The article discusses the typical problems of brick arches and vaults. Known calculation methods were compared. A method of estimating the load capacity based on the values of the internal forces was proposed. Possible and tested methods of reinforcement were presented.

The article presents a comparative numerical analysis of various ways to strengthen historical brick arches. Five ways of strengthening brick arches with steel tie-rods have been proposed. Two of these involve the use of braces wrapped around pillars supporting the arch connected with a tie-rod; the other two ways involve the use of the tie-rods with welded metal sheets of different sizes; the latter involves the use of a tie-rod glued with the use of an epoxy adhesive. The collected data were compared with the reference model of the arch left without any interference. The results make it possible to evaluate the effectiveness of the methods by comparing displacements in the vertical and horizontal direction and stresses. The article indicates the direction of proper planning and design of the arch strengthening in brick structures in historical buildings.

Przedstawiono problematyką związaną z oceną stanu technicznego zabytkowych konstrukcji w szczególności łuków ceglanych, w aspekcie poprawy ich wytrzymałości poprzez zastosowanie różnorodnych technik. W tym celu przedstawiono metodykę badań oraz symulacji komputerowych w celu oceny stanu wytężenia i nośności łuków ceglanych. Zaprezentowane różne warianty wzmocnień poprzez zastosowanie dodatkowych elementów. Przeprowadzono symulacje komputerowe MES deformacji łuków. Przedstawiono wyniki badań na obiektach rzeczywistych.

The study cover the issues of technical state estimation of monumental constructions, particularly brick arcs in the aspect of their strength improvement by the use of different techniques. In that purpose the research method and computer simulations were presented in order to estimate the strength and carrying capacity of brick arcs. Different variants of reinforcements by the usage of additional elements were presented. The FEM computer simulations of arcs deformation were conducted. The results of research on the real object were also presented.
