In the years 2020-2022, the authors conducted research on the activity concentration of 222 Rn in the groundwater of the eastern part of the Izera metamorphic unit. As a result, they found potentially medicinal radon waters in hornfelses of the eastern part of the Szklarska Poręba band. The value measured in one of the water samples appeared to be the highest activity concentration of 222Rn in groundwater of Poland so far - 3368 ±61 Bq/dm3. The authors also found that outflows of potentially medicinal radon waters account for almost 85.5% (47 out of 55) of all groundwater outflows in the study area. Thanks to the large amount of data obtained, the authors calculated a new value of the hydrogeochemical back-ground of 222 Rn in the groundwater of the Izera metamorphic unit. The background is currently 17-890 Bq/dm3. In Poland, higher values have only been reported of the Lądek-Śnieżnik metamorphic unit. The research results also open the way to the possible creation of a modern radon spa in Szklarska Poręba. It could operate in Biała Dolina on the basis of both previously found resources of radon waters of the Karkonosze granite and the radon waters forming within the eastern part of the Izera metamorphic unit.

The abandoned Klecza–Radomice gold mining area in the Kaczawskie Mountains is prospective for new occurrences of vein-type gold deposits. Research of sulphide ore samples from old mining wastes confirmed a rich gold abundance in this area. Chemical bulk-rock analyses proved a high content of gold (up to 60 ppm Au) and a common occurrence of microscopic gold (mainly electrum). The application of geophysical VLF surveys showed a number of linear anomalies indicating the possibility of the emergence of new ore veins between the areas of former mining exploitation. This area is very promising for gold prospecting and should be the subject of further geophysical research using the induced polarization method (IP), and verified by shallow prospecting drillings. Execution of this type of comprehensive exploration and research work would open a completely new stage of prospecting for primary gold deposits in the Sudetes.

Geochemical studies of CO2-rich therapeutic waters in the Sudetes have provided new data on a wide range of trace elements, going beyond standard chemical analyses of such waters. A consistent set of physicochemical data obtained using the same analytical methods was subjected to statistical analyses, including hierarchical clustering, factor analysis and nonparametric tests (Kruskal-Wallis, Tau Kendall), to reveal geochemical relationships between physicochemical and chemical parameters in the waters, and their relationships with the aquifer lithology. Distinct differences in the composition of waters found in crystalline rocks (mainly gneisses and mica schists) and sedimentary rocks were identified. The wide range of elements can be associated with the hydrolysis of silicate minerals, including alkali and alkali earth metals (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Be) and (mostly) transition elements (Fe, Mn, Zn, Co, W, Mg). Carbonate equilibria are the next important factor as it determines the aggressiveness of the water towards the minerals of aquifer rocks and affects the concentrations of numerous solutes. The probable common origin of chlorides, bromides and sulphates together with Li, Na, Sr may be related to the relict saline component of deep circulating waters, a hypothesis that requires further investigations.

Obszar Geoparku Kraina Wygasłych Wulkanów obejmuje część górską (sudecką) i przedgórską.

The area of Land of Extinct Volcanoes Geopark can be divided into a mountainous (located in the Sudetes Mountains) and a fore-mountain part. Within the former are the low-altitude range of the Kaczawskie Mountains and the hilly land of the Kaczawskie Foothills. Despite their low altitude, morphology is very diverse in terms of both appearance and origin, reflecting to a large extent the complex geological structure of the region. The most distinctive landforms include lithologically-controlled hills and ridges built of Permian and Cenozoic volcanic rocks, as well as cuesta landforms developed on Permian and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. Among basaltic hills many are necks. Variable rock resistance is also reflected by the occurrence of fluvial gorges. Further components of regional geodiversity are tors and crags, inherited periglacial landforms, landslides, karst phenomena, water gaps caused by drainage reorganization during Scandinavian ice-sheet decay, and anthropic landforms caused by mining activities. Numerous localities of geomorphological significance may play a role of geosites and are either already developed as local geotourist destinations or planned to be developed in the future.

