Burial Robes of the Polish King Sigismund III Vasa. Analysis of Textiles and Clothing

The subject of the paper are the grave robes of the Polish King Zygmunt III Vasa, resting in the crypt in the Archcathedral Basilica of Saint Stanislaus and Saint Wenceslaus on the Wawel Hill in Kraków. The studies presented were possible thanks to an ‘in situ’ analysis of the clothes and a possibility of taking samples of textiles from which the clothing was sewn. The paper presents the results of a comprehensive textile analysis of fabrics, a description of the clothing that made up the funerary robes and analysis of the results obtained in the context of historical sources and works of art depicting the monarch.

Odzież dziecięca przez wieki była miniaturową kopią ubiorów dorosłych. Ubiór był wtedy wykonany z ciężkich materiałów, krępował swobodę ruchów i często deformował sylwetkę dziecka. Dopiero w XIX wieku zaczęto dostosowywać odzież do budowy i psychiki dziecka, jednak radykalne zmiany nastąpiły dopiero w okresie międzywojennym. Obecnie moda dla dzieci charakteryzuje się nie tylko różnorodnością form, czy bogactwem ozdób, ale przede wszystkim powinna uwzględniać specyfikę tych wyrobów odzieżowych, gwarantując jej funkcjonalność oraz bezpieczeństwo użytkowania.

For centuries children’s clothing was a miniature copy of adult clothes. In the past the garment was made of heavy materials, what caused restraining a freedom of movement and often deformed the child’s body. Since the nineteenth century the clothing has begun to been customized to the psyche and child’s body, however, radical changes took place only in the interwar period. Currently fashion for children is characterized not only by the diversity of forms, or ornaments, but first of all it should take into account the specificity of these garments, guaranteeing its functionality and safety.
