Bark beetle outbreaks and tree mortality patterns should be better understood to control outbreak impacts. We investigated landscape-level patterns of Norway spruce mortality caused by Ips typographus outbreaks across three periods from 1999–2012 in Tatra National Park (Poland) using high-resolution aerial orthophotos and satellite imagery. Shifts in tree mortality related to elevation, slope, and solar equinox radiation were analyzed with ANOVAs (Tukey's HSD tests). Boosted regression trees were employed to assess the forecasting effectiveness of these variables related to mortality period. Spruce mortality severity increased significantly across time in both managed and unmanaged forests. Management activities did not effectively reduce spruce mortality severity. Mortality severity increased significantly at higher elevations over time, while slope and radiation trends varied. Elevation and radiation were the best forecasters of mortality period, exhibiting moderate predictive ability. Beetle-induced spruce mortality increased significantly in Tatra National Park from 1999–2012, particularly at high elevations. Management strategies aimed at minimizing spruce mortality have been ineffective.

W monografii przedstawiono budowę mikroskopową i makroskopową drewna sosny zwyczajnej Pinus sylvestris L., pochodzącej z czterech wybranych krain przyrodniczoleśnych Polski: Kraina A - Mazowiecko – Podlaska Kraina Przyrodniczo – Leśna (Nadleśnictwo Garwolin), Kraina B - Małopolska Kraina Przyrodniczo – Leśna (Nadleśnictwo Przedbórz), Kraina C - Śląska Kraina Przyrodniczo – Leśna (Nadleśnictwo Kędzierzyn Koźle), Kraina D - Karpacka Kraina Przyrodniczo – Leśna (Nadleśnictwo Piwniczna). Ukazano strukturę mikroskopową jodły pospolitej Abies alba Mill, modrzewia europejskiego Larix decidua Mill. pochodzącego z zabytkowego obiektu wybudowanego w 1860 r., sosny zwyczajnej Pinus sylvestris L. poddanej 5 - letnim wpływom atmosferycznym oraz degradacji biologicznej. Określono przyrosty roczne, biel i twardziel, pęcherze i wycieki żywiczne oraz promienie łykodrzewne. Zaprezentowano właściwości rozpoznawcze wybranych rodzajów drewna iglastego, w szczególności zabarwienie twardzieli, szerokość przyrostów rocznych, udział bielu i twardzieli, obecność przewodów żywicznych, przejście z drewna wczesnego do późnego czy strukturę sęka. Dodatkowo scharakteryzowano takie gatunki drzew, jak sosna zwyczajna Pinus sylvestris L., świerk pospolity Picea abies Karst., modrzew europejski Larix decidua Mill., jodła pospolita Abies alba Mill., daglezja zielona Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco [1-2].

Wood is a basic raw material for paper and pulp industry, and also in power generation. Wood supplies are provided by forests. In Poland, the area of forests continues to increase annually. Since 1945, forest cover has grown by 8.4%. The increment results from afforestation of the land with former agricultural use, and of uncultivated land [1]. In the monograph, the micro- and macroscopic structure of wood from pine Pinus sylvestris L. was presented. The wood originated from four selected nature-forest areas of Poland, namely Area A - Mazowiecko – Podlaska Nature-Forest Area (Garwolin Forest Inspectorate), Area B - Małopolska Nature-Forest Area (Przedbórz Forest Inspectorate), Area C - Śląska Nature-Forest Area (Kędzierzyn Koźle Forest Inspectorate), Area D - Karpacka Nature-Forest Area (Piwniczna Forest Inspectorate). Wood microscopic structure analysis was performed for the following conifer species: silver fir Abies alba Mill, European larch Larix decidua Mill., the wood of which was obtained from a historical structure built in 1860, and pine Pinus sylvestris L., the wood of which was exposed to atmospheric conditions and biological degradation for a 5 – year period. The following features were specified: annual rings, sapwood and heartwood, resin pockets and leaks, and also medullary rays. The distinctive properties of selected coniferous wood species were presented, including heartwood colour, the width of annual rings, sapwood and heartwood content, the occurrence of resin ducts, transition from earlywood to latewood, and also knot structure. Additionally, the characteristics of the wood of the following species were provided: pine Pinus sylvestris L., spruce Picea abies Karst., European larch Larix decidua Mill., silver fir Abies alba Mill., Douglas fir Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco [1-2].

