The analysis of time changes and relations between meteorological parameters (temperature, precipitation, cloudy, wind speed) and air pollution (nitrogen oxides, tropospheric ozone, particulate matter PM10 and PM 2.5) in Poznań in 2012-2022. With the aid of ARIMA model the prediction of air pollution level until 2025 has also been performed. The time changes and relations between meteorological parameters and air pollution in 2012-2022 in Poznań have been found. Special attention has been paid to the seasonality of elevated air pollutants concentrations and some tendencies in time periods. The seasonality is mainly related to the seasons of the year and air pollution sources dominant for certain seasons (e.g. transportation, house heating systems). While the longer time period tendencies are in relation in such activities as limitation resulted from COVID-19 pandemic situation and activities conducted by local governments and individual household to reduce air pollution emissions. This indicates the purposefulness of efforts made by society and local governments to reduce air pollution emissions in our immediate surroundings.
The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of air pollution and meteorological conditions on visibility in Zakopane, the most popular tourist destination in southern Poland. To achieve this objective, correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis and random forests were used. In addition, an analysis was performed of the occurrence of episodes of elevated pollutant concentrations and basic statistical characteristics of visibility, meteorological conditions and air pollution. Meteorological parameters (air temperature, relative humidity, total precipitation, wind speed, atmospheric pressure and visibility) and concentrations of air pollutants; particulate matter (PM₁₀) and gaseous pollutants (SO₂, NO₂) were recorded from 2010 to 2019. The data came from a monitoring station located in Zakopane-MpZakopaSien. It was found that high concentrations of air pollutants SO₂ and PM₁₀, along with relative humidity (RH), were the most important parameters affecting visibility limitation in Zakopane. Concentrations and indirectly also visibility were largely influenced by increased automobile traffic due to tourist activity, as well as emissions from apartment/building heating (combustion of various fuels). Understanding the relationship between air pollutant concentrations, meteorological conditions and visibility is a prerequisite and the basis for the scientific formulation of air pollution prevention and control policies in places where monitoring is particularly important.

Parametry meteorologiczne (temperatura powietrza, wilgotność względna, suma opadów, prędkość wiatru, ciśnienie atmosferyczne i widzialność) oraz stężenia zanieczyszczeń powietrza; pyłu zawieszonego (PM₁₀) i zanieczyszczeń gazowych (SO₂, NO₂) rejestrowano od 2010 do 2019 r.
Over the past two decades, artificial neural networks (ANN) have exhibited a significant progress in predicting and modeling non-linear hydrological applications, such as the rainfall-runoff process which can provide useful contribution to water resources planning and management. This research aims to test the practicability of using ANNs with various input configurations to model the rainfall-runoff relationship in the Seybouse basin located in a semi-arid region in Algeria. Initially, the ANNs were developed for six sub-basins, and then for the complete watershed, considering four different input configurations. The 1st (ANN IP) considers only precipitation as an input variable for the daily flow simulation. The 2nd (ANN II) considers the 2nd variable in the model input with precipitation; it is one of the meteorological parameters (evapotranspiration, temperature, humidity, or wind speed). The third (ANN IIIP,T,HUM) considers a combination of temperature, humidity, and precipitation. The last (ANN VP,ET,T,HUM,Vw) consists in collating different meteorological parameters with precipitation as an input variable. ANN models are made for the whole basin with the same configurations as specified above. Better flow simulations were provided by (ANN IIP,T) and (ANN IIP,Vw) for the two stations of Medjez-Amar II and Bordj-Sabath, respectively. However, the (ANN VP,ET,T,HUM,Vw)’s application for the other stations and also for the entire basin reflects a strategy for the flow simulation and shows enhancement in the prediction accuracy over the other models studied. This has shown and confirmed that the more input variables, as more efficient the ANN model is.
MIKE SHE software was used to estimate recharge into the aquifers of Ogun and Oshun Basins. Abeokuta within the Ogun Basin and Oshogbo in the Oshun Basin are sub-divided vertically into two components: atmosphere, and unsaturated zone. The atmosphere zone comprises of rainfall and potential evapotranspiration, while the unsaturated zones, comprises of the Basement Complex and Sedimentary rock. Daily records from two rainfall stations, Oshogbo station (2008–2011) and Abeokuta station (2010–2014) water years were obtained for simulation of groundwater recharge processes using MIKE SHE model. The simulation results showed that daily groundwater recharge is influenced by rainfall and ranges from 0 mm∙day–1 in January when there was an insufficient rainfall in the two stations to 10.89 mm∙day–1 in Abeokuta and 29.85 mm∙day–1 in Oshogbo in the month of August when the soils had attained field capacity. The study found out that there are more daily groundwater recharge in Oshun basin compared to that of Ogun basin. This was alluded to more rain-fall and less evapotranspiration recorded at Oshun basin as compared to Ogun basin coupled with the sedimentary soil which allows more movement of water into the aquifer of the basin. It is recommended MIKE SHE model should be used to estimate recharge in other basins in Nigeria and Africa for quick and effective daily recharge calculations to permit better and scientific decision making in these areas.

