Produkcyjne procesy obróbki chemicznej należą w dużej mierze do grupy procesów specjalnych. W ramach ich doskonalenia wyszczególnia się błędy, źródła występowania oraz wskazuje przyczyny ich powstawania. W działaniach takich wykorzystuje się instrumenty zarządzania i dostępne technologie. Dokonano analizy obróbki powierzchni tłoków w procesie cynowania. Tłoki te były przeznaczone do wysokoprężnych silników pojazdów osobowych. W ramach realizacji założeń badań zidentyfikowano źródła niezgodności tłoków powstające w procesie cynowania odlewów. W tym celu wykorzystano i zintegrowano wybrane metody zarządzania jakością. Podjęte działania przyczyniły się do znacznego zwiększenia poziomu jakości tłoków o powłoce cynowej.

Selected quality management methods (Ishikawa diagram, gemba walk) were used to det. the cause of the incorrect coverage of the Al piston surface with a Sn layer. The defects resulted from the wrong sequence of adding components to the tinning bath.

The article presents a method of piston temperature measurement on a running engine using electromagnetic induction for transferring measurement results from a moving measuring system placed in a piston to a stationary system attached to the engine crankcase and to measuring system located outside the engine. Selected test results that were carried out on a single-cylinder Diesel engine are presented. A system consisting of a thermistor and a secondary coil was mounted in the piston. The primary coil was mounted in the crankcase under the cylinder liner of the engine. Engine tests were aimed at determining the influence of the piston ring insert on the temperature distribution in the piston. Temperature measurements in the piston without the ring insert were carried out for comparison. In both cases, the pistons had the same geometrical dimensions. The tests were carried out in conditions of external characteristics (the maximum load as a function of engine speed) and load characteristics (load changes at constant engine speed). The test results in the form of the temperature difference between the temperature of piston top and the temperature under the top compression ring indicate that the ring insert is a barrier to the heat flow from the piston to the engine cooling system. In addition, the results of the piston temperature measurements during the step change of the engine speed and its load to the nominal value are presented.

Certain results of the comparative studies of the high-speed Diesel engine V-12 of the “W” series were presented in the article. The engine was modernised in regard of possibilities to achieve better performances at specific fuel consumption, smaller exhaust emission, smaller scavenge, lower noise and better thermal stability. The subject of this work is the piston cast of novel composite silumin. The development of novel composite silumin (aluminium-silicon alloy), which contains a little more Copper and Nickel, and the introduction of novel alloyed elements, such as Chromium, Molybdenum, Tungsten, increases the strength of the alloy and its thermal stability during successive heating and cooling. The pistons made of this alloy may have a little bigger outside diameter than the pistons made of PA-12 standard alloy, and a smaller clearance between the piston and cylinder liner. The pistons made of standard and novel alloy were mounted successively in the "W" engine. The full load and part load curves were determined. The lubrication oil consumption, fuel consumption, exhaust emission, blow-by and noise were determined too. The article presents the results of the above-mentioned research. The novel composite alloy enables further engine modernization because the engine should operate at higher pressure and temperature in the combustion chamber.

In the dissertation, the 5M Method, is being presented, of typical causes and consequences of quality defects of cast-iron inserts „alphin” embedded in aluminum cast. The diffusive connection of those rings, with pistons casts is being used, because of the extreme conditions in which they need to operate in, which are of high temperature and variable thermo-mechanical burden, which are in the working chamber of combustion engine.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań mikrotwardości i modułu Younga warstw wierzchnich wybranych powierzchni tłoka samochodowego. Pomiarów dokonywano w płaszczu, denku oraz piaście tłoka w aspekcie określenia stopnia zużycia. Przedstawiono metodykę przeprowadzonych badań oraz scharakteryzowano obiekt badawczy w postaci tłoka Φ 80,0 mm, wykonanego ze stopu aluminiowego. Przedstawiono przebiegi czasowe zadawanego obciążenia P oraz wartości zagłębienia h wgłębnika w powierzchnię próbki piasty, płaszcza oraz denka tłoka. Zamieszczono charakterystyki wartości średnich oraz odchyleń standardowych modułu Younga E w funkcji siły obciążającej Pmax dla wybranych warstw wierzchnich. Dokonano analizy uzyskanych wyników badań oraz sformułowano wnioski końcowe.

The paper presents the results of micro-hardness and Young's modulus measurements of the surface layers of selected surfaces of engine piston. Indentations were performed in the side, bottom, and the hub of the piston, in the aspect of the wear determination. The methodology of testing and studied objects, a piston made of aluminium alloy, 80,0 mm diameter, were characterized. The indentation results, as characteristic load P vs. penetration depth h curves, which were done into the selected piston surfaces were given. The mean values and standard deviations of Young's modulus E and microhardness as a function of normal force Pmax were compared.

Increased weight and greater requirements, regarding manoeuvring opportunities need extension of the power of combustion engines determining their powertrain units. In case of the family "W" engines, following developmental versions came into existence as a result of the modernization of the earlier version, among others thru the optimization of the combustion process, applying of the supercharging, as well as strengthening of the internal construction, which made it possible to carry greater thermal and mechanical loads. The subjects of the study were pistons made from composite materials of the small hysteresis of the alloy mounted on the S12-U combustion engine. In the novel construction of the piston, the outline of the overcoat was modified, the shape of the combustion chamber, the hole for the piston pin, grooves for the piston rings and shape of internal surfaces remained unchanged. A characteristic feature of the novel piston is the smaller hysteresis of the coefficient of thermal expansion composite alloy, alfa of which the pistons were made, whereas a so-called hysteresis is the difference of the coefficient alfa, which occurs during warming and piston cooling, and takes place during working of the piston in the combustion engine. The smaller hysteresis of the coefficient alfa makes the decreasing clearances between piston and cylinder possible, what has a beneficial influence on work parameters of the combustion engine, especially under conditions of partial loading of the engine. Basic parameters of the engine for the maximum torque characteristics and load characteristics are the object of the paper.

