Zastosowanie metody zbiorów poziomicowych do segmentacji obrazów stomatologicznych poprzez wydzielenie poszczególnych obiektów oraz ich fragmentów jest głównym celem niniejszej publikacji. Ważne przy tym jest to, aby segmentacja reprezentowała zamierzony poziom szczegółowości. W algorytmie iteracyjnym wykorzystano metodę zbiorów poziomicowych zaproponowaną przez Sethiana i Oshera [1] oraz wprowadzono jej modyfikację wariacyjną [7].

The paper presents the application of the level set function to the tooth image segmentation. The idea of level sets, proposed by Osher and Sethian [1], is known to be a powerful and versatile tool for model evolution of interfaces. The variational formulation for geometric active contours forces the level set function to be close to a signed distance function, and therefore completely eliminates the need of the costly reinitialization procedure [7]. This formulation of the level set method consists of an internal energy term that penalizes the deviation of the level set function and an external energy term that drives the motion of the zero level set toward the desired image features. The proposed algorithm has been applied to real images with promising results.
