Augmented Reality in the presentation of city monuments: a case study of “Bielsko-Biała AR guide” mobile application

Augmented Reality (AR) is one of the modern technologies used for sharing 3D geospatial data. This article presents possible ways of enriching a mobile application containing information about 50 objects located in the city of Bielsko-Biała with an AR functionality. The application was created in two programs: Android Studio and Unity. The application allows to get to know historical objects of the city, encourages to visit them by adding virtual elements observed in the background of a real-time camera image from a mobile device. The article presents the statistics of the application usage and the results of a survey conducted among a group of testers. Feedback from application testers confirms the validity of using AR technology in the application.

Rzeczywistość Rozszerzona (Augmented Reality – AR) jest jedną z nowoczesnych technologii wykorzystywanych do udostępniania danych przestrzennych 3D. W artykule przedstawiono możliwe sposoby wzbogacenia aplikacji mobilnej o funkcjonalność AR. Aplikacja zawiera informacje o 50 obiektach zlokalizowanych na terenie miasta Bielska-Białej i została stworzona w dwóch programach: Android Studio oraz Unity. Aplikacja pozwala na poznanie zabytkowych obiektów miasta oraz zachęca do ich zwiedzania poprzez dodanie wirtualnych elementów obserwowanych w czasie rzeczywistym na tle obrazu z kamery urządzenia mobilnego. W artykule przedstawiono statystyki użytkowania aplikacji oraz wyniki ankiety przeprowadzonej wśród grupy testerów. Informacje zwrotne od testerów aplikacji potwierdzają zasadność zastosowania technologii AR w aplikacji.

The Electronic Atlas of the Environment in Poland is a multimedia presentation package for pupils, college students, teachers, and average users who are interested in environmental issues. The main idea behind creating such a presentation was to increase the knowledge about the Polish nature as well as to spread environmental awareness, especially among the youngest members of the society. The Atlas is a valuable, interactive source of environmental information on Poland and also one of the first multimedia programmes that enables the users to get familiar with geovisualisation of statistical datasets. A number of multimedia tools give access to geographic data through different media: maps, texts, diagrams, tables, figures, photos and animations. High interactivity is a distinctive feature of the Atlas. Thematic maps, diagrams, pictures, and animations illustrate all subjects. The whole project was carried out by UNEP/GRID-Warsaw in close co-operation with specialists in the field of natural sciences. The Electronic Atlas of the Environment in Poland is a useful tool for teachers and can be actively used at all levels of education based on modern, information technology-oriented approach.

Mapa jest podstawowym sposobem prezentacji informacji z wielu dziedzin stąd internetowe serwisy informacyjne oparte o mapy to obecnie często stosowane rozwiązanie. W pracy przedstawiono dwa przykłady takich serwisów. Pierwszy projekt to rozwiązanie pokazujące możliwości wykorzystania mapy jako źródła informacji o krajowej sieci pomiarowej z zakresu hydrologii i meteorologii. Drugi przykład zorientowany jest na wspomaganie lokalnych specjalistów odpowiedzialnych za operacyjne działania w ochronie przeciwpowodziowej. Ww. rozwiązania zostały wygenerowane w dużej mierze automatycznie na podstawie danych GIS zaś do prezentacji map w internecie wykorzystano Scalable Vector Graphics; stosunkowo nowy język z rodziny XML, zorientowany na opis dwuwymiarowej grafiki w sieci www.

Map is the fundamental way of presenting information in several domains thus, map-based web sites are presently an often used solution. This paper presents two examples of such solution. The first design show possibilities of use map as a source of information concerning the nation-wide measurement network in the area of hydrology and meteorology. The second example is oriented toward assistance of local specialists responsible for operational activities in flood protection. The web sites content were generated in large measure automatically on the basis of GIS database. Scalable Vector Graphics, a new language for describing two-dimensional graphics and graphical applications in XML, is used for map presentation.