We provide the first reports of some rare trace fossils from the middle Turonian (Upper Cretaceous) of the Sudety Mountains (SW Poland, Upper Nysa Kłodzka Graben, Długopole Górne Quarry). These include burrows ?Ancorichnus isp., Asterosoma cf. ludwigae Schlirf, 2000, Asterosoma isp., cf. Phycodes isp., Dactyloidites ottoi (Geinitz, 1849), Funalichnus strangulatus (Fritsch, 1883), Phycodes cf. palmatus (Hall, 1852), cf. Phycodes isp., Phycosiphon incertum Fischer-Ooster, 1858, ?Phycosiphon isp., Planolites beverleyensis (Billings, 1862) and borings Entobia isp. Some body fossils, bivalves ?Brachidontes sp., Lima canalifera Goldfuss, 1836, Pinna (Pinna) cretacea (Schlotheim, 1813) and Rhynchostreon suborbiculatum (Lamarck, 1801) are also reported. The trace fossil assemblage indicates a distal Skolithos ichnofacies and proximal Cruziana ichnofacies, which characterize a proximal and distal lower shoreface setting respectively. Sedimentation of the middle Turonian sandstones took place in a shallow epicontinental sea of normal salinity and a soft substrate, which was well-oxygenated under low-moderate hydrodynamic conditions. The presence of the oyster Rhynchostreon in the deposits studied suggests the influence of a warm Tethys Ocean.

A rare indium-bearing mineral from the stratiform Czerniawa Zdrój-Krobica Sn deposit in the Sudetes (NE part of the Bohemian Massif) has been recognized in the qualitative-quantitative chemical composition studies of sulphide-cassiterite samples by electron microprobe (EMPA). This indium-bearing mineral occurs in the form of separate hipautomorphic microscopic grains (diameter 5-20 μm) and as intergrowths and disseminations in chalcopyrite. Observations indicate that this phase crystallized with the main generation of chalcopyrite, sphalerite and also with a younger generation of cassiterite in the mineral succession. The chemical composition of this mineral is as follows: S – 29.38-30.77 wt.%, Zn – 29.76-34.02 wt.%, In – 17.52-19.40 wt.%, Cu – 9.05-10.75 wt.%, Fe – 7.76-8.7 wt.% and Sn – 0.03-0.1 wt.%. Its calculated chemical formula is: (Zn2.09In0.67Cu0.65Fe0.64Cd0.02)Σ4.07S4.0 and it is characterized by enrichment of Zn with simultaneous depletion in Cu and Sn relative to the ideal chemical composition of sakuraiite – the most similar mineral in terms of chemical composition. In the light of our new data, it should be considered as a yet unnamed Zn-In-Cu-Fe sulphide mineral. In addition, coexisting sulphide minerals – chalcopyrite (max. 1580 ppm of In) and sphalerite (max. 1640 ppm of In) were identified as indium carriers.

The specificity of the activities of the Lower Silesian Branch of the Polish Geological Institute - National Research Institute (PGI-NRI) is due to main factors: (1) mosaic-like geological structure of Lower Silesia, (2) the wealth of various mineral resources, (3) centuries-old mining traditions of the region. Initially, the researches included mainly geological cartography, subsequently expanding the scope of work to include regional (structural) geology and deposit geology. The contribution of applied geology, especially hydrogeology and environmental geology, has increased significantly in the previous decades. Three chapters present different periods of the Lower Silesian Branch of the PGI-NRI with its most important milestones for the Polish geology in the last seven decades. This division includes three periods: (1) years of development (1949-1989); (2) years of stagnation (1989-2013), and (3) years of disorganization (2014-2019). The period of intensification of geological researches carried out by the Lower Silesian Branch of the PGI-NRI lasted until the years of the so-called system transformation. During that period, the programs of deep boreholes were finished. In the 1990s, detailed cartographic works in Lower Silesia were completed. Acute shortage of new factographic material caused the necessity to analyze the archival material stored during previous decades at the Lower Silesian Branch. In 2014, it has practically decommissioned the regional branches, including the Lower Silesian Branch. Full centralization has led to the liquidation of both the branches’ independence and their previous focus on the implementation of tasks related to the specificity of a given region. In the forthcoming future, new challenges would depend on a proper organization chart of the PGI-NRI and the position of the regional branches in this scheme.

