The paper deals with the problem of technical and social conditions of scientific discovery. Exemplified by the discovery of cosmic gamma radiation, the role of develop ment of technology in founding of new branches of astronomy (gamma- ray astronomy) is here presented. Some important social factors, which significantly accelerated the for mation of the gamma-ray astronomy, were also recognized in the paper. Above all, how ever, the concept of scientific discovery was supported in the paper - a concept of a scientific discovery as a multi-threaded, technical and social project which, due to its complexity and phasality, is not subject to reconstruction as a simple event to which we may assign authorship of a particular person or accurately determine the coordinates of the time. Modern science is, among others, characterized by the fact that any research projects taken up within its framework are highly complex and require cooperation of not only scholars from different research and scientific centers, but also engineers and technicians whose contribution to scientific discovery is comparable to the contribution of the scholars themselves.

The current paper deals with publications on the history of astronomy that appeared in "Kwartalnik Historii Nauki i Techniki" in the years 1956-2005. The overview of the subject-matter has been made chronologically within three thematic groups: (i) Copernican studies, (ii) Polonica, (iii) Varia. The paper summarizes the main points ofthe published texts. Each of the three thematic groups contains articles that have made an important contribution to the advances in the history of astronomy, but the most significant results were published in the field of Copemican studies. In recent years, the range of topics covered by articles on the history of astronomy in the quarterly has gone far beyond broadly understood Copemican studies, encompassing, for instance, such topics as ancient astronomy.

The article George Sarton’s understanding of the history of science, and, especially, his conception of new humanism. In this context Plato’s conceptions of cosmology, astronomy, and mathematics, in the interpretation of G. Sarton are critically analyzed. In the author’s opinion Sarton’s conception of the history of science is not located on the axis of the extemalism-intemalism debate, but rather it may be qualified as a kind of a weak version of presentism. Sarton’s biased interpretation of Plato’s Timaeus should be regarded as an effect of his acceptance of the (neo)positivistic concept of knowledge. What is more, the way in which Sarton contrasted Plato and Eudoxus seems to be a consequence of some version of a strategy of demarcationism which demands that history be considered as a field of battle of opposing forces.
