Social changes cause in contemporary reality such phenomena like relativism of rules, totalitarianism and globalisation. They obviously refers also to architecture. They transform the notion of architecture by moving its boundaries and extending its range to the infinite architectural space i.e. architectural universe. It can embrace all spatial forms, the natural ones and those built by man.

Every quest for limits of phenomenons, ideas or material things is a very fascinating task. Therefore those limits describe, determine, characterize, differentiate or simply close. This paper refers to only one, presented from subjective point of view, aspect of the question how to define limits of architecture.

Attempts to find what is architecture became almost frantic. One could say that instead of increasing quality of architecture we are trying to develop its definition. However, knowledge of definition and scope of architecture are necessary. First, they indicate buildings (urban complexes) which are examples of so called „good architecture". Secondly, they point out those of us who are crossing borders - and it is up to us to say we are face new directions in architecture or to deny proposals as „no architecture". To be successful we have to remember that it is kind of „fight on architecture" and a stake in this game are freedom of the individual and democracy.

Adolf Loos placed two items within the limits of architecture - tomb and monument. Anything beyond had to be excluded from the world of art. Did he define the limits of architecture? Although he pointed out monument, he never specified a clear definition. The thesis, inspired by Loos's dictum and a photograph of two buildings in Place de la Maison Carre in Nimes (Il. 1) explains the significance of the stairs in an attempt to define what makes a building a monument.

Theme of the conference leads to thinking about definitions of architecture. Trying to find an answer the present author discusses two terms widely used in Polish architectural discussions of recent times: identity and orderliness, which are commonly abused and misinterpreted. This leads to misunderstandings and makes formulating the up-to-date definition difficult. Conclusion is that the limits for architecture are set by human mind.

There has been a number of definitions of architecture developed and applied through history. Depending on the definition one can also define the limits and „borderlands" of architecture. Depending on their characteristics there are numerous pieces of architecture to be placed within the limits of architecture or outside. Some of them can be disputed whether they belong to architecture or not, such as unbuilt things; imagined things; ugly, poorly built or impractical buildings. A specific example of a „margin of architecture" are paintings showing fantastic townscapes; they consist of real buildings, existing in given towns, mixed in the paintings. It has been illustrated by discussing two 20th-century paintings by outstanding Polish artists.

It's difficult to find border between bad or good architecture. Borders in art, generally are just in author's mind. It's not good to close world of architecture in any border. Every author should make different world for his own project.

In recent times the meaning of the word architecture has extended to include many aspects of life. At the same time the process of building has become subject to fewer and fewer limitations both formal, functional and technological. Designing requires a varied and many-sided approach, and an interdisciplinary character. As architecture is a combination of different needs, abilities and ambitions, it can not be subjected to immutable limits and definitions. Even its very essence is subject to changes together with development of civilisation.

We do not knows, what to do with a Case of the Doghouse; where is its territory.

Is the border between architects vision and urban planner's vision still existing and where it lays? According to the law, in spatial and urban planning, planners should define architectural form of future development. Their task is also to take care of public interest and quality of public space. It is obvious, that private and public interests are often quite different. Private land owners take care mainly of their own business and rarely are interested in what is out of their property. Because spatial order appears as an important aim of any local plan, it is impossible to achieve it anticipating incoherent, but even best architectural visions of different architects working in the same space. New law contain tools appropriate to implementation and control of architectural forms throughout the whole process of planning, designing and building. What is the price of freedom of creation architectural forms? Should we still pay quality of space we live in for? Those questions are always up to date. Where lays border between architects vision and urban planner's vision? Spatial order is an aim of any local plan; it is impossible to achieve it anticipating incoherent, but even best architectural visions of different architects working in the same space. Architect Adolf Loos (1870-1933) was one of the most important pioniers of the European Modern movement. He was an early opponent of the decorative trends of Art Nouveau. Is Ornament a Crime? Everything else that fulfils a function is to be excluded from the domain of art. What had Loos said?

An attempt has been made to show how essential values: durability, usefulness and beauty are helpful to explain or to define the bounds of architecture. The civilazation has influenced the conception of the Vitruvius's triad. A lot of opinions especially concerning the aesthetic form are subjective that makes it difficult to establish the exact definition of the bounds of architecture. Besides, the building materials, the way of using the building and its aesthetics are constantly changing. However, the objects deprived of these features can't be numbered among the architectural objects.

Architecture of events is architecture beyond aesthetics. With some new tools like superposition, crosspro-gramming, disjunction, diagrams and folding developed by Tschumi, Eisenman and Koolhaas we can make architecture without designing of form, function and structure. Last year two of my students developed graduate projects using tools of architecture of events, which shows that architecture can reach beyond aesthetics.

It's hard to determine limits of architecture, especially limits of specific kind of architecture and if architecture is good or bad. It seems the range of architecture is compatible with the range of human activity. However formulating a definition of „good architecture" would show a way to create an ideal work and it would be unfeasible. Instead of this, we can search some determinants leading to creation elements of good architecture - with proper proportions, historical and regional values, and elements of art.

It doesn’t seem to be very hazardous to claim that architecture is the science and an art „on borderline". Following the idea of Jadwiga Sławińska one can say that architecture locates itself between two spheres of culture: the symbolical culture, and the culture of being. This peculiar condition can be the reason of multiplication of architectural definitions and impossibility of precise limits of architecture as an aesthetic figure and a kind of scientific theory as well.

A thin line on the map, which marks a border line between two countries, hardly ever is a border line between two different worlds. There is always a spatial buffer called „borderland". The question is whether the border line has an effect on the architecture of the borderland. Białystok and Grodno are two twin-cities, which used to grow-up in similar conditions on the eastern borderland of Poland. That is why the space of both cities from the period till the beginning of II World War is very alike. After that they must have parted company. The author makes an attempt to find out in what way a new border line between them influenced their architecture (esp. in the field of housing architecture).
