The actual economic development trends are determined by increasing globalisation of markets and customer requirements as well as by increased use of advanced information and communication technology which lead to an increased competitive intensity. In this context logistics services bečíme an essential success factor. This paper provides an overview of the transportation function and its importance to logistics. We will examine alternative transportation modes and intermodal combinations. We also describe key transportation management issues of shippers and carriers, transportation cost and performance measurement, and the role of computers. Efficient transportation systems are the hallmark of industrialized societies. The transportation sector of most industrialized economies is so pervasive that we of ten fail to comprehend the magnitude of its impact on our way of life. In 2006, EU transportation expenditures were approximately €200 billion of the nation's total logistics costs, which were estimated to be €487 billion. Since 1970, the transportation sector has grown considerably.

Concept of economic efficiency in the logistics systems is possible distinquish on the social, partnership, competitive and internal efficiency. The functional and structural efficiency is appropriate to distinquish by the analysis and designing logsitics systems. The practically analysis efficiency of the logistics process can be done by using of some partial efficiency sucha s: disposable resource efficiency, costs efficiency, performance efficiency, economic efficiency and benefit efficiency.
