Many researchers emphasize the fact that the profession of a soldier is burdened with a significant stress, which requires individuals to have specific predispositions. The effectiveness of soldiers’ actions depends on many factors, which are an important research areas in terms of health, the psychology of stress and personal security. The quality of professional performance is influenced by external factors as well as and personality. An important requirement is resistance to stress-inducing stimuli and the ability to use adaptive ways of coping with stress. Increased mental resilience enables the individual to function better under pressure in a rapidly changing environment – hence the need for individuals to be aware of their ability to cope with stress. The article presents the process of selection, preparation and education of soldiers for military action.

Wielu badaczy podkreśla fakt, że zawód żołnierza jest obciążony znacznym natężeniem sytuacji stresowych, co wymaga od jednostki określonych predyspozycji. Sprawność działania żołnierzy zależy od wielu czynników będących ważnym obszarem badawczym w zakresie nauk o zdrowiu, psychologii stresu czy bezpieczeństwa personalnego. Na jakość realizacji zadań służbowych wpływają czynniki zewnętrzne oraz osobowościowe. Istotnym wymogiem ich jest odporność na bodźce stresogenne i umiejętność stosowania adaptacyjnych sposobów radzenia sobie ze stresem. Zwiększona wytrzymałość psychiczna umożliwia jednostce lepsze funkcjonowanie pod presją w dynamicznie zmieniającym się środowisku. Stąd konieczność, by jednostka była świadoma swych umiejętności i kompetencji odpowiedzialnych za proces radzenia sobie ze stresem. W artykule przedstawiono proces selekcji, przygotowania i edukacji żołnierzy do działania w warunkach służby.

Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu ukazanie, że kapitał kulturowy żołnierzy jest znacznikiem właściwego dla danego korpusu wojskowego gustu, a także stanowi podstawę klasowego podziału, a oficerom zapewnia wyróżnienie społeczne - dystynkcję. Aby osiągnąć założony cel, wykorzystano metodę przeglądu literatury. Artykuł składa się z dwóch części, z których pierwsza opisuje przejawy rytuałów w wojskowej rzeczywistości, natomiast część druga poświęcona jest ceremoniałowi wojskowemu jako sposobowi nadawania żołnierzom habitusu.

Pierre Bourdieu's theory of social and cultural production reveals mechanisms and structures: social classes and symbolic fields, and habitus. According to this author's assumptions, the army is a symbolic field. Within this autonomous social space governed by specific rules, there is social symbolic competition for various forms of cultural capital: embodied capital (interests, skills, knowledge, body posture, gestures, language, appearance, appearance, hygiene, diet, sport), objectified (furnishings, interior design and clothing) and institutionalized (completed stages of education confirmed in the form of diplomas) . It is cultural capital that is the marker of taste appropriate for a given social group, it is the basis of class division, and it provides officers with a social distinction - distinction.

Military History has three primary audiences: the general public, academe, and the armed forces – each has its own beliefs regarding the purpose and utility of the military past. Recognising the value of a war history for South Africa, Jan Smuts created the Union War Histories section in 1941. Yet the men appointed to write this history realised that they would never be able to satisfy all three competing readerships. This paper examines the research production of the Union War Histories section as well as the official and public response to their work, which is placed within a wider historiographical process. The notion of a historiographical progression – of an intersecting chain of counter narratives – is posited: accounts by journalists, official historians, personal narrators and regimental historians, leading to a post-participant historiography. This is a progression that seems to hold true for South Africa’s other wars, and indeed the wars of other countries.

Artykuł podejmuje zagadnienie znaczenia morale żołnierzy w naszej armii. Autorka przedstawia w nim różne definicje pojęcia morale, którego nie da się jednoznacznie określić. Morale to umysłowy, emocjonalny i duchowy stan indywidualny, ale również wartość, która pozwala żołnierzom działać w najtrudniejszych warunkach i wykazywać odwagę w sytuacjach zmęczenia i niebezpieczeństwa. O dobrym morale świadczy wysoki poziom następujących czynników: pewności siebie, odwagi, dyscypliny, koleżeństwa, odpowiedzialności, wiary w słuszność realizacji postawionych celów. Niskie morale charakteryzują się natomiast biernością, agresją, obojętnością, brakiem współodpowiedzialności za wykonanie zadania. Istota morale tkwi w identyfikacji z własnym państwem, celach wojny, kulturze środowiska wojskowego, cechach osobowości żołnierzy i warunkach materialnych. Wysokie morale stymulują, dynamizują i aktywizują żołnierzy do osiągnięcia celów i realizacji zadań. Należy zwrócić szczególną uwagę na fakt, iż morale zawsze było, jest i będzie niematerialnym czynnikiem przewagi nad przeciwnikiem na polu walki.

