Suppliers and their role in modern enterprise – Case study

For each company, the process of selecting and evaluating suppliers of both the components needed for production and the implementation of production process is a very important aspect of their business, as the selection of appropriate contractors has an impact on the quality of final product, which is offered to customers. Dynamically changing situation in the company’s environment causes that success is achieved by those companies which implement new solutions and tools in their relations with suppliers. One such solution may include the PN-EN ISO 9001:2015 standard, which requires the organization to evaluate and select suppliers, taking into account their ability to provide a product compliant with the organization’s requirements. This paper presents a proposal to supplement the procedure of supplier qualification in a selected company. Attention was drawn to the fact that it is necessary for the modern organization to have access to database of qualified suppliers, who at the time of arising demand are able to meet the requirements set for them. It is also important for the enterprise to have at least two qualified suppliers for the same component in its database. Such an approach results from the current market requirements. The paper is based on a case study as a recognized method of analyzing and discussing authentic situations applied in management sciences.

W mniejszym opracowaniu skoncentrowano się na wartościach, które są ważne dla odbiorców w procesie pozyskiwania dostawców. Celem rozważań jest ich identyfikacja, ponieważ stanowią one integralną cześć budowy partnerstwa z dostawcami, które z kolei wyodrębnia się jako składową czynników sukcesu łańcuchów dostaw. W toku postepowania badawczego starano się udzielić odpowiedzi na pytanie: jakie czynniki są ważne dla odbiorców z perspektywy dostawców oraz jaki jest ich charakter (finansowy, marketingowy, logistyczny itp.). Badania przeprowadzono wśród przedsiębiorstw zarejestrowanych w Polsce, z wykorzystaniem autorskiego, ustrukturalizowanego kwestionariusza ankiety. Badane podmioty są producentami wyrobów finalnych i/lub (w mniejszym stopniu) dostawcami kolejnych rzędów (sprzedającymi półprodukty i częściowo przetworzone surowce).

In the study, the emphasis was placed on the values which are important for the recipients in the process of gaining suppliers. The aim of the considerations was the identification of the mentioned values since they constitute an integral part of building partnerships with suppliers. This, in turn, has been distinguished as a compound of supply chains’ success factors. During the research, an attempt was made to identify the crucial factors for the recipients, from the perspective of suppliers, and to specify their nature (financial, marketing, logistics, etc). The studies were conducted among the enterprises registered in Poland, with the use of an original, structured survey. The studied entities are final-product producers and/or (to a lesser extent) further-tier suppliers (selling semi-finished goods and partially processed raw materials).

Analiza tendencji przedsiębiorstw produkcyjnych na rynkach globalnych wykazuje wzrost zjawisk powodujących dynamiczne i zmienne potrzeby w zakresie doboru dostawców, które stają się bardzo istotne w zarządzaniu łańcuchem dostaw. Autor na podstawie wieloletnich badań i licznych studiów przypadku opracował nową komplementarną metodę oceny dostawców zorientowaną na potencjał i możliwości w zakresie realizacji procesów transportowo-logistycznych. Swoje podejście uzasadnia istotnością, wymiernością i obiektywizmem ilościowych miar efektywności i czasu realizacji. W tym ujęciu opracował Parametryczna Ważoną Ocenę Dostawców (PWOD), która umożliwia wielokryterialną analizę z uwzględnieniem zdefiniowanych poziomów istotności wybranych parametrów oraz opracowanie karty oceny dostawców. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi pierwszy z cyklu opisującego Parametryczna Ważoną Ocenę Dostawców (PWOD), którego celem jest przedstawienie i otwarta dyskusja założeń proponowanej metody.

The analysis of the tendency of manufacturing enterprises in global markets shows an increase in the phenomenon of dynamic and changing supplier selection needs that are becoming increasingly important in supply chain management. The author, based on long-term research and numerous case studies, has developed a new complementary methodology for evaluating suppliers, with a focus on the potential and capabilities of transport and logistics processes. This approach justifies the importance, measurability and objectivity of quantitative measure of effectiveness and time of implementation. In this perspective, he developed Parametric Weighted Supplier Evaluation (PWOD), which enables multicriteria analysis, taking into account defined levels of materiality of selected parameters and developing a supplier evaluation card. This article is the first in a series describing Parametric Weighted Supplier Evaluation (PWOD), which aims to present and open discussion of the proposed method.

This article presents the short specific of the metal industry company. Special attention was paid to the problems of selection suppliers in the supply area. Based of selected company it was raised the issue of supply quality control, selection and evaluation of suppliers. It presented used criteria for supplier assessment in the analyzed company. The results of the studies conducted have enabled the verification of the legitimacy of cooperate with selected suppliers.

Poziom jakości wyrobu gotowego zależy przede wszystkim od materiału wsadowego używanego w procesie produkcji. W przypadku branży metalowej przykładowym materiałem wsadowym może być walcówka. Odpowiednio dobrany skład chemiczny, a także warunki przebiegu procesu produkcyjnego mają wpływ na wyroby, które można z niej otrzymać. Analogicznie można rzec, że nieodpowiednio dobrany skład chemiczny oraz niewłaściwy przebieg procesu produkcyjnego składają się na końcową niską jakość produktu gotowego, np. drutu czy siatki. Oznacza to, że dokładna ocena dostawcy materiału wsadowego jest niezwykle ważna dla skutecznego oraz efektywnego funkcjonowania przedsiębiorstwa. Celem niniejszej publikacji jest przybliżenie wybranych metod i technik doboru i oceny dostawców oraz wskazanie zasadności ich wykorzystania w celu zapewnienia jakości wytwarzanym wyrobom.

Purpose: The problem includes the three objective functions: minimizing the total cost, the net rejected items and the inverse total value of purchasing (TVP), while satisfying capacity and demand requirement constraints. Design/methodology/approach: The model is established for supplier selection problem and later the proposed single objective model is used to calculate the optimum order quantities among the selected suppliers. A numerical example is given to illustrate how the model is applied. Findings: In this article, we proposed a single objective function to solve the fuzzy multi-item multi-objective model in order to calculate the optimum order quantities to each supplier. Practical implications: Single objective function, which is able to consider the relative importance of the goals, is proposed to solve the model. A numerical example is given to illustrate how the model is applied. Originality/value: This approach is able to help the DM evaluate the suppliers in order to find out the appropriate order to each them, and allows purchasing manager(s) to manage supply chain performance on service, cost, quality and etc. the suppliers price breaks, which depend on the sizes of order quantities, affects the selection process.
