W 1959 r. opublikowane zostały dwie prace, które opisywały otrzymywanie wodorku niklu metodą elektrochemiczna. W niniejszym artykule przedstawię droge do tego odkrycia, badania fizykochemiczne i dalsze konsekwencje dla rozwoju techniki wysokociśnieniowej gazowego wodoru, otrzymanie nowych wodorków metali przejściowych i nowych wynikow w znanych dotychczas wodorkach metalicznych. Zadaniem tego przeglądu nie jest bynajmniej przedstawienie pełnej literatury zagadnienia, a jedynie pewnych wątków w celu naświetlenia rozwoju problematyki naukowej i aparaturowej.

40 years ago the first two papers were describing the electrochemical preparation of solid nickel hydride. The sequence of events is presented, which led to this discovery, starting from a diffusion anomaly, caused by a non-uniform distribution of hydrogen in nickel cathodes. The late discovery of nickel hydride, as compared to palladium hydride discovered in 1866, is due to two reasons: a). the limited penetration depth of nickel hydride, b). the high activity of gaseous hydrogen, necessary for a direct synthesis from the elements. This required the construction of a new high pressure equipment, necessary for high pressures of gaseous hydrogen of the order 10(4) bar at room temperature. These devices enabled not only the measurements of isotherms of formation and destruction of nickel hydride, but also its kinetics under near equilibrium conditions. The thermodynamics of nickel hydride is characterized, and the magnetic and electronic properties are mentioned. The new high pressure technique was the ladder for the discovery of superconductivity in palladium hydride, as well as the way for preparation of new hydrides. Some review articles are mentioned.
