Contemporary European cultural values in the context of axiology of sustainable development

Purpose: The purpose of the article is to present the issues of cultural values of modern Europe in reference to their ancient sources (Plato, Aristotle), as well as to indicate correlations between the value of European culture and the axiology of sustainable development. Design/methodology/approach: The article is based on a critical analysis of the literature on the subject. It presents in detail the issues of justice and responsibility, indicating Europe as a "community of responsibility". Justice is considered as a moral, legal and economic value, taking into account the generation and intergenerational perspective, as well as community and individual value. Responsibility, as in the case of justice, is shown in relation to the present and future generations. The subject and object of responsibility were defined and the main relational references of this moral and legal value were characterized. The article also refers to the basic documents constituting the concept of sustainable development. Findings: The analysis of the assumptions of the concept of sustainable development showed that in the concept, it can be seen that justice and responsibility are two basic values that are mutually conditioning and constitute the basis for the actual implementation of the assumptions of the concept of sustainable development, improvement of people's quality of life and ensuring security in its various dimensions. Originality/value: The article is addressed to a wide range of readers who deal with the practical implementation of the assumptions of the concept of sustainable development. The article can also provide a didactic background for teaching social subjects and humanities. There is an original approach to ethical values in the context of the assumptions of the concept of sustainable development.

The question of values more and more often constitutes a point of departure in deliberations on the practice of sustainable development. Some propositions have been developed for the axiological system of sustainable development. They are structurally complex since they incorporate defined levels of values Implementation of a given axiological system can, in turn, be secured by properly planned management. This management can be defined as the management socially important values that are part of the widely understood social management. The article will show the role of sustainable development axiology in the context of the crisis of morality. In addition, there will be a question of value, including socially important values, especially in the systematic management of sustainable development.

Artykuł jest podsumowaniem badań prowadzonych nad filozofia zrównoważonego rozwoju przez autora tego opracowania w latach 2004-2007. Dotyczyły one genezy, przedmiotu, celu, systemu aksjologicznego, koncepcji edukacji i głównych problemów filozofii zrównoważonego rozwoju oraz zasady zrównoważonego rozwoju jako ontologicznej podstawy (w sensie ontologii bytu społecznego) współczesnej polityki ochrony środowiska. Szczegółowe wyniki były sukcesywnie przedstawiane w formie referatów i publikacji. Każde kolejne opracowanie prowadziło do wniosku o bezzasadności stanowiska przyjętego przez polskie środowisko filozoficzne, traktujące filozofie zrównoważonego rozwoju w kategoriach jeszcze jednej koncepcji ekofilozoficznej. Każdy następny rezultat badawczy coraz bardziej uzasadniał tezę o autonomicznym charakterze filozofii zrównoważonego rozwoju, ujawniając odmienny w stosunku do ekofilozofii charakter badań skoncentrowanych na zrównoważonym rozwoju jako współczesnej idei politycznej - idei jak najbardziej konkretnej, mającej swoja określoną genezę, wiadomych twórców i takie a nie inne zastosowanie w zakresie międzynarodowych i krajowych stosunków politycznych. Jako samodzielna subdyscyplina filozoficzna filozofia zrównoważonego rozwoju nie była jeszcze prezentowana w polskiej literaturze przedmiotu. Dlatego w tym opracowaniu nacisk został położony na charakterystyce tak rozumianej filozofii zrównoważonego rozwoju. Natomiast aspekty polemiczne, a zwłaszcza analityczno- porównawcze odnoszące się do ekofilozofii, nie są przedmiotem uwagi. Zostały poruszone we wspomnianych studiach cząstkowych i tam je odnajdzie zainteresowany czytelnik.

The article is the result of scientific research carried out by the author during the period 2004-2007. These studies touched on genesis, subject, aim, axiological system, the concept of education and the main problems of the philosophy of sustainable development and the sustainable development principle as an ontological base (in the sense of ontology of social being) for contemporary politics of protection of the environment. This research led the author to conclude that the standpoint generally accepted by Polish environmental philosophers (which views the philosophy of sustainable development as just another ecophilosophical concept) is unjustified. The philosophy of sustainable development is autonomous. This research concentrated on sustainable development as a contemporary political idea. This idea is concrete, with its own origin, and is known to be applied in international and national political relations. The philosophy of sustainable development is presented here for the first time in Polish literature as an independent philosophical subdiscipline.
