The results of the research concerning measures of strontium isotopes and concentrations, were presented in this article. This environmental tracers occuring in groundwater and surface water allowed for the preliminary identification of groundwater circulation in the multi-layered aquifer system. The study area concerned Żarnowiecka Upland and Valley of the Żarnowieckie Lake with the Piaoenica river, where the occurrence of 3 to 5 aquifers in Quaternary, Miocene and Oligocene was confirmed. The valley area is also the Main Groundwater Reservoir (MGR) No. 109. The results clearly indicated on substantial differences in the values of 87Sr/86Sr isotopic signatures and strontium concentrations in each of aquifers. These differences made possible to determine the percentage of the groundwater in the Piaoenica drained from the upland and from the valley. Calculations showed the groundwater component from the upland may constitute up to 80% of river water, and the river is a regional drainage base even for the Oligocene aquifer occurring at a depth of approx. 200 m. The results confirmed no link between the shallowest aquifers occurring in the upland, and the drainage role of the Piaśnica river. The characteristic of shallow groundwater is similar to the rainwater.

Living corals are remarkably broad in their thermal and bathymetric ranges. But corals that could tolerate abnormally high temperatures (higher than 40 C) are unknown both in the living communities and in the fossil record. Here we report the discovery of small thermophilic rugose corals in the Devonian vent community of southeastern Morocco. These organisms were adapted to conditions prevailing within chimney conduits of a hydrothermal system that developed on the roof of a submarine volcanic high. The coral larvae followed a calice-in-calice settlement and growth strategy to survive the contact with thermal fluids. This adaptation was not related to taxonomy and characteristic of all coral taxa present in the vents. Monospecific coral population was identified in several Emsian vents whereas the coral fauna of the single Givetian vent was more diverse and included four species. The entry of different rugose coral species into the hot vents resulted from a trophic relation to ostracods flourishing in the chimneys.

The mountains N of Kerman in southeastern Iran are a key region for Devonian/Lower Carboniferous stratigraphy of a still poorly known segment on the northern margin of Gondwana and display a great diversity of neritic depositional environments. The hitherto applied subdivision into lithostratigraphic formations has been calibrated by means of conodonts and brachiopods allowing good correlations of 36 sections, the majority of them ranging from the top of the Cambrian or the Silurian into the Lower Permian. Upper Cambrian sandstones or Silurian carbonates are unconformably overlain by red siliciclastics of uncertain Early to early Middle Devonian age (Padeha Formation) which in turn pass into skeletal limestones (upper Middle Devonian to Tournaisian Bahram and Sardar Formations). The latter are erosionally capped by Permian platform carbonates (Jamal Formation). Facies patterns during 5 intervals from the Silurian into the Tournaisian show evolution from a carbonate platform and siliciclastic shelf during the Silurian and the Early Devonian into shallow open marine embayments during the late Middle and Late Devonian, and a carbonate platform during the Early Carboniferous. Sharp boundaries between Upper Devonian facies belts appear controlled by synsedimentary epeirogenic movements which may have been active since the Early Palaeozoic.