The paper presents results of the measurements of the tropospheric ozone (O3) concentration and meteorological parameters: temperature, air pressure, relative humidity, speed and wind direction. The data were collected from January 2016 to December 2016 at station located in locality Centre (Banja Luka), Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Ozone is one of the most harmful pollutants to plants and health and highly reactive secondary pollutant. The present study covers investigation of the relationship between the concentration of ozone and meteorological parameters as well as time variations of ozone concentration (by hours, months, seasons). This topic has not been studied up to now in this region, although the recent research data indicates that there is a correlation between them and previously obtained from the world’s relevant scientific centres, as already cited above. Statistical analysis confirms string of rolls, which shows directional connection between tropospheric ozone and meteorological parameters, specially temperature (r = 0.148), air pressure (r = –0.292) and relative humidity (r = –0.292). These parameters are the most important meteorological factors influencing the variation in ozone levels during the research. The correlation ozone concentrations with speed and direction of wind is not significant, like other parameters.
This paper presents research results on the determination of meteorological parameters utilising the GPS satellite technique. The meteorological parameters were designated using Standard Atmosphere (SA) and UNB3m empirical models. The research experiment was realised during a flight test at the Dęblin military aerodrome. In the flight test, the Cessna 172 plane was used. The values of meteorological parameters (for example, temperature, pressure and relative humidity) from the troposphere empirical models were presented and compared in the paper. In addition, the values of the meteorological parameters were estimated at flight attitude. The range of the flight attitude was between 150 and 700 m. The precision position of the aircraft in vertical frame was determinated using the RTK-OTF differential technique. The mean difference of temperature between the SA and UNB3m models is equal to -5.7°C with the RMS bias approximately 0.2°C. The mean difference of pressure between the SA and UNB3m models equals -1.0 hPa with the RMS bias of approximately 0.3 hPa. The mean difference of relative humidity between the SA and UNB3m models equals 25.5%, with the RMS bias approximately 0.6%. On paper, the values of meteorological data from the SA and UNB3m models were compared with true results interpolated from SYNOP message. In research, the three SYNOP stations, that is, Kozienice, Deblin/Irena and Lublin Radawiec were used for interpolation of the real meteorological data. The difference between empirical and interpolated meteorological data were presented in this paper. The accuracy of the designation of temperature is better in the SA model rather than the UNB3m model. The accuracy of the designation of pressure was relatively low in both models, SA and UNB3m. On the other hand, the accuracy of the designation of relative humidity was better in the UNB3m model than the SA model.
Prognozowanie zużycia wody jest niezbędnym elementem racjonalnej eksploatacji systemów wodociągowych. W ostatnich latach obserwuje się wzrost zainteresowania numerycznymi metodami do predykcji zużycia wody WDF (ang. Water Demand Forecasting), pozwalającymi sporządzać prognozy krótko-, średnio- i długoterminowe. Opracowane prognozy służą do wspomagania podejmowania decyzji związanych z projektowaniem, rozbudową, konserwacją sieci wodociągowych oraz wdrażania procedur umożliwiających optymalizację pracy pompowni, stacji uzdatniania wód i oczyszczalni ścieków. W artykule opisano zastosowanie metod inteligencji obliczeniowej i uczenia maszynowego do prognozowania wielkości zapotrzebowania na wodę. Przedstawiono wyniki prognozy wykonanej przy użyciu regresji nieliniowej, opartej na wektorach wsparcia SVR (ang. Support Vector Regression) z funkcjami jądrowymi określonymi przez radialne funkcje bazowe RBF (ang. Radial Basis Functions).

