The effect of mould fungi on compression strength along the grain of Scots pine sapwood (Pinus sylvestris L.) The sapwood of Scots pine wood may be very easy attacked by rot and mould fungi at high humid conditions. It belongs to class 1 – not durable species from the point of view of resistance to fungi. The filamentous fungi caused it moulding, discoloration and disfigurement. The spores and mycotoxins emitted by fungi are not environment friendly and may be also reason of allergies and disease. The trade quality class of wood may be lowered because of its disfigurement and covering by mould fungi. Some of the filamentous fungi belonging to Ascomycetes, Deuteromycetes group, causes blue stain of wood, may however not only discolor the wood, but decrease it mechanical properties as well. The aim of the research was to determine the influence of fungi causing Scots pine sapwood moulding on it compression strength along the grain. The wood was exposed on attack of mixture of pure cultures and single cultures of mould fungi by 4 weeks. It was completely covered by fungi during the period. Such wood may not be considered as resistant to mould fungi in terms of requirements of building evaluation of materials. The compression strength of the wood attacked by fungi decreased only by 6-10% in comparison to control wood, however the changes were statistically significant.
