The small number of available complete modern pump characteristics makes the safety analysis of nuclear and conventional power plants based on the characteristics made over half a century ago of speciﬁc speeds nq = 24.6,147.1 and 261.4. The aim of the paper is to check sensitivity of the power plant system response for diﬀerent complete pump characteristics–modern and available from older tests for nq = 24.6, 147.1 and 261.4. It has been shown that Suter’s characteristics for modern pumps give a diﬀerent response to the pumping system of a power plant in break down than those used so far.

W Elektrowni Turów w nocy z 24/25 grudnia 1998 r. awaria elektryczna doprowadziła do całkowitego zniszczenia bloku energetycznego, uszkodzenia urządzeń sąsiednich bloków, groźnego pożaru w hali maszyn oraz wyłączenia prawie wszystkich zespołów wytwórczych. Tuż po awarii zostało powołanych kilka komisji technicznych, których zadaniem miało być określenie przyczyn awarii i środków zaradczych na przyszłość. Jedna z takich komisji została powołana przez Ministra Skarbu Państwa. Autor tego referatu był wiceprzewodniczącym tej komisji, zaś poniższy referat oparty jest na jego ekspertyzie autorskiej dołączonej do protokołu komisji.

The electric failure at the Turów power plant (Poland) on the night 24/25 December 1998 caused considerable damage. A large generating unit was completely destroyed causing a dangerous fire and the destruction of some parts of the neighbouring units. Almost all the generating units were switched off by the action of the protection devices. Shortly after the damage afew technical working groups were created in order to determine the cause of the damage and possible future prevention measures. The author of this paper was vice-chairman of the group of experts acting on behalf of the Minister of State Treasury. This paper is based on the author's expert opinion enclosed in the report of this group.