The article comes out with the question about the soldiers’ morale in the Polish Army. The author shows different ways to express the concept of the morale which is not possible to explain unambiguously. The morale is a mental, emotional, spiritual, individual condition. It is also a value which supports soldiers, especially during the hardest situations, making them brave enough to hand with exhaust and danger. A good morale consists of: self-confidence, courage, discipline, friendship, responsibility. It is, as well, the faith that the achieving goal is right. Passivity, aggression, immunity, the lack of responsibility for tasks which were supposed to be done- all of those characterizes the low morale. The idea of morale we can find in the identification with own country, aims of a war, character of army’s air, personal attitudes of soldiers and the financial conditions. The high morale stimulates, dynamises, activates soldiers to reach the goals and to execute tasks. It is worth remembering that the morale always was, is and will be an insubstantial factor of dominance over the enemy on the battlefield.

Specyfika służby wojskowej powoduje, że dostarczenie żołnierzom pożywienia, które pokryje ich zapotrzebowanie energetyczne i odżywcze, a także będzie odpowiednio wysokiej jakości, jest zadaniem wymagającym pracy na wielu płaszczyznach jednocześnie. Aby Siły Zbrojne RP mogły swoje zadania wykonywać efektywnie, należy ze szczególną starannością planować proces żywienia, zarówno w warunkach polowych jak i garnizonowych. Wieloetapowy proces projektowania racji żywnościowych zapewnia uzyskanie ich wysokiej jakości i użyteczności.

The complexity of the human body, makes that its proper functioning depends on many factors, including the proper nutrition. The specificity of military service causes that delivery of high quality food to the soldiers is a task that requires work on many levels equally. For effectively handling military action it is necessary to plan process of feeding with special care, both in field and garrison conditions. This multistage process of designing food rations guarantee their high quality and usefulness.

Artykuł składa się z trzech części. W pierwszym rozdziale omówiono pojęcie bezpieczeństwa oraz scharakteryzowano rodzaje współczesnych operacji wojskowych, w których biorą udział między innymi żołnierze Polskich Kontyngentów Wojskowych. Następnie określono zagrożenia jakie mogą spotkać żołnierzy biorących udział w tych operacjach. W kolejnym rozdziale rozważono problem niedostosowania systemów uzbrojenia do konkretnych zadań realizowanych w ramach operacji wojskowej oraz podkreślono jak ważne dla bezpieczeństwa żołnierzy jest odpowiednie przygotowanie samego sprzętu i ludzi do charakteru prowadzonych działań, szczególnie jeśli te zadania realizowane są daleko od granic kraju. W ostatnim rozdziale artykułu przybliżono problem modernizacji technicznej polskich Sił Zbrojnych oraz przedstawiono kierunki tego rozwoju zawarte w planie modernizacji na lata 2014-2022.

The article consists of three parts. The first chapter discusses the concept of 'security' and characterized types of contemporary military operations. Then dangers were identified that can meet soldiers involved in these operations. In the next chapter, the problems of inadequacy of weapon systems for specific tasks of military operations were assumed. Apart from that, the importance of appropriate preparation of weapon systems and personal was stressed for certain operation, especially when these tasks are carried out far from the borders of the country. In the last chapter, issues of technical modernization of the Polish Armed Forces were presented and directions of further developments contained in the modernization plan for the years 2014-2022.

Celem autora niniejszego artykułu jest próba określenia roli kultury fizycznej w życiu żołnierza oraz przedstawienie polskiej myśli w zakresie kultury fizycznej. W wykonywanie zawodu żołnierza wpisany jest wysiłek fizyczny, permanentny ruch oraz stres. Tylko żołnierz odpowiednio, ,,ukształtowany" jest w stanie zapewnić sobie zdrowie, sprawność, tężyznę fizyczną na długie lata służby. Dlatego też, wojskowa kultura fizyczna spełnia cele doraźne i perspektywiczne wychowania w kulturze i do kultury fizycznej. Wychowanie fizyczne spełnia wiele ról. Stymuluje rozwój fizyczny i psychiczny, przygotowuje do dbania o prawność fizyczną i zdrowie. Stanowi fundament kultury fizycznej, będąc jednocześnie integralnym składnikiem systemu edukacji. Świadome i zamierzone działania prosomatyczne i prozdrowotne są szczególnie ważne w przypadku wykonywania zawodu żołnierza. Wysoka sprawność fizyczna żołnierzy, nawet gdy nie przynosi bezpośrednich efektów użytkowych w czasie pokoju, stanowi istotny element ich osobowości. Wyróżnia żołnierzy w społeczeństwie, staje ię wyrazem ich stylu życia, oznaką kultury. Proces edukacji fizycznej żołnierza zwiększa jego wartość w całościowym przygotowaniu do wykonywania tego zawodu.

