The shape of a breakthrough curve charactering tracer migration in a filtration column is determined by several migration processes that occur during the transport of the tracer. The research presented in this paper was based on the interpretation of a breakthrough curve. This interpretation was performed in order to establish the parameters of water flow and tracer migration in a sample of soil. The relationship between the shape of a breakthrough curve and the processes that occur in the filtration column, as well as the parameters of water flow and tracer migration, were characterized. A mathematical model of a column experiment was formulated and solved using the MATLAB computational environment. Based on the sensitivity test executed for the model, the relation between the curve’s shape and the parameters of water flow and tracer migration was established. The sensitivity test was used for the parameters included in the mathematical equation of water flow and the following migration processes: advection, diffusion, dispersion, and sorption described by the Henry, Freundlich and Langmuir equations, as well as kinetic models of sorption. Calculations were performed assuming that the tracer is briefly injected at the input of the column. Such procedure creates conditions which resemble the superposition of two Heaviside impulses shifted in time and of opposite amplitudes. The variability range of the analyzed parameters was selected in accordance with data reported in the literature on migration parameters in laboratory conditions.

Ion exchange is one of the major geochemical processes affecting chemical composition of potable groundwater. Cation exchange capacity (CEC) is a major parameter required by reactive transport models. Nevertheless, the said parameter is rarely quantitatively evaluated in hydrogeochemical studies. Since the role of reactive transport models increases, the choice of the most accurate method of CEC evaluation is of major significance in groundwater studies. The paper presents the values of CEC of sediments sampled in the buried valley aquifer in the Racibórz area. In that aquifer, the distribution of many cations is controlled by ion exchange process. The measurements of CEC were performed with the use of three conventional methods (empirical formula, batch test and column experiment). Subsequently, the differences among the results are discussed.

Laboratory investigations of an ion migration through a ground sample were carried out. The experiments were conducted with one kind of natural ground (semi-coarse sand) and with one solution containing two kinds of tracers. Chloride ions were used as a passive tracer, while lithium ions were applied as an active tracer. The experiments were performed by means of three various size filtration columns constructed by the authors. First the tracers were injected according to an increasing and decreasing Heaviside’s function, and then according to approximate Dirac’s function. As a result 18 tracer breakthrough curves through the examinated ground samples were registered. The experiment data allowed identifying such tracer migration parameters as: dispersivity a, distribution coefficient Kd and retardation factor R. The migration parameters’ values were determined by two methods: the analytical solution of a mathematical model describing experiment conditions, and the calibration of numerical model created by means of Visual MODFLOW and MT3D99 programs. As the research result a group of migration parameters’ values was received for each of the filtration columns. As the conclusion the authors discussed a scale effect on the basis of the migration parameters’ values obtained by the analytical and numerical identifications.

This article discusses interpretation of results derived from column experiments. The study was performed on a column sorptiometer SK-2000. To assess the equivalent concentrations of ions adsorbed on the surface of solid phase, the authors suggest using a one-dimensional model of mass transport in advection-dispersion flux with regard to processes of sorption and ion exchange. The empirical data derived from the experiments performed and the results of model calculation were used for determining constant values of Langmuir's isotherm. These are preliminary results and this study is ongoing.