Predicting water consumption is an important issue at the stage of water systems operation. In recent years, some numerical WDF (Water Demand Forecasting) water consumption prediction systems have been created, which allow to foresee consumption rates for short, medium and long terms. The forecasts support decision-making process concerning the design, expansion and maintenance of water systems and the implementation of procedures optimizing the operation of pumping stations, water treatment and sewage treatment plants. The article describes the use of computational intelligence and machine learning to predict water demand rates. The results of a forecast prepared with the use of nonlinear regression based on Support Vector Regression (SVR) with kernel functions defined by Radial Basis Functions (RBF) are presented. The influence of weather situation on water consumption rates for two District Metered Areas (DMA) in Wrocław, each with different land development conditions, was analysed. It was proved that it is advisable to take the maximum daily temperature into account while estimating water demand rates. It was shown that skipping trends and seasonality in measuring data allows to create better prediction models. The water consumption prediction model presented may be regarded as one of the tools facilitating decision-making processes at management and water system utilisation levels.
Ocean wave energy is known as a renewable energy resource with high power potential and without negative environmental impacts. Wave energy has a direct relationship with the ocean’s meteorological parameters. The aim of the current study is to investigate the dependency between ocean wave energy flux and meteorological parameters by using data mining methods (DMMs). For this purpose, a feed-forward neural network (FFNN), a cascade-forward neural network (CFNN), and gene expression programming (GEP) are implemented as different DMMs. The modeling is based on historical meteorological and wave data taken from the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC). In all models, wind speed, air temperature, and sea temperature are input parameters. In addition, the output is the wave energy flux which is obtained from the classical wave energy flux equation. It is notable that, initially, outliers in the data sets were removed by the local distribution based outlier detector (LDBOD) method to obtain the best and most accurate results. To evaluate the performance and accuracy of the proposed models, two statistical measures, root mean square error (RMSE) and regression coefficient (R), were used. From the results obtained, it was found that, in general, the FFNN and CFNN models gave a more accurate prediction of wave energy from meteorological parameters in the absence of wave records than the GEP method.

This article describes the trials of providing the power and energy balancing of the studied area, during which a series of simulations concerning the cooperation of the RES, employing a different number of these sources, has been performed. Two options have been considered in the simulations. The first one contains the possibility of the cooperation between the studied area and a Commercial Operator in order to sell a surplus of produced electricity as well as its purchase in the hours of energy deficit. In the second option, all of the surplus of the produced power was stored in an energy storage and used during the scarcity of generated power. Simulated, hourly data of RES electric energy generation were determined on basis of meteorological conditions.
The paper presents the possibility of using statistical methods to automate the selection of explanatory variables to balance the daily load of the National Power System (NPS). With automation, the cost of input forecast purchase may be optimized by minimizing their number, and the results also allow for a reduction in the effort required to select input parameters (explanatory variables) for later forecasting of NPS daily loads.