In this paper, we describe the assessment of Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.) trees health by the use of low-altitude aerial photos taken in the first half of June, so during the growth of trees and extensive changes in their crowns. Another differentiating factor is the composition of the stand, where there are trees grown from seeds collected from several remote locations. Images were taken in RGB and IR ranges and processed to orthomosaic, which was used to assess the condition of the trees. The aim of the study was to evaluate the possibility to acquire on this way reliable information about the condition of the trees, by comparison with the results of field research conducted in parallel. The differences between the assessments of trees damage in the field and on the basis of ortomosaics are not large, in all cases less than half a degree. The differences in results from field observations, and the picture are slightly greater in the case of trees observed on the discolored parts of orthomosaics. It is noticeable that the observer has difficulty in these conditions in the appropriate reading of degrees of damage. Although we used images taken in the unfavorable season (intensive development of trees) and related to the forest made up of trees of different origin, which is expressed at different rates of phenological events, the obtained results are with high compliance between field assessment and on the basis of the image. In the case of trees located outside the discoloration assessment results achieved on the basis of pictures were similar to the degree of damage reconized in field.

The objective of this study was to analyse the diversity of pine and spruce bog forests on the domes of Carpathian raised bogs located in the Upper San River Valley. In order to determine the present species composition, 59 phytosociological relevés were performed (32 within spruce forests, and 27 in pine forests). For all relevés, the Shannon-Wiener index, evenness index and mean Ellenberg indicator values were calculated. Detrended correspondence analysis was conducted in order to determine the degree of similarity between distinct units of vegetation and to identify the main environmental gradients that have an impact on species composition. The results revealed considerable similarities between the ground vegetation of both spruce and pine forests growing on peat substrate. Within pine forests there was a greater proportion of certain plant species characteristic of raised bogs, and plants typical of bog coniferous forests. The ground flora of spruce forests was more diverse. Although spruce forests predominantly contained species typical of raised bogs, there was also a group in which Molinia caerulea predominated. Ellenberg indicator values typical of pine forests lay within ranges that were characteristic of spruce forests, but pine forests occupy more humid, more acidic and poorer habitats than most patches of spruce forests. Both spruce and pine bog forests were developed as a result of the colonization of open bogs, but the time-scale and rate of intensity were different. Palaeobotanical and historical data indicate that the Scots pine first reappeared on the domes of raised bogs in the first half of the 20th century. The concept that the spruce forests are older than those of pine is supported by their greater habitat diversity. Conversely, the younger age of pine forests is confirmed by their low habitat diversity, and greater proportion of photophilous raised-bog species.

Celem badań było określenie zmienności czasowej osuwania i stwierdzenie różnic w aktywności poszczególnych części stoku osuwiskowego. Zastosowano metody dendrochronologiczne: dla 60 świerków pospolitych analizowano dekoncentryczność przyrostów rocznych. Największą dynamikę osuwania stwierdzono w latach: 1975, 1993, 1985, 1968–1969, 1995. Liczba zaburzeń wzrostu radialnego drewna świadczących o osuwaniu w poszczególnych latach dobrze odpowiada przebiegowi sum opadów półrocza letniego (np. osuwanie i opady w latach: 1968, 1972, 1975, 1977, 1985, 2010) oraz w mniejszym stopniu zimowego.

The aim of the study was to determine the temporal variability o landsliding and differences in the activity of individual part of a small landslide. Dendrochronological methods have been applied: tree-ring eccentricity was analysed for 60 Norway spruce trees. The most dynamic landsliding occurred in: 1975, 1993, 1985, 1968–1969 and 1995. The number of wood-growth disturbances recording landsliding in particular years matches well with precipitation totals for summer half-years (e.g. landsliding and precipitation in: 1968, 1972, 1975, 1977, 1985, 2010) and to the smaller degree with totals for winter half-years (e.g. 1961). Results indicate uneven activity of particular landslide sections. The movement in particular parts of the landslide is triggered during various precipitation events or due to other factors (e.g. 1992–1993 earthquakes with epicentres in Beskid Sądecki Mts).

