The Żelazny Most reservoir for disposal of copper ore post-flotation tailings is situated in southwest part of Poland between Lubin and Głogów. It is now the largest tailings disposal reservoir in Europe and one of the largest in the world, with surface of 1410 ha. The maximum height of the tailing dam reached 50 m and 350 mln m3 tailings have been deposited up to now. Progressive design is being performed by Hydroprojekt since 1974, however operation and supervision started in 1977. The object is being managed by KGHM Polska Miedź SA. In this paper, at the beginning, the basic parameters of the tailings pond and deposits have been presented, and following issues of technical solutions described: - hydrotransport and the method of tailings depositing in the tailings pond, having fundamental meaning for safety of the structure and environmental protection, - the method of heightening of the dams and next phases of reservoir's extension, - other specific technical solutions of safe extension of reservoir.