The aim of this article is to indicate the geotourism resources of the former mining basin in Leszczyna, located in the Kaczawskie Foothills, as an essential basis for creating a linear geotourism product. The nature-based resources, together with the cultural relics of the foregone mining activity of the Kaczawski region, constitute an interesting and rather unfamiliar research subject within the realm of tourism attractiveness in the geotourism development context. The conducted research resulted in presenting an outstanding geodiversity of the region with high educational value and prospectus potential to generate greater volumes of tourist traffic to the whole copper-ore area of the former Zechstein Sea, provided that they are linked by theme. In terms of methodology, the article applies the interview method carried out amongst the tourism managers of the examined sites, as well as the visitors’ opinions. It let the authors evaluate the geotourism resources and their potential in creating the geotourism product of a linear character. A set of suggestions to be considered in the development planning process for the examined open-air museum in Leszczyna is also presented. Summarizing, the objective behind the geotourism research undertaking the former mining infrastructure of the Kaczawskie Foothills area – the historical core of the copper mining activity in the region – is to protect both cultural and natural values of the Leszczyna area and its surroundings, as well as to promote it applying the assumptions of sustainable tourism development.

Volcanic geoheritage is emphasized as the main asset and distinctive characteristic of the Land of Extinct Volcanoes Geopark in the West Sudetes (SW Poland). However, the geoheritage values of the region are not limited to the legacy of ancient volcanism but include various other elements. This paper explores the contribution of geosites that expose sedimentary rocks of Cretaceous age and landforms developed upon these rocks. Six localities from the Geopark area, included in the comprehensive regional inventory of geosites, are presented. They represent natural and man-made sandstone outcrops and show, among others, lithological variations, small- and large-scale post-sedimentary deformation structures, landforms arising from differential weathering (rock shelters, honeycombs), boulder fields and a sandstone xenolith in volcanic rocks. Next, five localities from outside the Geopark, but still within the Pogórze Kaczawskie region, are described. Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of both groups is attempted, and the results show that, in general, geosites within the Geopark rank higher. However at least two from the other group also have significant geotourist potential. Finally, a brief comparative analysis with other parts of the Sudetes, where Cretaceous sedimentary rocks occur, is offered.

The Jawornik granitoids intrude, in vein-like form, a sequence of a polymetamorphic metavolcanic and metapelitic rocks of the Orlica-Śnieżnik Dome, Sudetes, Poland. This paper provides whole-rock geochemical data, sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) U-Pb zircon geochronological data as well as 40Ar-39Ar age determinations to constrain the genetic and temporal relationships of the different rock types forming these veins. Based on macroscopically visible features of the granitoids and their relationship with tectonic structures visible in the country rocks, four varieties of the Jawornik granitoids have been distinguished: amphibole- and biotite-bearing granites (HBG), biotite-bearing granites (BG), biotite- and muscovite-bearing granites (BMG) and muscovite-bearing granites (MG). The Jawornik granitoids as a whole show a limited but significant variation in major element chemical composition, with SiO2 ranging from 65 to 76 wt.% (average 69.16 wt.%, n = 24). They are subalkalic, peraluminous and calc-alkaline [average A/CNK = 1.07, average (Na2O + K2O) = 7.75, average (Fe2O3t/(Fe2O3t + MgO) = 0.59]. Close inspection of their geochemical parameters showed that the samples investigated can be subdivided into two groups. The first group, the HBG, BG, and BMG varieties, comprising most of the granitoids in the Złoty Stok-Skrzynka Tectonic Zone, were formed by melting of greywackes or/and amphibolites. The MG, belonging to the second group, were formed by partial melting of a more felsic source. The HBG yielded a zircon U-Pb age of 351 ±1.3 Ma and well-defined 40 Ar-39Ar plateau ages for hornblende (351.1 ±3.9 Ma) and coexisting biotite (349.6 ±3.8 Ma), indicating probably the oldest magmatic event in this region. Zircons from the MG, the youngest rock variety on the basis of their relationship with the tectonic structures in the host rocks yielded a U-Pb age of 336.3 ±2.4 Ma, though based on three points only. The biotites and muscovites from the BMG have 40 Ar-39Ar plateau ages of 344.1 ±4.7 Ma and 344.6 ±3.8 Ma, respectively. These data, in combination with already published isotopic ages, suggest that the Jawornik granitoids intruded host rocks of the Orlica-Śnieżnik Dome in three stages, at ~350, ~344 and ~335 Ma.