The paper presents a comparison of the density of seven provenances of spruce trees, grown on an experimental plot located at Siemianice Forest Experimental Station. This plot is a unique research area on which observations concerning the growth of spruce trees of different provenances have been conducted for 41 years. The conditions in which the trees grow are very similar and it may be assumed that provenance is the element differentiating growth and wood properties. Trees growing on this plot have reached such large dimensions that it was possible to collect experimental material in the form of blocks, from which wood samples for further tests were obtained. Analyses were conducted on 651 samples collected from spruce trees of 7 provenances (Orawa, Międzygórze, Nowe Ramuki, Istebna Bukowiec, Kartuzy, Zwierzyniec 281B, Zwierzyniec Lubelski). The results indicated that wood of each individual provenance differed significantly in terms of the analysed trait. It was found that wood coming from Zwierzyniec Lubelski had the greatest values of basic density, while the lowest values were recorded for the Orawa provenance. Moreover, the examined provenances were divided into four groups, thus creating a ranking list of provenances in terms of the basic wood density of Norway spruce.

Activity of soil enzymes is considered as a good indicator of natural and anthropogenic disturbances of the functioning of the soil. Heavy metals can inhibit the activity of enzymes in varying degree, depending on soil properties such as content of clay materials, organic matter and pH of soil solution. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of physicochemical and biological properties of soils on the condition of Norway spruce stands in Silesian Beskid. In the soil samples enzymatic activity of four enzymes (alkaline and acid phosphatase, dehydrogenase and urease) and concentration of three selected heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Zn) and sulfur were determined. The analyses showed no reduced activity of investigated enzymes. Presumably, despite of low pH values of the soil, organic matter contained in the soil is able to effectively bind heavy metal ions, limiting their cycling in the environment. It can be concluded that the condition of spruce stands in Silesian Beskid is not affected by the soil contamination.

Highly decayed coarse woody debris (CWD) is an important seedbed substrate in various forest ecosystems. In Europe, this particularly holds for spruce forests on shallow soils with insufficient water-holding capacity. Effect of Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.) seedlings cover on CWD moisture was investigated under field conditions. Our hypothesis was that if CWD provides moisture benefits for successful recruitment and further growth of spruce seedlings, CWD water content should be considerably reduced in nurse logs compared to logs without spruce seedlings. The study was conducted in a natural subalpine Norway spruce forest located in the massif of Poľana (1351 m a.s.l.), Western Carpathians, Slovakia. Six downed spruce logs in advanced stage of decay were selected in the forest, three of them covered with advanced seedlings and the remaining logs devoid of them. CWD moisture was measured by Time Domain Reflectometry during two vegetation periods (2007, 2008). Average difference between CWD moisture in logs with and without advanced seedlings was –0.09 and thus significant at P = 0.02 according to t-test. Based on the tested assumption that throughfall was comparable for both groups of logs, the assessed evaporation of the seedlings cover reached ca 0.73 mm day-1 m-2 of CWD surface (in the horizontal projection) during one vegetation period. This rate is generally comparable with seedlings growing in soils under unconstrained moisture conditions. The role of nurse logs in the recruitment of spruce seedlings is therefore mainly important on soils with limited water-holding capacity.

Dominant fungi, especially primary decayers, probably influence other fungi growing together with them. Fomitopsis pinicola is one of the important primary decayers, and it has been shown that several other species regularly co-occur together with it. We asked whether the presence of common species (especially F. pinicola) affects the species richness and composition of other fungi. This study was conducted in an old-growth mountain spruce forest in the Bohemian Forest, Czech Republic. We surveyed logs on the ground for sporocarps of fungi in three successive years. Characteristics of logs such as dimensions, stage of decay and the cause of tree death (wind, competition, butt rot, bark beetles and unascertained) were recorded. F. pinicola was abundant mostly on logs that originated from trees infested by bark beetles. Analysis of covariance with the volume of logs and decay stage as covariables showed significant effect of these covariables and of F. pinicola presence on species numbers – logs in middle decay stages with the sporocarps of F. pinicola had more species than other logs. Based on Canonical Correspondence Analysis with volume, decay stage and the cause of tree death as covariables, the species composition on logs was also influenced by F. pinicola. We found such statistical effects in several other species. Redlisted species Antrodiella citrinella and Camarops tubulina co-occurred with F. pinicola.