The paper discusses the role of wind speed and mixing-layer height in shaping the levels of pollutant concentrations in the air of Krakow (Southern Poland). The hourly averaged measurements of concentrations of selected air pollutants and wind speed values from the period of 2014-2015, recorded at two of the air quality monitoring stations within Krakow (both industrial and urban background) were used for this purpose. Temporal variability of mixing-layer height in the area of the monitoring stations was determined using numerical modelling with the CALMET model and the measurements derived from, i.a., two upper air stations. It was found that wind speed and mixing-layer height are in at least moderate agreement with the concentration values for some pollutants. For PM10, PM2.5, NO2, NOx, CO and C6H6 correlation coefficient is of negative value, which indicates that the low wind speed and low mixing-layer height may be the dominant reason for elevated concentrations of these substances in the air, especially in the winter months. Moderate but positive correlation was found between O3 concentrations and analysed meteorological parameters, proving that the availability of appropriate precursors and their inflow from the neighbouring areas have an important role in the formation of tropospheric ozone. On the other hand, in case of SO2, a weak both positive and negative correlation coefficient was obtained, depending on the period and location of the station concerned.

W pracy omówiono rolę, jaką pełni prędkość wiatru i wysokość warstwy mieszania w kształtowaniu poziomów stężeń zanieczyszczeń w powietrzu w Krakowie (Południowa Polska). Czasową zmienność wysokości warstwy mieszania w rejonie danej stacji monitoringowej wyznaczono metodą modelowania z wykorzystaniem modelu CALMET i wyników pomiarów pochodzących m.in. z dwóch stacji aerologicznych.
The paper presents the evaluation of the relation between meteorological elements and air pollutants’ concentrations. The analysis includes daily concentrations of pollutants and variation of meteorological elements such as wind speed, air temperature and relative humidity, precipitation and total radiation at four monitoring stations located in the province of Lower Silesia in individual months of the winter half-year (November–April, according to hydrological year classification) of 2005–2009. Data on air quality and meteorological elements came from the results of research conducted in the automatic net of air pollution monitoring conducted in the range of the State Environment Monitoring. The effect of meteorological elements on analysed pollutant concentration was determined using the correlation and regression analysis at significance level α < 0.05. The occurrence of maximum concentration of NO, NO2, NOX, SO2 and PM10 occurred in the coldest months during winter season (January, February and December) confirmed the strong influence of “low emission” on air quality. Among the meteorological factors assessed wind speed was most often selected component in step wise regression procedure, then air temperature, less air relative humidity and solar radiation. In the case of a larger number of variables describing the pollution in the atmosphere, in all analyzed winter seasons the most common set of meteorological elements were wind speed and air temperature.

W przypadku występowania większej ilości zmiennych opisujących zanieczyszczenia w atmosferze, we wszystkich analizowanych półroczach zimowych najczęściej występującym układem elementów meteorologicznych była prędkość wiatru i temperatura powietrza.

The requirement for information concerning air quality with special attention to CO2 concentration is increasing in different fields of research. Satellite observations could provide information on gases which for special areas could be provided with high temporal resolution. One of the sources of measurements of CO2 was the SCIAMACHY.ENVISAT-1 (the SCanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric CHartographY) sensor. The study that has been introduced as part of the National Project (1600/B/T02/2011/40) of the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography: "Application of new generation satellite data for the assessment of the impact of soil moisture and biomass on carbon balance" relates to the application of CO2 measurements by the SCIAMACHY sensor for the environment. The main objective of the Project was to use the satellite data as an input to the model of assessing carbon balance. Unfortunately it was not possible to obtain the data from the satellite at the time of carbon in-situ measurements. The paper presents the relationships performed between CO2 values derived from SCIAMACHY data and meteorological parameters measured at ground stations throughout Poland. Also presented is the relationship between CO2 and the vegetation index (NDVI) calculated from NOAA satellites, and between CO2 concentration and the percentage of forest cover in NUTS2 regions in Poland. The correlation between CO2 and air temperature T has been found to be significant, as well as that between CO2 and net radiation Rn. In the regional scale it was also concluded that the percentage of forest areas determines the concentration of CO2 in the air. In addition the seasonal correlation of CO2 and NDVI was determined. This research might be a contribution for the further analysis of air quality using the Sentinel- 4 and 5 of the COPERNICUS Programme.

