Matrix converter has several attractive features and some companies have shown a particular interest in its commercial exploitation. These paper gives an introduction to its technology and theory. After a brief historical review, the basic hardware solution for the development of matrix conveners are presented. An important part of the paper is dedicated to the discussion of the modulation and control strategies developed recently. Finally, some experimental results are given.

Przekształtniki matrycowe posiadają wiele atrakcyjnych cech, dzięki którym układy te coraz częściej znajdują zastosowanie w aplikacjach komercyjnych. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi wprowadzenie do przekształtników matrycowych. Krótki rys historyczny poprzedza opis podstawowej struktury przekształtnika. Istotnym elementem artykułu jest przegląd najnowszych metod modulacji i sterowania przekształtnikiem. Jako ilustracja prezentowanych problemów zamieszczone zostały wyniki badań eksperymentalnych.

Assessment of direct torque control for induction motor drives

Among all control methods for induction motor drives, Direct Torque Control (DTC) seems to be particularly interesting being independent of machine rotor parameters and requiring no speed or position sensors. The DTC scheme is characterized by the absence of PI regulators, coordinate transformations, current regulators and PWM signals generators. In spite of its simplicity, DTC allows a good torque control in steady state and transient operating conditions to be obtained. However, the presence of hysteresis controllers for flux and torque could determine torque and current ripple and variable switching frequency operation for the voltage source inverter. This paper is aimed to analyze DTC principles, the strategies and the problems related to its implementation and the possible improvements.