The aim of this study is to determine the variation in the quality structure of spruce timber and to analyze the frequency of occurrence of trees with defects, including the generic structure of defects in natural stands (forest reserves) and stands serving economic functions. The study was conducted on 20 experimental plots located within the Sudeten and Carpathian Mountains, of which 10 were located in the area of nature reserves or national parks while the other 10 - in the managed stands (table 1). Each experimental plot constituted 5 or 10% of the area of the whole stand, depending on its differentiation. The following tasks were performed on the experimental plots: measurement of the breast-height diameter of each tree with a thickness of at least 7 cm, measurement of the height of each tree, quality assessment of the first section of the tree stem from the base along with its quality-dimensional class or group [Zasady... 2003], recording the types and varieties of wood defects. Analyzing the research material obtained, the stem of each tree growing on an experimental plot underwent simulated division into sections corresponding to the quality-dimensional classes and groups which could theoretically be distinguished over the whole length of a stem up to its top. The starting point was the quality-dimensional class noted in the butt section of the stem (section 1) during the field research. The above tasks included the use of the Radwański tables [Roczniki... 1956], which allowed the determination of the size and volume of each section of the spruce stems on the basis of the breast-height diameter and the tree height; wood defects, noted in field, were also taken into account. The material obtained was divided into 2 groups: data from the reserves and from the managed stands. For the material grouped in this way, juxtapositions were made of the average volumes of individual stem sections in quality-dimensional classes and groups of timber and the percentages of particular timber classes and groups in the two stand types were calculated. The material was also analyzed taking into account the generic structure of defects (percentages of individual trees with particular wood defects in a given group of stands). The next stage consisted in statistical analyses using the U-Mann-Whitney test, examining the significance of differences in the quality-dimensional structure of timber and the share of trees with defects between the two groups of stands. The research showed that trees growing in natural stands (reserves) are characterized by a greater average height, thickness (d1.3 and d1/2) and volume of individual trees as compared with the same characteristics of spruce trees in managed stands (table 2). Also, the average volume of the large-sized timber sections (WA, WB1, WB, WC, WD) of individual trees from natural forests dominated the volume of tree sections in managed stands. Despite that fact, the volume/ha of natural forest stands was lower (355.91 m3/ha) than of managed stands (380.27 m3/ha). By analyzing the quality-dimensional structure of the examined timber it was found that the proportion of higher quality timber classes (WA and WB) prevails in the managed stands, resulting in a lower share of the WC class of timber (fig. 1). Only the share of WB1 class timber prevails in natural stands. The managed stands also showed a larger share of medium-sized timber (groups S1, S2 and S4) as compared to natural forests. The U-Mann-Whitney statistical test, however, did not show statistically significant differences in the timber quality structure between the natural and the managed stands (U = 49.00, Z = -0.0378, p = 0.9698). Subsequently, it was found that the proportion of trees with quality reduced by defects was higher in the natural stands (70.38%) as compared to the managed stands (67.13%). The main defect, decisive for timber quality, were knots (in both groups of stands). The share of trees with that defect was greater in the stands of natural origin (fig. 2). In those stands, there was also a larger share of trees with rot (external and internal rot) and unilateral curvatures. The managed stands demonstrated a share of injuries (overgrown and open ones) as well as bilateral and multilateral curvatures that was higher than in the natural stands. In conclusion, it should be emphasized that in the managed stands within the research area a higher quality of spruce timber as well as higher volume/ha were noted as compared to the natural stands (forest reserves). Stands in forest reserves are generally located at higher altitudes in the mountains or hardly accessible areas; their main purpose are protective functions, they also serve the purposes of research. In the stands situated in forest reserves there was reported, in comparison with the managed stands, a higher incidence of trees with a large number of knots and highly affected by rot. A frequent presence of such defects is inevitable there because this group does not undergo any management cuts that would improve timber quality. Moreover, the presence of rot is due to the advanced age of these stands. At the same time, what is disturbing is a large share of trees with injuries in the managed stands. Given that spruce is very sensitive to mechanical damage of the stem, resulting in rapid development of rot, caution is recommended during forest management work and harvesting in spruce stands.

The goal of the paper was to define the phytoindication ability of selected plant species in the conditions of the impact of traffic on the environment. The contents of the following trace metals were analysed: Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn in three plant species: moss Pleurozium schreberi (Brid.) Mitt., dandelion Taraxacum officianale F. H. Wigg. and in Norway spruce Picea abies (L.) H. Karst alongside the communication route Kraków-Zakopane. The plant samples (green parts of moss, leaves of dandelion, and two year old needles of common spruce) were taken in seven transects perpendicular to the road in the following distances from the edge of the road: 5 m, 10 m, 50 m and 100 m. The moss Pleurozium schreberi turned out to be the best indicator among the tested plant species because it accumulated trace metals in the highest concentrations. In the leaves of the dandelion lower concentrations of metals were found, while the lowest ones were in the needles of the spruce.

