Traffic engineering for communication networks is getting increasingly important as a consequence of the fast growth of service-integrated networks. We can also observe an increasing complexity of the network load as it is generated by recent distributed applications and their users (e.g. WWW, multimedia applications), which tend to demand transfer of discrete and continuous media streams in parallel. This survey paper contains a proposal for a generalized proceeding in load modeling covering, e.g. data, voice and video traffic. The method of modeling is directly based on measurements and allows description of load at different interfaces within a communication system. The proceeding is applied to model MPEG encoded video traffic by way of example. Moreover, we introduce and successfully validate a new concept of load transformation, which allows one to characterize in detail complex secondary loads as they are included in communication systems as a consequence of handling some given primary load.