The occurrence of landforms induced by large-scale mass movements has never been reported from the SE part of the Wałbrzyskie Mts., despite detailed geological field mapping carried out twice in the 20th century. This paper provides the first description of landslide-affected slopes in this area, recognized through the combination of LiDAR DEM interpretation and field work. Fifteen landslides have been identified, ranging in size from less than 1 ha to 10.44 ha. Morphological signatures suggest that they represent various types, including minor translational slides, larger rotational complexes and valley-confined flowslides. Closed depressions typify several landslides. In a few instances the valley blocking by landslides can be inferred.

Lower Silesian Branch of the Polish Geological Institute (OD) was founded in 1949, 70years ago. It conducts geological and hydrogeological research as well as geological cartography in the area of Lower Silesia. In the 1970s until the end of the 1990s, during the period of the OD stabilization, the implementation of regional geological surveys started with the use of geophysical methods and deep drilling. These studies were conducted in the majority of tectonostratigraphic units - in the North Sudetic and Central Sudetic depressions, in the upper Nysa Kłodzka graben, in the Bardo structure and in the area of Foresudetic block. Geological and cartographic works on a scale of1 : 25,000 and 1 : 50,000 covered the entire area of Lower Silesia. In the mid-1990s, the edition of the Map of1 : 25,000 (134 sheets) was finalized, and the reambulation of Maps 1 : 50,000 (43 sheets) in 2009.

Abstract. The main task of research was to quantitatively and qualitatively identify rare and associated elements that occur within a cassiterite-sulphide mineralization zone hosted Precambrian - Lower Paleozoic metamorphic rochi in the Stara Kamienica schist belt making up the part of the Izera-Karhonosze Massif. Over 70 samples from archive boreholes and abandoned Sn-ore mines were examined using modern methods like portable pXRF, geochemical analysis (ICP-MS, WD-XRF, GF-AAS), polarizing microscopy, electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and scaning electron microscopy with EDS system (SEM-EDS). Preliminary results show interesting concentrations of associated elements such as Zn (max 0.56%), Pb (max 0.7%), Cu (max 0.33%), As (max 0.55%), and some rare elements like In, Re, Nb, Co, Bi, Pt, V, La and Ce.

This paper reports on the abundance of primordial radionuclides (40K,232K and 238U) in characteristic lithologies from the Sowie Mountains (SW Poland). In situ gamma-ray measurements were conducted at 12 localities hosting exposed augen gneiss, flaser gneiss, granulite, homophanized gneiss, hornblendite, layered gneiss, layered migmatite, migmatic gneiss, mylonitic gneiss and mylonitic granulite. The activity concentration of 40K varied from 180 Bq kg-1 (mylonitic granulite) to 845 Bq kg-1 (layered gneiss). The activity concentrations associated with 228Ac (232Th) varied from 10 Bq kg-1 (mylonitic granulite) to 53 Bq kg-1 (homophanized gneiss), while activity associated with 226Ra (238 U) varied from 9 Bq kg-1 (mylonitic granulite) to 43 Bq kg-1 (layered gneiss). An augen gneiss adjacent to the Intra-Sudetic Fault showed the highest combined Th + U activity (89 Bq kg-1). The average Th/U ratio (3.6) calculated for gneiss outcrops of the Sowie Mountains falls within the range reported for biotite gneiss (3.5-4). Subsurface outcrops from the Walim-Rzeczka underground complex did not give noticeably higher 238U activities. The results obtained forthe Sowie lithologies are compared with those obtained by similar methods for similar rocks as reported in literature sources.

