition of these particles was similar to the Al4(Mn, Fe) phase. Also quasicrystals in the form of eutectic were observed with slightly different composition close to the Al6(Mn, Fe) phase. All observed particles revealed 2, 3 and 5- fold symmetry, typical for icosahedral quasicrystals. Increase in microhardness up to 274 HV for melt spun ribbon comparing to 141 HV for the as-cast ingot was observed due to a change in phase composition and refinement of the phases. Thermal stability of quasicrystalline phase in the ribbon was examined by annealing in different temperatures. Temperatures for thermal treatment were chosen based on DSC curve which contains the exothermic peak in the temperature range 300-500degrees Celsius. Analysis of ribbons annealed for 30 minutes at 400degrees Celsius showed that transformation of quasicrystals to stable crystalline phase starts at quasicrystal/Al-matrix interfaces. After annealing for 4 hours at 500degrees Celsius only the Al6(Mn, Fe) phase and aluminium solid solution were observed in the ribbon microstructure.

As-cast Mg-5Al-0.4Mn-xRE (x = 0, 1, 2 wt.%) magnesium alloys were prepared successfully and influence of rare earth (RE) elements on the microstructure has been investigated by light microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results revealed that the as-cast Mg-5Al-0.4Mn alloy consist of α - Mg matrix and eutectic α + γ (where γ is Mg17Al12). With the addition of rare earth elements Al11RE3 precipitates were formed. The amount of the Al11RE3 precipitates increased with increasing addition of RE, but the amount of γ - Mg17Al12 decreased. Additionally, in alloys with rare earth elements no aluminium-manganese precipitates were observed, instead of that ternary intermetallic compound Al10RE2Mn7 was formed.

The effect of hot forging temperature on microstructure of FeAl-based alloy with chemical constitution of Fe-36Al-0.2Mo-0.05Zr-0.1C-0.02B (at. %) was characterised in this paper. The forging tests of ingots made from this alloy confirmed their deformability at a temperature of 800°C and higher, with a single draft of 80%. It was demonstrated that the deformation process was proceeding irregularly, which resulted in microstructure heterogeneity at the forging height as the zones with different recrystallisation degrees and different grain sizes. It was found that the finest grain occurred in the external zone of the forging, the intermediate - at XA of its height, while the biggest was at Vi of the forging height. The greatest microstructure recrystallisation degree was found in the external zone of the forging, while the smallest - at Vi of its height. The extremely recrystallised and refined microstructure was obtained upon forging at 800°C. Forging at higher temperature makes the microstructure recrystallisation degree in individual forging zones decrease successively and the average grain diameter increase.

2-6). Stwierdzono, że najdrobniejsze ziarno występuje w strefie zewnętrznej odkuwki, pośrednie w % jej wysokości, największe w i wysokości odkuwki (rys. 7). Największy stopień rekrystalizacji mikrostruktury stwierdzono w strefie zewnętrznej odkuwki, najmniejszy w Vi jej wysokości. W największym stopniu zrekrystaUzowaną i rozdrobnioną mikrostrukturę otrzymano po kuciu w temperaturze 800°C. Kucie w wyższej temperaturze sprawia, że stopień rekrystalizacji mikrostruktury w poszczególnych strefach odkuwki sukcesywnie maleje a średnia średnica ziarna wzrasta (rys. 8).

In the metal casting industry, an improvement of component quality depends mainly on better control over the production parameters. In order to gain a better understanding of how to control the as-cast microstructure, it is important to understand the evaluation of microstructure during solidification and understanding how influence the changes of chemical concentration on this microstructure. In this research, the effect of Cu content on the microstructure and solidification parameters of Al-Si-Cu alloys has been investigated. Thus, the thermal analysis of the alloys is used to control of aluminum casting process. The effect of different Cu content on solidification parameters such: aluminum dendrites nucleation temperature (TLiq, Liquidus temperature), á+â eutectic nucleation temperature (TE(Al+Si)N), Cu-rich eutectic nucleation temperature (TAl+Cu), solidus temperature (Tsol), solidification range (ÄTs) has been studied in liquidus region. Influence of Cu content on the microstructure has been carried out. The principle observation made from this work ware that as copper concentration is increased the liquidus and solodius temperature decried. In addition to this it was observed that increase a Cu content from 1 to 4 wt % caused reduce of the secondary dendrite arm spacing and increase the grain size.

Results of the influence of the cooling rate during crystallization on the geometrical parameters of AlSi5Cu1 alloy microstructure were introduced in the paper. Changeable technological casting conditions, including different cooling rates of crystallization (by either modifications of the casting size and method of its cooling) and heat treatment (T6) were applied. Four varieties of the as-cast alloy microstructure with diversified morphology of the eutectic silicon crystals were obtained. The values of basie geometrical parameters of microstructure - grain size, secondary dendrite arms spacing, eutectic silicon crystals size and its volume fraction for each form of the microstructure were determined. Large quantity of findings made possible to use the statistical methods for dates handling. It was found that along with the growth of cooling rate the geometrical parameters of the microstructure get smaller. These changes, which were described by an exponential dependence with large correlation coefficient (r = 0.99), proceed in non-uniform way - the cooling rate affects to the highest degree on grains size, in a lesser - on the secondary dendrite arms spacing and in the slightest degree on eutectic silicon crystals size. It follows that by increasing the cooling rate during crystallization of AlSi5Cu1 alloy it is possible to enlarge of its microstructure homogeneity and in these connection improve to a large extent utilitarian properties of castings, especially large, complicated shapes and diversified sections for heavily loaded elements of machine.

Dzięki temu, poprzez zwiększanie prędkości krystalizacji stopu AlSi5Cu1, można zwiększyć jednorodność jego mikrostruktury poprawiając w znacznym stopniu właściwości użytkowe odlewów, zwłaszcza o dużych rozmiarach, skomplikowanych kształtach i zróżnicowanych przekrojach.
