Architectural interior design for durability of interior components. Material and intangible contexts of selected durability-supportive design schemes

The problem of durability is mostly situated in theoretical and practical dimensions within the discipline of architecture in the context of environmental sustainability. Technical durability covers the subject of forming new buildings through embodied energy in building technologies, building materials, and products. The second identified durability framework, defined as emotional durability, concerns the enhancement of the relationship between consumers and products. The paper discusses the interior architectural design for the durability of interior components. The article identifies the supportive design methods to shape interior components while enhancing their durability placed within the two frameworks mentioned above, and analysed in material and intangible aspects, both reflecting the necessity for inclusion of the postulates of environmental sustainability. The research paper recognizes the interior architectural design for adaptive reuse and responsivenessoriented scheme of biophilic design as supportive schemes for the interior architectural design given the durability of interior components within the material, as well as intangible aspects. The results of the study reveal that the intangibility-related factors dominate in the analysis of responsiveness and adaptive reuse as design schemes to support the durability of constitutive interior components. In particular, the user’s emotional engagement, gained through the experience of natural building materials or secondary products introduced into the component’s structure, is noticeable in both models. The cultural connotations are among the intangible factors common for the discussed models as well. The quotations from the past engage the users and enclosed within the component’s volume, complement and enrich further satisfactory use of components, thus influencing the longevity of spatial objects featuring the inner spaces.

Koncepcja biofilii oparta na identyfikacji naturalnej skłonności jednostki do utożsamiania się z systemami i procesami zachodzącymi w naturalnym środowisku oraz model projektowania biofilnego wprowadzający do metodyki projektowej środowiska zbudowanego założenia biofilii, są poddawane krytycznej analizie od lat 90. XX w. Artykuł sytuuje badania nad implementacją koncepcji biofilii w obszarze architektury wnętrz. Analizowane w tekście wybrane metody i techniki projektowe w kształtowaniu komponentów środowiska wewnętrznego uwzględniają wzorce i atrybuty biofilnego projektowania jako istotne determinanty projektowe, które wpływają pośrednio na realizację postulatu zrównoważenia środowiskowego w aspekcie zapewnienia zdrowia biologicznego oraz dobrostanu użytkownikom wynikającego z komfortu psychofizycznego. Głównym celem artykułu jest rewizja metodyki projektowej poprzez wykazanie, że konsekwentne uzupełnienie modelu projektowego o elementy koncepcji biofilii w istotny sposób poszerza zakres pojęciowy zrównoważenia środowiskowego i stymuluje innowacyjne rozwiązania przestrzeni wewnętrznych i jej komponentów konstytutywnych.

Biophilia hypothesis based on the inherent human affinity to affiliate with the natural systems and biophilic design that introduces its consideration into the design methodology of the built environment, has been critically analyzed since the 90. XX. This paper refers to the biophilia concept in the context of the interior architectural design. The analyzed design methods and techniques in shaping of the interior environment’s components recognize the patterns and attributes of the biophilic design. Their application into the design methodology, as essential design determinants, indirectly impacts the fulfillment of the sustainability postulates. These consider the optimization of indoor quality parameters, including the user’s satisfaction on the emotional, aesthetical and cognitive levels. This paper attempts to revise the interior architectural design methodology and to prove that consequent enclosure of the elements of biophilia concept is to extend the scope of the notion of environmental sustainability, as well as to stimulate the innovative solutions for architectural interiors and their components.
