W pracy przedstawiono działalność Stanisława Szczepanowskiego, jednego z pionierów przemysłu naftowego w Polsce, na tle sytuacji społeczno-gospodarczej w Galicji w końcu XVIII wieku. Omówiono zwłaszcza stan przemysłu, rozwój infrastruktury komunikacyjnej oraz szkolnictwo i politykę podatkową w Galicji. Na tym tle opisano życiorys zawodowy i dokonania Stanisława Szczepanowskiego jako niewątpliwie jednej z najbardziej, obok Ignacego Łukasiewicza, zasłużonych postaci w rozwoju przemysłu naftowego w Polsce.

The activity of Stanisław Szczepanowski, one of the pioneers of Polish oil industry is presented on the background of social and economic situation of the Galicia region by the end of the 18th century. The authors concentrate on the following issues state of industry, development of infrastructure and education and tax policy in the Galicia region. On this background, the professional life and achievements of Stanisław Szczepanowski - one of the most prominent persons involved in the development of oil industry in Poland next to Ignacy Łukasiewicz - is described in the paper.

Artykuł przedstawia rozwiązania techniczne obejmujące: wzmocnienie korpusu wałów poprzez dogęszczenie odcinków nasypów będących w stanie luźnym metodą wgłębnego zagęszczania gruntu za pomocą kolumn piaskowych; odbudowę korpusu wałów do gabarytów określonych w projekcie; uszczelnienie wału za pomocą ścianki szczelnej z paneli PVC usytuowanej u podstawy wału oraz folii hydroizolacyjnej PVC ułożonej na skarpie.

The paper presents the technical solutions comprising: reinforcement of the body of the bank by compacting its sections being in the loose state using the method of compacting the soil by means of sand columns, reconstruction of the body of the banks according to dimensions determined in the project documentation, sealing of the bank by means of a sheet pile wall made of PCV panels and situated at the base of the bank and the PCV watertight foil placed on the slope.

New threats to air pollution control

In the past few years, power generation sources mainly contributing to air pollution have been replaced by other, previously less important sources - transport, wood and coal open fire, and municipal waste combustion. The continuing town development, as well as the concomitant rise in the number of cars and fossil fuel or heating oil burning households, has become a dominant contributing source of total air pollution, especially over large urban agglomerations. Nowadays, emissions of gaseous pollutants from spark-ignition engines have been reduced markedly, owing to the wide spread use of three-way catalysts. A remedy has also been found for diesel engines. Technologies enabling manufacture of durable high-performance diesel particulate filters with self-regenerating are available and briefly presented. Little has been done so far to reduce emission from fuel burning in households. The reason is that the durability of the available catalysts appears to be insufficient. Nobel metals (Pt, Rh, Pd) which are successfully applied to the afterburning of exhaust gases from vehicles are useless. Some promising techniques such as catalytically aided heater, a heater providing complete combustion and catalytic heat generator with catalyst in the fluidized bed are discussed.
