Over the period of almost one hundred and seventy years of its existence, the railway system in the present Polish lands has passed through various phases, framed by the landmarks of the contemporary history of Poland and Europe, i.e. the years: 1918, 1939 and 1945. The latest political turn-point of similar scale which took place in the country in 1989, although not linked to any changes of state borders, had also made a great influence on the shape of railway transport system in Poland because of the deepness of the launched civilization changes. Transformation of this form of communication in the researched period, however, unlikely to the changes of the Polish economy as the whole, had taken an indisputably negative character. Over the recent twenty years, the Polish railway system has become one of the so called „problematic” branches of the national economy. The scale of its decline, expressed by dramatic decrease of the length of railway network and traffic intensity, together with deterioration of infrastructure and rolling stock, allow us also to count the railway transport among the worst branches from the point of view of its adaptation to the changing economic environment. It is hard to define the mainspring of such conjuncture, but the researchers dealing with this problem most often point here at lack of consistent state’s policy, supporting the development of railway transport. The hereby work focuses on comparing the accessibility of Krakow from four towns of its metropolitan region by means of railway transport. It also discussed the recent changes in organization of passenger railway conveyances, negatively assessing cases of closing down railway lines but appreciating new investments executed by regional authorities. Comparison of the surveyed towns was done from two positions: values calculated from theoretical model of gravitation were opposed to results of analysis of actual railway traffic. Prevailing influence of distance from trunk railway lines on ranking positions of the towns was shown. Other issues discussed in this work comprise the position of Krakow as a domestic and international railway junction as well as the growing role played by road transport in Krakow agglomeration.

The railway line mentioned in the title (The Coal Trunk Railroad), built in the years 1928-1933, was the biggest railway investment in the pre-war Poland. For financial and functional reasons, it was projected and constructed as the shortest connection between the seaport of Gdynia and the hinterland coal-mining centre of Upper Silesia, ignoring the existing settlement structure of the country. The article discusses the question of the influence of this railroad on the local and national economical space and transportation system, as well as the differences between the present functions of its northern and southern part. The history of the railroad and natural conditions determining its localisation were also presented.
