Promising electricity and energy source is a biomass, that is a renewable energy source derived from living/recently living organisms - dedicated energy crops and trees, agricultural food and feed crops, agricultural crop waste and residue, wood waste and residue, aquatic plants, animal waste, municipal waste, and other waste materials. Biomass provides an opportunity to decrease environmental problems such as pollution and depletion of natural resources. It is widely available and regenerates in a relatively short time. The increase in the share of biomass in energy production in Poland is forecast. In addition, numerous, evenly distributed in Poland power plants and central heat plants, which can be converted from burning coal to burning biomass, constitute a local potential for the use of this renewable energy source. As a result of energy production from biomass, large amounts of ashes will be created, which will begin to displace the coal fly ash used in the production of concrete. The forecasted production of concrete for the coming years has a forecast growth exceeding the average forecast growth for the European Union countries. Taking into account the above, it seems reasonable to try to design and use concrete mixtures with the participation of biomass fly ash.

Biomasa jest aktualnie obiecującym źródłem energii. Biomasa jest odnawialnym źródłem pochodzącym z: dedykowanych roślin energetycznych i drzew, roślin spożywczych i pastewnych W rolnictwie, odpadów i pozostałości z upraw rolnych, odpadów i pozostałości drzewnych, roślin wodnych, odpadów zwierzęcych, odpadów komunalnych i innych materiałów odpadowych.

The present study investigates the production and characterization of alkali-activated bricks prepared with mixing metakaolin (MK) and biomass fly ash from the combustion of a mix of pine pruning, forest residues and energy crops (BFA). To use this low cost and high availability waste, diferent specimens were prepared by mixing MK with diferent proportions of BFA (25, 50 and 75 wt%). Specimens containing only metakaolin and biomass fly ash were produced for the purpose of comparison. Efects of the alkali content of biomass fly ash, after a washing pretreatment (WBFA), as well as the concentration of NaOH solution on the physical, mechanical and microstructural properties of the alkali-activated bricks were studied. It was observed that up to 50 wt% addition of the residue increases compressive strength of alkali-activated bricks. Alkalinity and soluble salts in fly ash have a positive efect, leading materials with the improved mechanical properties. Concentration of NaOH 8 M or higher is required to obtain optimum mechanical properties. The compressive strength increases from 23.0 MPa for the control bricks to 44.0 and 37.2 MPa with the addition of 50 wt% BFA and WBFA, respectively, indicating an increase of more than 60%. Therefore, the use of biomass fy ash provides additional alkali (K) sources that could improve the dissolution of MK resulting in high polycondensation. However, to obtain optimum mechanical properties, the amount of BFA cannot be above 50 wt%.

International agreements oblige our state to develop ecological sources of energy, one of which is biomass. During its combustion fly-ashes are produced. Several studies have shown that they might be useful in concrete production. The article presents a comparison of biomass fly-ash and coal fly-ash influence on the properties of cement composites. The replacement levels of cement by fly-ash (FA) were 20%, 40% and 60%. Biomass fly-ash FA(B) have replaced coal fly-ash by 0%, 50% and 100%. The compressive strength tests showed similarities in strength development of coal and biomass fly-ashes concretes. Specimens with biomass fly-ash presented similar or better abrasion resistance comparing to coal fly-ash samples.

The increasing amount of ashes originating from the combustion of alternative fuels causes a need to find ways for their practical application. The utilization of new ashes demands the knowledge about their properties. The present study focuses on the ashes from the combustion of bituminous coal and wood-biomass. The basic properties of both ashes were estimated. The analysis was carried out concerning the development of shrinkage deformations in mortars with and without an air entraining agent, containing 20% fly ash related to the cement mass. It has been found that the presence of the air entraining agent, as well as the origin and the form of fly ash had an essential effect on shrinkage of mortars. Moreover, the development in time of shrinkage deformations in the case of mortars containing fly ash proceeds in a different manner than for mortars without the addition.