The purpose of this paper is to determine the role of physical culture in the soldier's life as well as to present Polish thought in the field of physical culture. The soldier's profession is connected with permanent physical movement and stress. Only well-prepared soldiers are able to provide the health, fitness and physical prowess for years of service. Therefore, today's military physical education meet both short-term and long-term goals that is education in culture and for culture. Physical education has many roles. It stimulates physical and mental development of soldiers, thus preparing them to take care of their physical fitness and health. It is the foundation of physical culture, being simultaneously an integral part of the education system. The deliberate and intentional physical training as well as taking care of health are particularly important in the case of the professional soldier. Soldiers' high physical fitness, even if it brings no direct effects in peacetime, is an important part of their personality. It distinguishes military people in society and becomes an expression of their lifestyle, a sign of their culture.

The article presents indispensable features and abilities which professional armed forces should possess in order to face the probable threats to the global security environment of 21 st century. It predicts the character and course of future conflicts. It also emphasises the fact that the future battlefield will be very complex, filled with state-of-the-art technologies and technological innovations. Moreover, it presents the future commander, soldier, as a professional of the highest level, characterized by extraordinary and special features. lt describes the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland until 2030, a as modem organization, capable of solving social-military conflicts within the national and allied structures.

Współczesne wojny w większości przypadków nie są już toczone wyłącznie przez państwa. Stroną są również siły identyfikujące się etnicznie, narodowo czy religijnie. W takiej rzeczywistości, klasyczny podział na żołnierzy i cywili traci na znaczeniu. Każdy członek społeczeństwa jest bowiem realnie lub potencjalnie żołnierzem. Podważa to ostatecznie znaczenie umundurowania, jako znacznika osoby walczącej na polu walki. Żołnierze-cywile, jako członkowie sił nieregularnych, preferują walkę, w której istotną rolę odgrywa czas, przestrzeń, legitymacja do sprawowania władzy i wsparcie społeczne. Głównym narzędziem sił nieregularnych w tej walce jest broń indywidualna, zdolna zniszczyć nawet zaawansowane technologicznie środki bojowe. Przyjęta przez siły nieregularne filozofia walki byłaby nieskuteczna, gdyby nie ścisłe przestrzegania określonych zasad.

In the majority of cases, modern wars are not waged exclusively by states. Groups identifying themselves by ethnicity, nationality or religion can also act as parties in a conflict. In such circumstances a classic division into soldiers and civilians loses its relevance, as every member of the society is a soldier - realistically or potentially. This in turn undermines the meaning of uniforms as indicators of the identity of people participating in combat. The civilian-soldiers who are members of irregular forces prefer warfare that is conditioned by the aspects of time, space, authority legitimization and social support. The main weapons of irregular forces in this type of warfare are personal arms capable of destroying even technologically advanced armament. The warfare philosophy adopted by irregular forces would be unsuccessful without a strict observance of the established rules.

The author analyses armed forces as an instrument of the policy of the state that must face fundamental revisions, which influence the global political and military situation. Their tasks should be performed according to modern training systems based on professionalization. Having entered NATO and the European Union’s structures, Poland committed itself to undertake alliance and coalition tasks connected, among others, with peace making, stabilization missions after conflicts within the framework of crisis response and peace support operations. Changes should be made in military training and education so that the professional army can function effectively. The author compares the profession of a career soldier to a doctor or a teacher. He proves that all these areas need professional education and practice in order to meet the requirements of the service. Professional armed forces are an organization which involves a professional army fully prepared to conduct its tasks due to the Constitution of the Republic of Poland. The Polish Armed Forces’ key task, as regards our integration with NATO, is to achieve a full capability to cooperate with other armed forces of the Alliance. The analysis to carry out changes in the armed forces shows that the current way of professionalization will help meet the expectations and military standards of the 21st century.

The article is a summary of research on this problem. It presents selected fragments of the female soldier's picture in the Polish press in the period of 1990-2003 which includes the self-presentation of female soldiers, their perception of the armed forces and males’ opinions concerning positive and negative aspects of women serving in the army in peace and wartime.
