The paper deals with a possible energy saving on milking machines by changing the method of vacuum regulation and by controlling the run of the vacuum pump electric motor by a frequency converter. The work was focused on defining working parameters of a newly designed device and on measuring energy consumption. The device works on the principle of a pressure-reducing valve, the vacuum pump vacuum being higher than the milking machine working vacuum. First of all it was necessary to find the minimum difference between both vacuums. Based on the measurements implemented the minimum value of the differences, i.e 4 kPa, was suggested at which energy consumption on a model device was measured. The values obtained by using the suggested regulating device and frequency converter were compared with the values obtained by using a standard control valve and without frequency converter. A 23% energy saving was lower than expected being evidently caused by the vacuum pump of a low efficiency as in this case also small losses markedly affect the re-sults. In spite of it experiments made confirmed a possible energy saving by using a frequency converter for driving vacuum pump elec-tric motor of a milking machine.