The importance of the use of waxes in the wood industry has been increasing, particularly in Europe, since consumers, due to their increased environmental awareness, avoid using biocidally treated wood and wood from tropical forests. In this research two water-repellent emulsions in various concentrations were used: polyethylene and oxidised polyethylene wax emulsion. The performance of wax treated Norway spruce (Picea abies) and beech (Fagus sylvatica) wood was tested in two sorption experiments: conditioning in high relative air humidity (vapour diffusion) and non-continuous dipping (liquid flow). The sorption properties of oven and vacuum dried impregnated specimens were determined. During conditioning, wax treated Norway spruce specimens, vacuum and oven dried, had the same moisture content as control specimens; while treated vacuum dried beech had up to 25% lower moisture content than the parallel control specimens. An even higher difference was evident in volume changes of vacuum and oven dried beech specimens during the sorption test.

W badaniach wykorzystano dwie emulsje wodoodporne o różnych stężeniach: polietylenową emulsję woskową i jej utlenioną wersję. Właściwości impregnowanego woskiem drewna świerka pospolitego (Picea abies) i drewna buka (Fagus sylvatica) zostały przebadane w trakcie badań sorpcji: klimatyzowania w warunkach wysokiej wilgotności względnej powietrza (dyfuzja pary) i przerywanego zanurzania (przepływ cieczy). Określono właściwości sorpcyjne impregnowanych próbek suszonych w suszarce i próżniowo. Podczas klimatyzowania próbki świerka pospolitego impregnowanego woskiem, suszone w suszarce i próżniowo, wykazały tę samą wilgotność, co próbki kontrolne. Impregnowane, wysuszone próżniowo drewno buka osiągnęło wilgotność do 25% niższą niż próbki kontrolne. Jeszcze większa różnica była widoczna w trakcie badania sorpcji w zakresie zmian objętości próbek buka suszonych w suszarce i próżniowo.

Cryptic green caterpillars of Thera variata and Pungeleria capreolaria and brown caterpillars of Peribatodes secundarius, Eupithecia tantillaria and Hylaea fasciaria (Lepidoptera, Geometridae) were studied. The question was if these caterpillars could improve the effect of their crypticity by selecting for their diurnal roosting a specific place on their host plant - Norway spruce (Picea abies). We observed the preference for background type, preference for upper or undersurface, and preference for illuminated or shaded part of background. We found that the caterpillars chose special sites on their host plants. Very similar green caterpillars of T. variata and P. capreolaria roosted most frequently on the undersurface of fresh green spruce twigs (twigs with living needles). Brown caterpillars also roosted mostly on fresh twigs. P. secundarius preferred ; twig undersurface, while E. tantillaria roosted most often on the upper surface of twigs. Larvae of H. fasciaria did not prefer either the upper surface or undersurface of twigs. Comparing with the other studied species, they roosted more frequently on brown sprigs of fresh green twigs. We conclude that caterpillars could improve their mimicking of the particular parts of their host plant by the selection of their roosting position: larvae of T. variata and P. capreolaria imitate green needles, P. secundarius thin twigs, E. tantillaria dry needles captured among green needles on a living twig, and H. fasciaria thicker sprigs.

The aim of the paper was to determine influence of traffic density on heavy metal concentrations (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in two years needles of spruce Picea abies L. along the roads of various traffic density located in the Podhale region, Southern Poland. The samples of Picea abies L. were collected along two roads: heavily frequented main road no. 95 Kraków - Zakopane between Chabówka and Nowy Targ and a district road of low traffic density no. 1644 Łopuszna - Dursztyn, between villages Łopuszna and Nowa Biała. The samples were collected along five transects: three at the road no. 95 and two at the road no. 1644 at the following distances from the road: 5 m, 10 m, 50 m and 100 m. Generally, metal concentrations descended according to the increasing distances from the road. The highest concentrations were stated in case of Cu, Ni and Pb at the distance 5 meters from the road Chabówka - Nowy Targ (10,1 ± 1,3 µg Cu/g; 2,9 ± 0,2 µg Ni/g and 2,4 ± 0,6 µg Pb/g), and the lowest concentrations with exception of Cd were stated for both mentioned roads at the distance 100 meters. Traffic density influenced heavy metal concentrations in spruce Picea abies L. The differences in metal concentrations along two roads were presented by concentration coefficients, calculated as quotient of metal concentrations at the roads of various traffic density. The highest concentration coefficients at the distance of 5 m were stated for: Ni (2.6); Pb (2.4) and Cu (1.7) and the lowest for Cd (0.5), Cr (0.9) and Zn (0.8).

