Although being not in accordance with the original concept proposed in the “Industrie 4.0”, the smart factory has been gradually applied to the practice. In contrast, we can observe that nearly all discourses, suggestions and discussions have been carried out without considering the convertibility of flexible manufacturing in FCIPS (Flexible Computer-Integrated Production Structure), which is the utmost leading facility within the industrial nation, to the CPS (Cyber Physical Systems) module in the smart factory. Admitting the powerful potentiality of the smart factory, at crucial issue is to discuss to what extent and how the technological and human resources so far accumulated in FCIPS are available for the smart factory. This paper proposes, first, the conceptual drawing of the smart factory on the basis of the concept of FCIPS, and then suggests the similarity of both the concepts. In fact, the smart factory consists of cloud computing, information communication network and CPS modules, whereas FCIPS consists of CIM, information communication network and a group of FMCs (Flexible Manufacturing Cells). Then, the paper describes the present and near future perspectives of the CPS module and FMC, especially placing the stress on machining, and asserts the convertibility of FMC for “One-off Production with Keen Machining Cost” to the CPS module. Finally, the paper summarizes the research and engineering development subjects in FCIPS and the smart factory necessary to be investigated hereafter together with detailing one leading subject, i.e. methodology to incorporate the human-intelligence into CIM.
Although observing a considerable number of new interesting behavior in dynamic states of machining, nearly all researches into the chatter vibration have been based on those conducted by Tobias, Tlusty and Merritt. In fact, we have established myriad remedies for the chatter suppression on the strength of their achievements; however, some crucial issues remain still in uncertainties, e.g., validity of penetration effects, definition duly what are the essential features of the chatter vibration. This position paper describes the facing problems of the chatter vibration in detail, aiming at the establishment of a generalized chatter loop. By this chatter loop, we may unveil synthetically the deterioration and improvement of the stability chart by all the influencing attributes, such as forced vibration and non-linearity within the machine-tool-work system.
This paper describes the results of a comparative research into the marketing and product strategies for the conventional MCs of China, India, Japan, Korea and Taiwan-makes. In this work, information from conventional MC manufacturers of these countries is collected on the spot and with the help of a questionnaire to identify the relevant strategies for differentiation. The parameters considered are the target customers, date of delivery, sale price, features of operability, design attributes, after sales service, motivation to purchase, target market segment. Based on these parameters, mind maps are drawn. The differences in the strategies among Japan, Korea and Taiwan manufacturers is that although most of the manufacturers in these countries have employed in-house design and assembly systems, and strongly rely on supply chain management, still the Korean manufacturers maintain the competitiveness through cheaper sales price and shorter delivery time, the Taiwanese manufacturers focus on current customers through cheap pricings but do not pay proper attention to business-oriented-enterprise management; while the Japanese manufacturers are capable of introducing directly opposite attributes in the product design. The Chinese and Indian manufacturers produce machines that are cost effective and focus on the inland market. The delivery time is long due to obsolete manufacturing facilities and sparse competition.
In localized globalization era, it appears that the modular design enables something new to be played, and thus at burning issue is the reconsideration of to what extent the modular design is applicable. To delve into a desirable modular design in not distant future, this paper describes first the present perspective including some facing problems and milestones in the developing history of the modular design. Then, the paper shows some applications of the modular design to other industrial spheres, ranging from automobile, through food processing plant, to submarine. On the strength of such awareness and also in consideration of characteristic features of the manufacturing environment in future, proposed is a new concept for modular design, in which primary concerns are two leading attributes, i.e., functionality-related, and also culture- and mindset-related attributes. These two should be duly converted into the quantified design specifications, and we must conduct the " One-to-One " conversion from functionality to structural configuration, and also conversion from the uncertain attribute to the quantified factor. Of note, the forerunning research is reviewed.

Purpose: By development of a robotics technique, the assisted living instruments which have intelligent functions are being developed. As a result, there is a possibility that the accident to which the assisted living instrument under actuation contacts a human body may occur. The purpose of this research is for the impact force measurement system which with load cells to build, and to evaluate performance. Design/methodology/approach: The impact force measurement system was built by load cells and a data logger. Evaluation of the performance of the system was carried out to static loads and dynamic loads. Findings: By covering the sensor part of load cells with shock absorbing material, it turned out that it is possible to measure impact load simple. Moreover, as a result of comparing the characteristic of shock absorbing material, it became clear that the impact-absorbing characteristic of cell sponge and organism soft tissue is in agreement. Research limitations/implications: This research estimated the impact-absorbing characteristic of organism soft tissue for the skin, fat, muscles, etc. as a complex. Practical implications: This paper cleared that the load which a bone receives by dynamic external force can be easily measured by load cells. Originality/value: The objective of this research project was to develop the system by which impact force is measured and evaluated based on the damage which a human body receives. And we were able to complete the prototype.

In a previous paper, the authors have proposed a hypothesis in relation to the composition of a technological system, i.e., a technological system consisting of core and regional available components. The hypothesis proposed is aimed at enabling technology transfer to be carried out more effectively in the future. This paper extends the proof of the validity of the hypothesis for some uncertain cases. The paper discusses the proof in two parts. First, it begins with a proposal of a quantitative method for the analysis and comparison of the culture-based entity of technology, which appears to be in closer relation to the regional available components, then, the paper applies the quantitative methodology proposed to a specific case study involving the operational planning technology being employed by machine tool manufacturers of three Asian countries. The results obtained show that indeed both the common and region-specific components can be observed even in the culture-based entity within a given technology. Specifically, the results in this paper complement those of the previous research. This suggests that the validity of the proposed hypothesis on a technological system is further verified.