Ponieważ konstelacja satelitów Sentinel została zaprojektowana w ramach Europejskiego Programu Obserwacji Ziemi: COPERNICUS, dane przeznaczone do badań naukowych będą bezpłatne.
The objective of the study was to investigate temporal variability of outdoor radon (222Rn) concentration registered in the center of Łódź (urban station), at Ciosny (rural station) and Kraków (suburban station) in relation to meteorological parameters (i.e. air temperature, temperature vertical gradient, wind speed, soil heat flux, volumetric water content in soil) with special consideration of urban-rural differences. Continuous measurements of 222Rn concentration (at 60 min intervals) were performed at a height of 2 m above the ground using AlphaGUARDŽ PQ2000PRO (ionization chamber) from January 2008 to May 2009. 222Rn levels were characterized by a diurnal cycle with an early morning maximum and a minimum in the afternoon. The well-marked 24 h pattern of radon concentration occurred in summer at anticyclonic weather with cloudless sky, light wind and large diurnal temperature ranges. The urban measurement site was characterized by the lowest atmospheric 222Rn concentration and an urban-rural differences of radon levels increased from winter to summer and during the nighttime periods. The maximum contrasts of 222Rn levels between Łódź and Ciosny, reaching – 30 Bqźm–3, were registered in June and July during the urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon (a positive thermal anomaly of a city if compared to rural area) and strong thermal inversion near the ground in the rural area.

The effect of meteorological parameters on conditions of air pollution in Olsztyn. In the paper analysed connection between the most often contaminative substance (CO, NOx, SO2 and concetrated dust) and basic meteorological parameters (temperature, relative humidity, air-pressure, wind velocity and solar radiation). The study conducted on five measuring point situated in Olsztyn from the winter cycle. The coefficient of linear correlation was enumerated and the equations of multiple regression was formed on their basic. The statistical analysis demonstrated essential relation temperature, wind velocity and relative humidity of air atmospheric condition. The small wind velocity, the low temperature and relative humidity provoked growing concentration of air pollution.
W pracy dokonano analizy statystycznej metodą regresji wielokrotnej wpływu czynników meteorologicznych, roślinnych i wilgotności gleby na temperaturę radiacyjną roślin w trzech różnych siedliskach użytków zielonych: okresowo mokrym, posusznym i suchym. Powiązanie wskaźnika pF z parametrami meteorologicznymi i roślinnymi w modelach regresji wielokrotnej umożliwiło wyjaśnienie zmienności temperatury radiacyjnej roślin w ponad 85%. W modelu dla trzech siedlisk łącznie stwierdzono istotny wpływ temperatury powietrza, promieniowania słonecznego, barwy roślin, wysokości roślin, wskaźnika pF i stopnia pokrycia gleby na temperaturę radiacyjną roślin. Wpływ wskaźnika pF na temperaturę roślin w przyjętym modelu regresji oceniono na około 10%.

Statistical analysis of the effect of meteorological and plant parameters and of soil moisture on infrared temperature of plant cover was performed using the multiple regression method. The measurements were carried out in three different grassland sites: periodically wet, drying and dry. Combination of the pF index with meteorological and plant parameters in the multiple regression models explained the variability of infrared temperature of plant cover in above 85%. In the model combining the three different sites, significant impact of air temperature, solar radiation, plant colour, plant height, pF index and the degree of soil cover on plant radiation temperature has been demonstrated. The influence of the pF index on plant radiation temperature was estimated at 10% in the adopted regression model.
The paper studies some determination peculiarities of atmospheric propagation delay by the microwave- and laser distance measurements in polar regions. On the basis of the average monthly and separate (one-time) aerological sounding data at a number of Antarctic and Arctic stations the distribution analysis of the main meteorological parameters as well as of refractivity both in space and in time is adduced. Zenith atmospheric delay for microwave- and laser range was estimated by the data of these stations. A small effect of moist component (zenith wet delay) in the Central Antarctica is noted. The values of dry and wet components of the zenith tropospheric delay obtained by radiosonde data and Saastamoinen and Hopfield’s analytical models are cited.