The investigation of zinc, cadmium, lead, copper and sulphur contents was carried out in the soil and in the needles of Picea abies L. Karst. in the Forest Promotional Complex "Lasy Beskidu Śląskiego". Samples of soil (from the level 0-10 cm) and annual, biennial and triennial needles of spruce were collected in autumn 2005 and 2006 from top parts of mountains: Rownica, Barania Góra and Czantoria. The highest heavy metals concentrations were determined in triennial needles of Picea abies collected from Czantoria and Barania Góra. The lowest content of sulphur and investigated metals was found in soil samples and heavy metals in plant material from the Rownica. Cadmium content (1.2 ug/g) was higher than normal level (0.2-0.8 ug/g) only triennial needles collected from Czantoria. The lead concentration (118-165 ug/g) in the soil of all investigated areas was exceed, lead level considered as allowable. Relatively low microelement concentrations in the soil and the needles of Picea abies L. Karst. indicated poor plant nutrition.

Prowadzono badania dotyczące zawartości metali ciężkich (Zn, Pb, Cu, Cd) w glebie i szpilkach Picea abies L. Karst. na terenie Leśnego Kompleksu Promocyjnego "Lasy Beskidu Śląskiego".

Due to the lack of comprehensive comparative research into the quality of spruce raw material from two ranges of spruce distribution in Poland an attempt to solve this issue was made. In connection with that aim of the research was set to be a comparative analysis of the quality of spruce raw material from centers and ranges of spruce distribution in Poland, and indication of characteristic features and the most important differences. Research covered two natural ranges of Norway spruce distribution in Poland - the south-western range and the north-eastern range. The following measurements works were carried out in the research areas: measurement of the diameter breast high of each tree of the thickness of 7 cm and more; measurements of the height of trees breast high of 7 cm; classification of raw material with the information on grade or quality-dimension group - of the first butt section of a trunk; registration of types and varieties of flaws; sampling from the bottom part of a trunk with the use of Pressler drill from 15 spruces selected by Draudt method from each research area. This research did not explicitly confirm the opinion of higher quality of spruce raw material from south-western range of distribution in comparison to wood from north-eastern range distribution.

Gas chrom atographic-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) analysis using an HP-INNO Wax capillary column (30 m x 0.25 mm x 0.5 ;μm film of polyethylene glycol) has been used for determination of individual monoterpenes in fresh coniferous needles ofPicea abies (L.) Karst. Concentration and composition pattern of monoterpenes were investigated with respect to the year of differentiation of needles (age of needles) and characteristics of shoots (length and total dry matter weight, DMW). Principal component analysis, analysis of variance, and cluster analysis allowed one to specify the content and composition pattern of essential oils and to find interrelations (also the latent ones) between year classes of needles.

Opracowano chromatograficzną metodę (chromatografia gazowa sprzężona z detektorem masowym, GC-MS), stosując kolumnę kapilarną HP-INNO Wax (30 m & 0,25 mm x x 0,5 jam film glikolu polietylenowego), do oznaczania pojedynczych monoterpenów w świeżych igłach świerku pospolitego, Picea abies (L.) Karst. Określano stężenie i skład monoterpenów w zależności od wieku igieł i charakterystyki parametrów wzrostu pędów (długość i całkowity ciężar suchej masy, DMW).

The research was conducted in the Beskid Śląski and Żywiecki area within the so-called Żywiecczyzna Region. The goals were the following: showing the influence of the bedrock, altitude and forest management type on the percentage of trees with internal rot, and examining any connections between tree injury and external rot. The research was conducted on 70 sample plots, on 1050 selected Norway spruces by taking samples with increment borer at the root neck. The type and percentage of the decay in the trunk diameter at the boring spot was established. External rot and trunk injury were also registered.
