This paper discusses selected aspects of Innovative activity of companies in the raw material industry. The analysis included two countries from the group of Moderate Innovators (according to the Global Innovation Index, GII), namely Poland and Slovakia. A general comparison of the innovativeness level of Poland and Slovakia with the EU countries was conducted using indicators such as the Innovation-friendly Environment (IFE) or the Summary Innovation Index (SII). !e presented structure of expenditures on industrial innovation among the analysed countries revealed the absence of concentration in organizational and marketing innovations, which nowadays possesses significant importance. !e conclusion resulting from the study is that Poland and Slovakia should undoubtedly increase their innovative potential, i.a. in the use of their mineral raw materials as non-renewable resources, by identifying the sources of innovation, as well as the opportunities and threats associated with their implementation in raw material enterprises.

W artykule przedstawiono wybrane aspekty działalności innowacyjnej firm w branży surowcowej. Analiza objęła dwa kraje z grupy Moderate Innovators (według Global Innovation Index, GII), czyli Polskę i Słowację. Ogólne porównanie poziomu innowacyjności Polski i Słowacji z krajami UE przeprowadzono za pomocą wskaźników, takich jak Innovation-friendly Environment (IFE) czy Summary Innovation Index (SII). Przedstawiona struktura wydatków na innowacje przedsiębiorstw przemysłowych wśród analizowanych krajów ujawniła brak koncentracji na innowacjach organizacyjnych i marketingowych, które obecnie mają istotne znaczenie. Z przeprowadzonych badań wynika, że Polska i Słowacja powinny niewątpliwie zwiększyć swój potencjał innowacyjny m.in. w wykorzystaniu swoich surowców mineralnych jako zasobów nieodnawialnych, poprzez identyfikację źródeł innowacji oraz szans i zagrożeń związanych z ich wdrażaniem w przedsiębiorstwach surowcowych.

The paper presents analysis of changes innovation indexes for Poland in comparison to EU. The Summary Innovation Index (SII) and the Global Innovation Index for the period 2010-2016 were used for the research. The study is a continuation of the research undertaken in 2015. The article assumes that the position of Poland on the European Union countries is becoming weaker and any positive changes are selective. Statement of detailed analysis of changes was supplemented by concluding remarks partly explaining the reasons of such situation. The article's summary proposes further studies.

Innovative activity of enterprises in Poland is mostly generated by European funds that concern boosting European regions based on its significant resources and new technologies. Development of Polish enterprises in terms of innovations is based mainly on accumulating new products and new technologies that improve an organization and increase the sale of products and services. The following paper presents research findings that concern problems resulting from the implementation of innovations in Polish enterprises as compared with European results. There is presented European Innovation Index providing a comparative assessment of the innovation performance at the country level of the EU Member States and the Regional Innovation Scoreboard (RIS) that presents the results of innovative activity in Polish and European enterprises including regional data from the Community Innovation Survey (CIS).

Artykuł przedstawia szczegółowe zmiany wskaźnika innowacyjności Summary Innovation Index (SII) dla Polski w odniesieniu do wartości UE. Przeanalizowano zmiany trzech składowych wskaźnika innowacyjności w latach 2004-2007, 2008-2009 oraz 2010-2014. W okresach tych występowała inna metodyka wyznaczania wskaźnika SII. W okresie od 2004 do 2014 roku następowały istotne zmiany wartości wskaźników, wynikające z prowadzonej polityki innowacyjnej. Zestawienia szczegółowych zmian opatrzono wnioskami, odnoszącymi się do ich przyczyn oraz spodziewanych wyników w przyszłości.

The paper presents detailed analysis of changes Summary Innovation Index (SII) for Poland in comparison to EU. The changes of three main components of SII have been analysed in the following periods: 2004-2007, 2008-2009 and 2010-2014. In these periods there are some differences in methodology of determining index considering the measures using to construction the index. During the period of 2010 through 2014 important changes of the value of SII taken place. Statement of detailed analysis of changes was supplemented by concluding remarks explaining the reasons of such situation as well as expected results in the future.
