Asbestos is a serious health hazardous substance and its removal is a priority for pollution prevention. The destruction of the tubular structure of asbestos can be achieved by means of thermal treatment. In order to characterize the changes accompanying thermal treatment, both natural chrysotile asbestos and calcined asbestos were subjected to the thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis, X–ray diffraction phase analysis and examination by scanning electron microscopy. The results of laboratory investigations of using calcinated chrysotile asbestos to production of sintered ceramics (stoneware) are presented.

Azbest, zarówno naturalny chrysotylowy jaki i kalcynowany, poddano termograwimetrycznej i różnicowej analizie termicznej, rentgenowskiej analizie fazowej i oględzinom z użyciem skaningowego mikroskopu elektronowego, aby scharakteryzować zmiany towarzyszące obróbce cieplnej. Przedstawiono wyniki badań laboratoryjnych nad wykorzystaniem azbestu chryzotylowego do wytwarzania ceramiki spiekanej (wyroby kamionkowe).

Artykuł przedstawia możliwości neutralizacji azbestu chryzotylowego przez prażenie go w niskiej temperaturze i mielenie. Uzyskany w ten sposób materiał stanowił zasadniczo substytut piasku kwarcowego spełniającego rolę dodatku schudzającego w masach ceramicznych przeznaczonych do otrzymywania ceramiki o spieczonym czerepie. Parametry kształtek prasowanych z dodatkiem wody i następnie spiekanych porównano z kształtkami z udziałem NaH2PO4. Badania w skali laboratoryjnej wykazały, że prażony azbest chryzotylowy może być wykorzystywany jako jeden z surowców do otrzymywania ceramiki o spieczonym czerepie.

The paper reports the possibility of detoxification of asbestos through low temperature heating and grinding treatment. It has been found that chrysotile can be transformed to a mixture of non hazardous silicate phases as a result of thermal treatment at the temperatures higher than 600°C. Calcinated chrysotile asbestos is easily milled to the pulverulent shape material by mechanical milling. The material prepared in such a way acted as a substitute of quartz sand, which is widely used as a leaning agent in ceramic masses to be formed into stoneware. The parameters of the samples pressed with water and then sintered were collated with the samples with the addition of NaH2PO4. The laboratory scale investigations showed that the calcinated chrysotile asbestos can be used as one of raw materials for the sintered ceramics.