The compression-ignition engine as a case study of a methodology of the numerical modelling and simulation of the piston - piston rings - cylinder system was presented in the paper. Thermomechanical FE analysis, taking into account thermal and mechanical loads, was carried out using the MSC.Marc/Mentat software. The mechanical loads included loads due to inertial and gas forces as well. A three dimensional solid geometrical model of the considered set was developed using AutoCAD software, whereas the finite element mesh was generated using Altair HyperMesh. Kinematic boundary conditions - the vertical displacement and acceleration of the piston - were described by the corresponding curves as a function of time for selected engine speed. Changes in pressure on the piston crown were estimated based on data from the engine manufacturer and the corresponded indicator diagram available in the literature. The results of thermomechanical FE analysis were presented in the form of stress and/or displacement contours. The main aim of the analysis was to determine the deformation of the piston depending of on the piston material. Two types of material were compared - the actual one PA12 aluminum alloy and the new composite material with low hysteresis. The second material was characterized by slight differences of the coefficient of thermal expansion for heating and cooling.

The main purpose of the preliminary analyses presented in the paper was to compare the behaviour of the combustion engine piston made of different type of materials under thermal load. A thermomechanical FE analysis of the engine piston made of composite material was shown. A selected engine is installed in one of the popular polish tanks. The proposed new material is characterized by a low hysteresis – the differences of the coefficient of thermal expansion for heating and cooling are not significant. The results obtained for the piston made of a new material were compared with those for the current standard material. The piston was loaded by a temperature field inside it. Appropriate averaged thermal boundary conditions such as temperatures and heat fluxes were set on different surfaces of the FE model. FE analyses were carried out using MSC.Marc software. Development of the FE model was also presented. Geometrical CAD model of the piston was developed based on the actual engine piston, which was scanned using a 3D laser scanner. A cloud of points obtained from the scanner was processed and converted into a 3- dimensional solid model. FE model of a quarter part of the piston was developed for the preliminary analysis presented in the paper. 4-node tetrahedron finite elements were applied since there was no axial symmetry of the considered object. The temperature field inside the piston was determined and presented in the form of contour bands. Contours of displacement and stress in a radial direction were shown as well.

Przedstawiono wpływ wybranych parametrów eksploatacyjnych na rozkład naprężeń/odkształceń denka tłoka silnika spalinowego o zapłonie samoczynnym. Zastosowanie analizy MES pozwoliło na wyjaśnienie mechanizmu zużywania, prowadzącego do pojawienia się uszkodzeń na powierzchni denka tłoka. Otrzymane wyniki z badań eksploatacyjnych potwierdzają pojawienie sie pęknięć i wykruszeń w miejscach występowania maksymalnych naprężeń i odkształceń.

Effects of the selected service parameters on the strain/stress distribution in piston head of the self- ignition engine. The FEM has been found suitable to explain the wear mechanism leading to the damage symptoms showing on the piston head surface.

Research results of novel silumins on pistons for combustion engines, which have high mechanical properties within the range of piston higher operating temperatures, 100-300°C, are presented in the paper. Silumins contain enlarging concentration of the nickel and copper alloy additives up to 4.0, and chrome and molybdenum alloy additives up to 1.0%. Occurrence of given microstructure in piston-silumins results in almost the same values of the coefficient thermal expansion during the heating up to the 300 °C temperature and during the next cooling into the ambient temperature. Small values of the coefficient of expansion of thermal and small differences between values of the coefficient of thermal expansion during heating and cooling enable on application of small values of working clearances between piston and the cylinder liner. As a consequence they make possible, the low exhaust emission level, and the low noise level. The pistons from alloys with small values ofthe coefficient of thermal expansion, small differences of this coefficient during heating and cooling are novel aspects presented in paper. Research results of strength and metallographic parameters, research results of the coefficient of thermal expansion, comparative engine research results are represented in the paper. In particular representative chemical components for a standard alloy and novel alloy, mechanical properties investigated alloys after solution heat treatment, wear resistance of novel alloy compared with two cast irons, ATD curves, fibrous construction, silicon construction, microstructure of novel alloy, courses of changes of the coefficient of thermal expansion in the function of the temperature during heating and cooling are presented in the paper.

Przedstawiono aktualny stan zastosowania spawalniczych technologii laserowych w przemyśle okrętowym. Omówiono pokrótce charakterystyczne cechy tych technologii, a także parametry techniczne stosowanych obecnie przemysłowo spawalniczych urządzeń laserowych. Na konkretnych przykładach wykazano oszczędności, jakie pozwala uzyskać wdrożenie techniki laserowej do przemysłu okrętowego. Przedstawiono przykłady zastosowań odnoszące sie do cięcia i spawania laserowego blach kadłubowych, a także przykłady wykorzystania techniki laserowej do obróbki powierzchniowej elementów maszyn okrętowych, szczególnie tłoków silników okrętowych. Opisano próby przemysłowego zastosowania metod hybrydowych, tj. połączenia konwencjonalnych technologii spawalniczych i technologii laserowych.

It has been described the present-day state of application of laser welding techniques to shipbuilding industry. Distinctive features of these techniques as well as technical parameters of laser welding equipment being used nowadays in industry have been discussed in short. The savings which can be achieved through implementation of laser technique to shipbuilding industry has been shown on definite examples. It has been shown also the examples of application of laser welding and cutting technique to hull plates working and to surface treatment of ship machine components, especially to marine engine pistons. The trials of industrial use of hybrid methods, i.e. connection of conventional welding methods with laser technique have been described.
