In the field of geological education conducted by the Polish Geological Institute (PGI), the Geological Museum has traditionally played the main role. Geological collections have been gathered already since the establishment of the PGI in 1919, and over time, the exhibition and educational activities, popularizing geological knowledge in society, have been continued. Currently, an increasing number of PGI employees, also from outside the Museum, are involved in the education conducted by PGI, which allows the Institute to go "outside the Museum Exhibition Hall” directly into society. This is marked, among others, by the participation in an increasing number of mass outdoor events, as well as by the increasing activity in the protection of geological heritage in Poland. In the future, special emphasis must be paid on education about the necessity and inevitability and, finally, the acceptance of exploitation of raw materials, because we, as a society and individual entities, use things created from the processing of mineral resources every day.

The pits that left after exploitation of solid rock minerals are extremely interesting geological objects. They contain records of ancient processes that led to the exposure of rock formations, allowing the timing of these processes. The data obtained from abandoned quarries can be used for scientific studies, but it can also be applied in all activities aimed at popularizing knowledge about a biotic nature. Therefore, these localities should be under legal protection or at least secured against devastation, which often faces considerable difficulties. The Geological Museum has undertaken actions aiming at the protection of abandoned quarries, most often in the form of projects dedicated to geotourism management and creating geotourist trails. These projects are a chance to save important geosites from devastation, overgrowing by vegetation, or fading into oblivion. The article presents case studies of successfully managed old quarries, as well as failed attempts.

Tradycje przemysłu wapienniczego sięgają odległych czasów. Wapno, jako spoiwo zapraw budowlanych i farb używane jest już od kilku tysiącleci. Stare piece wapienne i towarzyszące im wyrobiska spotykane na Wyżynie Krakowsko-Częstochowskiej (a zwłaszcza w jej północnej części) doskonale nadają się do zagospodarowania i wykorzystania w przyszłości jako miejsca edukacyjne ułatwiające poznanie i zrozumienie wielu procesów kształtujących powierzchnię Ziemi, w tym poprzez gospodarczo-przemysłową działalność człowieka. Znane są już ciekawe, krajowe przykłady dostosowania obiektów przemysłu wapienniczego do realizacji funkcji rekreacyjno-poznawczych. Najwięcej jest ich w Sudetach. Autorzy referatu mają nadzieję, że w nieodległej przyszłości dołączy do nich przynajmniej jeden z jurajskich wapienników z okolicy Olsztyna, Rudnik, Częstochowy, Złotego Potoku, Mstowa, Kusiąt lub Choronia.

The traditions of the lime industry date back to distant times. Lime has been used as a binder of building mortars and paints for several millennia. Old lime kilns and the accompanying excavations found in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland (especially in its northern part) are perfect for development and future use as educational places facilitating the knowledge and understanding of many processes shaping the Earth's surface, including economic and industrial activities of humans. Interesting local examples of adapting lime industry facilities aimed at enhancing recreation and cognitive functions are well recognized. Most of them are in the Sudetes. The authors of the paper hope that in the near future one of the Jurassic lime kilns in the vicinity of Olsztyn, Rudnik, Częstochowa, Złoty Potok, Mstów, Kusiąt or Choroń will also soon become recognizable.
