Content available remote ICT usage in industrial symbiosis: problem identification and study design
EN
Industrial symbiosis is a favored approach to balancing industry's economic growth and its environmental impact on a regional scale. Although the scientific literature reports a multitude of examples of industrial symbiosis around the world, this approach and its related concepts are not considered to be widespread in practice, due to various barriers. Information and management barriers are seen as significant obstacles to industrial symbiosis; however, they have not been adequately investigated yet. Empirical research capturing the perception of industrial actors is lacking. This applies especially to information and communication technology designed to reduce informational barriers. Therefore, in this research-in-progress paper, we will first examine these aspects by discussing related publications. In the second step, we develop a study design involving an online questionnaire to examine the extent of managerial and informational barriers that prevent industrial symbiosis as well as the perception of corresponding technological support.

e-Choupal is an initiative of Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) Limited which came into existence in the year 2000 with an objective to link rural farmers via the Internet to procure agricultural products. Traditionally, agricultural commodities were procured in mandis, major agricultural marketing centers in rural areas, where the middleman make most of the profit. These middlemen used unscientific and unfair means to judge the quality and set the price of the product and therefore there has been less incentive for the farmers to invest and produce good quality output. With the formation of e-Choupal, the farmers were given a choice to sell their products freely diminishing the influence of the middlemen. This initiative also addressed issues like fragmented farms, weak institutions, and information asymmetry amongst farmers. This paper examines and evaluates the business model of ITC e-Choupal and studies the acceptance of this business by the farmers.

Content available remote Novel Maritime Communications Technologies
EN
Current maritime systems are to a large extent based on legacy analog VHF radios for ship-to-shore communications near port waters, and relatively low bandwidth digital satellite communications (Sat-Com) for long-range ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communications. The cost of bandwidth for SatCom net-works is expected to remain high due to the cost of launching satellites into orbit and also due to the stabilizers required for presently available on-board antennas. On the other hand, the legacy VHF system compris-es low bandwidth radios incapable of supporting applications requiring high data rates. Unlike the terrestrial networks, advancement in maritime networks is severely lagging behind its land counterpart. MARINTEK is the principle investigator of the MarCom project, a joint initiative between several national and international R&D institutions, Universities and Colleges, Public Authorities and Industry, funded by the industry itself and The Norwegian Research Council’s MAROFF program, and aiming at developing a novel digital communication system platform to ensure the proliferation of innovative mobile network applications presently being widely implemented on land-based wireless systems.

Content available Maritime Communication to Support Safe Navigation
EN
The main objectives of the MarCom project (‘Maritime Communications - broadband at sea’) are to investigate the main user needs and communication technologies requirements to accommodate those needs within the maritime community. The project will carry out several pilots to demonstrate the usability of terrestrial wireless technologies in combination with, and in some areas instead of satellite communication (SatCom). The major benefit to the maritime users are expected to be reduced costs, increased bandwidth, Quality-of-Service (QoS) and improved communication security and versatility. The MarCom approach is characterized by combining thorough investigations of present and future user needs through nine scenarios/user cases along with identification of cost-effective communication platforms to match the application requirements being obtained. The MarCom investigations have revealed the bandwidth needs for a set of application groups, and identified the data integrity requirements for each group. Furthermore this paper is addressing the MarCom work with the IMO/IALA e-Navigation strategic initiative in establishing the bandwidth requirements to obtain the major objectives of the e-Navigation concept.

The paper aims are presenting the concept of food supply chain and networks management and its components applicable in design of modern fresh and processed (frozen) food distribution systems. Introduction of the traceability concept allows analysis of shipments movements and their origin and, as a consequence tracing the movement of food and its components throughout all stages of its production and distribution. The principles of consistency and transparency in data and information exchange among the participants in the food supply chain and networks create conditions for effectivity and efficiency of food supply systems operation securing their safety and quality making full use of the resources thanks to flexibility of reaction to changes occurring in the needs appearing in the market. The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) allows identification of the placement in space and time of food products , the sender and the destination within the food chain. In the second part of the paper the main conclusions of an international benchmark study of traceability systems in different supply chains in several countries are presented. The paper concludes with cost-benefits discussion related to issues that need to be taken into consideration when an organisation develops its chain traceability strategy.

Content available remote Polish approach to e-Navigation concept
EN
The advantage of the latest technical development in the field of automation, electronics, telecommunications, informatics, telematics, geomatics and global position fixing techniques, achievement in data storing, processing, analysing, transferring and visualisation should be taken into account and applied to the maritime technology. We should build new E-Navigation era using those new technologies. In the paper the Authors try to discuss the main tasks of the maritime community for the near future in the field of E-Navigation. The authors believe it is now appropriate to develop a broad strategic vision for incorporating the use of new technologies in a structured way and ensuring that their use is compliant with the various electronic navigational and communication technologies and services that are already available. The aim is to develop an overarching accurate, safe, secure and cost-effective system with the potential to provide global coverage for vessels of all sizes. Implementation of this new strategic vision might require modifications to working methods and navigational tools, such as inner ship’s computer net, charts, bridge display equipment, electronic aids to navigation, communications and shore infrastructure. At this stage, it is difficult to be precise about the full extent of the changes that might be necessary to fully deliver this vision. However, there might need to be changes to a number of regulatory instruments, including the appropriate chapters in the SOLAS Convention (chapters IV and V mainly). This proposal is not in any way intended to conflict with the clear principle, as confirmed in the SOLAS Convention, of the master’s authority for the operational safety of the vessel, and in UNCLOS, of freedom of navigation rights.
