Despite the rapid and continuous progress in the construction of vehicles and accompanying improving road infrastructure, the road safety issue remains very serious. Especially, it concerns intersections and road junctions where nearly 30% of road accidents take place. The paper is focused on a new intelligent path displaying suport system to be installed on intersections of complex geometry combined with multiphase traffic lights. It consists of optical projection of two different horizontal signs, i.e. strips designating lanes for the green-light directions and perpendicular blocking lines for the red-light directions.

Artykuł dotyczy nowatorskiej metody poprawy bezpieczeństwa na skrzyżowaniach o złożonym układzie geometrycznym. Polega ona na zastosowaniu systemu SPIK-er, który jest instalowany wraz z wielofazową sygnalizacją świetlną na skrzyżowaniach i stanowi jej uzupełnienie. System SPIK-er umożliwia wyświetlanie dwóch rodzajów znaków poziomych, tj. wyznaczających kształt i kierunek pasów ruchu przy świetle zielonym oraz linii poprzecznych przy świetle czerwonym. Idea systemu SPIK-er sprowadza się do wsparcia kierowców w warunkach złej widoczności tradycyjnego oznakowania poziomego na jezdni lub jej braku.

The paper is focused on an innovative method designed to improve safety at intersections with complex geometry. The method consists in applying the SPIK-er system, which is to be installed as an integrated element of multiphase traffic lights. The system displays two types of horizontal traffic signs. The first of them indicates the shape and direction of lanes at the green light, the second perpendicular bars at the red light. The intention of the SPIK-er system consists in providing support for motorists in poor or lack of visibility of the traditional horizontal marking painted on the road surface.