A new ichnogenus and ichnospecies Rosarichnoides sudeticus is proposed for a large, exceptionally well-preserved crustacean burrow, which has been found in the Upper Cretaceous (Coniacian) Quadersandstein of the North Sudetic Synclinorium (Czaple quarry). Some of its specimens have been assigned to Thalassinoides saxonicus (Geinitz, 1842). It is unbranched, a characteristic rosary-shaped trace fossil, which consists of alternating chambers (swellings) and constrictions. The burrow is without any wall and usually lack ornamentation and has a passive fill. It should be included in ophiomorphid group sensu Bromley (1996). This unique finding resembles modern crustacean burrows produced by shrimps or crabs. Additionally, Thalassinoides paradoxicus (Woodward, 1830), the starfish Astropecten scupini Andert, 1934, the inoceramids Inoceramus kleini Müller, 1888 and Inoceramus sp. were found in the same sandstones. The trace fossils are indicative of the archetypal Skolithos ichnofacies that is typical of foreshore to middle shoreface settings.

The Lądek-Zdrój area has been known for several hundred years as a place of occurrence and use of hot springs. A hydrogeothermal reservoir occur there in specific geological conditions characteristic for Sudetes area. The reservoir is of a fracture type and occurs in artesian conditions. The development of the Health Resort caused the need for the better recognition of the hydrogeothermal reservoir and its geological vicinity. The carried out investigation program included, among others, a geophysical survey for the recognition of general geological conditions of the reservoir and its vicinity. The magnetic, gravity and surface geothermic methods were applied as well as VLF profiling, resistivity profiling and soundings and continuous magnetotelluric profiling. The review of the earlier geophysical surveys and reinterpretation of the magnetotelluric data including gravity data were made within the framework of the presented paper. The reinterpretation works a included review of data acquisition, the verification of procedures and results of data processing as well as verification and an extended interpretation of the sounding curves with use of inverse 2D modeling. As results of the survey tectonic zones were interpreted and temperature anomalies were discovered and, within a limited range, space recognition of the fractured aquifer horizons was made.

The article presents the results of the research on the variability of selected physicochemical properties and exploitation parameters of healing waters in Szczawno-Zdrój. Based on the results of physicochemical analyses it was observed that the mineralization of the Mieszko and Marta waters has gradually increased over the years (1963-2017). At the same time, a decrease in the amount of dissolved carbon dioxide in these waters was observed. In addition, there was no evidence of a significant relationship between well discharge and the CO2 content. Variations of CO2 concentration are so significant in the Młynarz intake that these waters should be classified as carbonate rather than CO2 - rich water. It has also been shown that the content of this gas in the Młynarz and Mieszko 14 intakes varies considerably depending on the discharge (rh = 0.7). The correlation occurs with less intensity in a smaller Marta and Dąbrówka intakes (rh = 0.3). A declining trend is also observed in the Rn content in the Marta intake. For this parameter there was no relationship with discharge changes. All analyzed springs are characterized by seasonal changes in their discharge. Generally, the variability of the analyzed parameters ranges from about 28% to a maximum of 43% relative to the respective mean values.

Znosko (1981a, b) first stated the important fact that the Sowie Góry "nappe” was lying on the rocks of the Middle Sudetic Ophiolite Complex. In the light of current geophysical and tectonic data, it still remains up-to-date. Both those articles have initiated a new look at the Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the Sudetes and its surroundings. This article presents an analysis ofpotential boundaries oflithostratigraphic terranes in the Sudetes and the Fore-Sudetic Block, confirmed by the waveforms of gravity horizontal gradients. Gravimetric modelling along the selected profile 3 makes it possible to present the subsurface geological structure. Metamorphic rocks of the Sowie Góry complex can probably reach a depth of almost 5 km on the Fore-Sudetic Block. Below them are mafic and ultramafic rocks, reaching a depth of up to 12 km, which belong to the Middle-Sudetic Ophiolite Complex. The kinematic data from the Sowie Góry metamorphic complex indicate displacement with the top-to-SW and to-S, as in the Middle-Sudetic Ophiolite Complex. Controversy over the origin and the geotectonic environment of the Early Ordovician protolith of the Sowie Góry gneisses, which are probably a magma product of arc-type magmatism formed above a subduction zone of the Tornquist Ocean. The Sowie Góry terrane can be considered as a relic of the Early Ordovician Paleozoic magma arc (the so-called peri-Baltic arc). The Sowie Góry terrane was moved towards the SW and S on obducted dismembered fragments of ophiolite sequences after closing the Rheic Ocean during the Eo-Variscan orogenesis.
