This article explores the use of Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) derived point clouds to extract the shoreline of the Lake Kłodno (Poland), based on their geometry properties. The data collection was performed using the Velodyne VLP-16 laser scanner, which was mounted on the HydroDron Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV). A modified version of the shoreline extraction method proposed by Xu et al. was employed, comprising of the following steps: (1) classifying the point cloud using the Euclidean cluster extraction with a tolerance parameter of 1 m and min. cluster size of 10,000 points, (2) further filtration of boundary points by removing those with height above 1 m from the measured elevation of water surface, (3) manual determination of a curve consisting of 5 points located along the entire shoreline extraction region at a relatively constant distant from the coast, (4) removal of points that are further from the curve than the average distance, repeated twice. The method was tested on the scanned section of the lake shoreline for which Ground Control Points (GCP) were measured using a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Real Time Kinematic (RTK) receiver. Then, the results were compared to the ground truth data, obtaining an average position error of 2.12 m with a standard deviation of 1.11 m. The max error was 5.54 m, while the min. error was 0.41 m, all calculated on 281 extracted shoreline points. Despite the limitations of this parametric, semi-supervised approach, those preliminary results demonstrate the potential for accurate shoreline extraction based on LiDAR data obtained using an USV. Further testing and optimisation of this method for larger scale and better generalisation for different waterbodies are necessary to fully assess its effectiveness and feasibility. In this context, it is essential to develop computationally efficient methods for approximating shorelines that can accurately determine their course based on a set of points.

W niniejszym artykule podjęto problem pomiarów i modelowania istniejącego obiektu budowlanego z wykorzystaniem skaningu laserowego 3D.

Laser scanning 3D technology has almost unlimited opportunities of application in many disciplines of modern civil engineering. Obtaining a point cloud using laser scanning and creating 3D models allows producing a highly detailed 3D computer image of a measuring facility. Obtaining a cloud of points as a result of laser scanning and its use to create 3D models of building objects allows for the development of a detailed, three-dimensional image. The use of data obtained with this technology has not only a practical dimension, but also creates wide opportunities for conducting scientific research. It enables the development of inventory documentation, conducting structural analyses and supports the facility management process. In the paper, the problem of measurements and modelling of an existing building object with the use of 3D laser scanning was taken up. For this purpose, the so-called Scan-to-BIM methodology was used and, as a result, a 3D model of the analysed building was developed. Particular attention was paid to the assessment of object mapping errors. Direct measurements of selected geometry elements were made and deviations in relation to real dimensions were determined. Basic measures of statistical accuracy assessment were used to analyse the results. The obtained results showed that the accuracy of identifying the length of selected elements of the existing building and their length from the digital model is a maximum of ±1cm.
The article presents the results of an experiment related to wildlife inventory control with the use of data from terrestrial laser scanning. The measurements were performed with the terrestrial laser scanning system – Riegl VZ-400i. The study area was the Obrońców Westerplatte square in Wrocław. The collected measurement data were pre-processed in a commercial – dedicated RiSCAN Pro environment. Operations related to point cloud georeferencing and its filtering were performed. The tree parameters were measured on the basis of a cloud point obtained in field surveys. This operation was performed with the use of the 3D Forest software. The investigations covered the main parameters of the tree (height and diameter) along with additional parameters, such as the distance between two points of the tree located furthest apart, the surface area of the orthogonal projection of the tree on the reference surface (terrain surface) and the height of the tree crown above the terrain surface. As a result of the performed analyses, an inventory of 70 trees was made within the Obrońców Westerplatte square in Wrocław. Part of the experiment was also to prepare a 3D model of a tree by using some available modeling algorithms. This part was performed in Sequoia software - dedicated to such operations. The software offers three modeling algorithms: Zhu/Bridson, metaballs and union of spheres.

For underground mine workings, the shape of the computational domain may be difficult to define. Historically, the geometry models of mine drifts were not accurate representations of the object but rather a simplified approximation. To fully understand a phenomenon and save time on computations, simplification is often required. Nevertheless, in some situations, a detailed depiction of the geometry of the object may be necessary to obtain adequate simulation results. Laser Scanning enables the generation of 3D digital models with precision beyond the needs of applicable CFD models. Images composed of millions of points must be processed to obtain geometry suitable for computational mesh generation. A section of an underground mine excavation has been selected as an example of such transformation. Defining appropriate boundary conditions, especially the inlet velocity profile, is a challenging issue. Difficult environmental conditions in underground workings exclude the application of the most efficient and precise methods of velocity field measurements. Two attempts to define the inlet velocity profile have been compared. The first one used a sequence of simulations starting from a flat profile of a magnitude equal to the average velocity. The second one was based on the sixteen-point simultaneous velocity measurement, which gave consistency with measurement results within the range of applied velocity measurement method uncertainty. The article introduces a novel methodology that allows for more accurate replication of the mine excavation under study and the attainment of an appropriate inlet velocity profile, validated by a satisfactory correspondence between simulation outcomes and field measurements. The method involves analysing laser-scanned data of a mine excavation, conducting multi-point velocity measurements at specific cross-sections of the excavation that are unique to mining conditions, and utilising the k-ω SST turbulence model that has been validated for similar ventilation problems in mines.

The civil engineering is characterised by a high accident rate dring the execution of all types of work, which is largely due to the individual nature of each project. The risk of an accident will be greater during technical condition assessments and in particular, during renovation and/or demolition work on buildings where there has not been a proper maintenance policy for many years. It is necessary to seek solution that minimise the risk to life and health of the occupants of such facilities. We propose to increase safety during the assessment of the technical condition of a facility and the subsequent conduct of works in the facility by using modern method such as an inventory of the facility with unmanned vehicles and its scanning, creating a model of the facility and then the possibility to simulate the conduct of demolition works.
