Content available remote Small water ponds as reservoirs of algae biodiversity

The areas of northern Poland are typical examples of recently formed post-glacial landscapes with a very large number of small ponds. Phycology of these ponds has been seldom studied, especially when compared to data collected from lager post-glacial lakes. The aim of our study was to determine the importance of small ponds to the biodiversity of algae. In 1996-2002 and 2012-13, we carried out phycological studies in 20 small ponds located in fields and forests. During the study period, we recorded the presence of 503 taxa of algae. The flora of algae was unique in each pond. Another important and frequent observation was the total and rapid “rebuilding” of algal flora. Statistical analyses revealed some other important facts, including the importance of small ponds to algal biodiversity. The average number of taxa recorded during the studies of individual water reservoirs was 56, thus much less than usually recorded in typical large lakes. But when we take the large number of small ponds into consideration, it appears that they represent more than 97% of the populations of algae and for this reason they are important to the biodiversity of algae.

The Koronowo Reservoir (16.6 km2) is located in the lower reaches of the Brda River, in the Kujawy-Pomerania Province, 20 km from Bydgoszcz near the town of Koronowo, hence the name of the reservoir. The reservoir was built in the 1960s and started from damming the waters of the Brda River by a ca. 20 m high earth dam in the village of Pieczyska. This reservoir is used mainly for water retention and production of electric energy in the hydroelectric power station; in addition, it plays a significant recreational function. In terms of the latter function, the spread of cyanobacteria is a serious problem. The aim of the study was to assess longterm changes in the structure of cyanobacteria in waters of the Koronowo Reservoir. The results from 1996, 2008, 2011 and 2013 were compared. As evidenced by the analysis of the phytoplankton composition in the Koronowo Reservoir in terms of functional groups, especially the occurrence of dominant and subdominant species from the groups P, H1, S1, LM, J, G and W2, the waters of the reservoir can be classified as eutrophic, potentially evolving towards the hypertrophic conditions. The HPLC analysis of cyanobacterial toxins revealed the presence of microcystins at two sites of the water body. The species structure, the distribution and the dominance of specific species of cyanobacteria is recurrent over the 17 years; the following species form algal blooms: Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (L.) Ralfs et Bornet et Flahault and Microcystis aeruginosa (Kütz.) Kützing.

Content available remote Dynamics of the phytoplankton community in mesotrophic Lake Borówno

The phytoplankton in Lake Borówno has never been included in phycological studies. The objective of our research was qualitative and quantitative analysis with reference to physicochemical parameters. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of phytoplankton assemblages were performed in 2004 and 2009. A total of 117 taxa were identified in Lake Borówno: Cyanoprocaryota — 35, Cryptophyta — 2, Euglenophyta — 1, Pyrophyta — 3, Chrysophyceae — 4, Bacillariophyceae — 25, Chlorophyta — 47. The bottom of the shallow water was covered with meadows of Charophyceae, with the dominant species Chara vulgaris L. Biomass of the phytoplankton varied from 1.23 mg dm-3 in April to 5.74 mg dm-3 in August 2009. Ceratium hirundinella (O.F.Müller) Bergh was the dominant taxon during the whole season, but during summer another co-dominant taxon, Microcystis aeruginosa (Kütz.)Kütz., occurred. The quality parameters, phytoplankton biomass, chlorophyll-a concentration and TSI indicate the mesotrophic character of the lake. The blue-green algae blooms, which are the major problem for preserving the good conditions of water in lakes, were not observed either in 2004 or 2009.

Podkreślono znaczenie certyfikatów posiadanych przez podmioty gospodarcze na wyroby, poświadczające zgodność przez akredytowaną jednostkę oceniającą zgodność, tam gdzie odpowiednie wspólnotowe prawodawstwo harmonizacyjne nie wymaga takich certyfikatów. Organy nadzoru rynku powinny należycie je uwzględnić podczas przeprowadzania kontroli cech produktu. W publikacji przedstawiono również nowe wymagania obowiązujące jednostki certyfikujące wyroby.

European Parliament established new requirements for accreditation and market supervision, concerning to the condition of new product introducing to the market. It was taken the rule that the member countries shouldn't poses more than one country accredited body. It was emphasized the meaning of certificates, own by companies on products, certifying the conformity by accredited unit, where the community legislation needn't such certificates. The market supervision bodies should consider its in proper manner during control currying out. In article the new demands for certification units were presented.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki wstępnych badań nad glonami aerofitycznymi porastającymi elewacje budynków wielkopłytowych, średniowysokich, zlokalizowanych w Bydgoszczy' Badania laboratoryjne próbek pobranych z elewacji wykazały obecność glonów i zielenic nitkowatych. Zwiększone występowanie tych form na elewacjach termoizolowanych metodą BSO z użyciem styropianu wynika z powstania warunków siedliskowych sprzyjającego ich rozwojowi.

The paper reports on preliminary results over aerophyt algae sprouting multi plate, middle high buildings in Bydgoszcz. Laboratory researches of samples front facades present algae and filiform green algae. Occurring increasing on heat-insulated with foamed polystyrene BSO method facades results from site conditions good for development.

On the basis of preliminary phycological analysis 122 taxa of algae were identified in seven selected natural field and midforest water bodies on the southern border of Świecie Height. Green algae Chlorophyta belonging to the genus Volvox which caused blooms in some field ponds and Euglenophyta belonging to the genus Trachelomonas causing blooms in one of the midforest reservoirs studied were the prevailing groups. Owing to both algal and phytosociological analysis of vascular flora in the context of physicochemical conditions, it was possible to determine the structure of phycoflora differentiation and the trophy of the surveyed astatic reservoirs in relation to water level fluctuations in permanent and periodic water bodies.
