Fifteen core samples from four boreholes in southern Poland were analysed for maturation of organic matter. The analyses were conducted on Jurassic species of dinoflagellate cysts. These palynomorphs were examined under a microscope in white and ultraviolet light. Four to six photographs of cysts were then taken from each depth interval. Their colour and fluorescence were assigned to TAI (Thermal Alteration Index), and then transferred to vitrinite reflectance (Ro%). In addition, digital RGB colour measurements were carried out to confirm and systematize the Ro% values obtained. Vitrinite reflectance measurements on the polished surfaces of the rock samples were another method used in this study. This provided more accurate results on thermal maturity of organic matter. All three methods were later assessed and compared in terms of their accuracy and effectiveness. There was aclear trend of progressive changes in maturity with depth in each sample. Moreover, a positive correlation between the methods applied provides a perspective on the use of microscopic and RGB analyses.
